Very Good
Third Wave IPAThird Wave IPA
Notes: Christian Moerlein established his brewery in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine Brewery District in 1853. Next, in 1981 Hudepohl Brewing Company introduced Christian Moerlein as one of the pioneer craft beers of today's craft beer movement. Today we bring you Third Wave IPA. An aggressively hopped India Pale Ale bursting with floral Pale Ale bursting with floral aromas and hints of citrus flavor. Brewed with legacy for the future of our craft.

A: The beer is relatively clear amber in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high off white head that took a long time to settle down, gradually receding into a thin layer of bubbles coating both the surface and the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of floral and citrusy hops are present in the nose along with some hints of caramel malts.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste starts off with flavors of citrusy hops and has some notes of floral hops and hints of piney hops towards the finish. There is a moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer won't blow you away, but it is a solid IPA with nice aromas and flavors, and some crispness and bitterness.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 12/1/2017. Pours slightly hazy medium orange/amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice thick foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/earthy/pine hops and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, caramel, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy/pine hops and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/sticky, and lightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 6.2%. Overall this is a delicious IPA. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy/pine hops and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish, not overly aggressive. Definitely Chinook, and probably Columbus as well. Very juicy, vibrant, dank, and earthy hop complexity; nice bready malt backbone, with minimal residual sweetness from lingering dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and really well made classic style Midwest IPA.

I tried this at the Moerlein basement taproom. It poured a clear amber with white head that is leaving some lace. The scent had floral herb and hop notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with sweet malt mixed with pine resin hop and slight bitterness finish. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its was a decent beer.

Poured from a can into a Goose Island tulip. The beer pours out pretty clear with a gorgeous dark gold color and 2 fingers of fluffy white head with average retention. On the nose I get mild notes of pine trees and lemons along with some grapefruit and lavender.

Light body with a firm feel and a sharp, hoppy flavor. Very light malt presence despite the firm, creamy feel. Hops predominate. Strong earthy hemp-like flavors play against fresh lemon rind, white pepper, and elderflower. Dry finish with a lingering, mossy flavor.

Moerlein has been producing some really good IPAs lately. First there was Bay of Bengal, then Big Piney, and now this. I expected to like Third Wave most of all, but it has a very botanic, husky bitterness, not the fruity bitterness I tend to gravitate towards. I think I like their Big Piney much better.

Tannish golden color with a slight head and looks pretty thin. Piney citrus scent. Similar to the scent but not much taste. Medium light body and carbonation. Not a fan.

Pours crystal copper color with cap of light beige foam. Complex herbal-pine, floral, and citrus notes. Flavor of firm dry bitter resin hops with and malty wheat backbone that has a touch of malty caramel, and sprinkle of herbal spice to balance floral hops.

Wow. Am I really the first person to rate this newly canned local IPA? This is a very nice, albeit pretty standard, IPA. Really love to support this Cincy brewer with a great brewing history. Thumbs up.
