Style: American Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 14.50%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Cafe Del Bastardo is the culmination of our friendship with Tamp Coffee Co. and our love for barrel-aged Imperial Stout. An infusion of whole coffee beans into our Kentucky Bastard barrels brings a new member to our Bastard family. This intensely aromatic beer displays bright coffee, bourbon, vanilla and malty-chocolate-coffee notes followed by warming alcohol.

A: Pours pitch black with a creamy-looking mocha colored head. The volume is pretty low which is on the normal side of things considering the aging. Medium to low lacing but the beer has a ton of alcohol legs.

S: The coffee is front and center on this one along with dark notes of cocoa powder, raisins, dates, leather, oak tannins and vanilla.

T: Once again, the coffee is dead center with super strong notes of quality micro-roaster coffee like slightly tart cherries. You also get the raisins, dates, cocoa powder, leather, straight oak and vanilla. The leather is a tiny bit odd in this mix but it isn't too bad as I only deduct 0.25 from it. This will be a polarizing tasting beer I suppose as some might not be used to the acidity present in the more in vogue coffees.

M: Medium to heavy. I would have preferred a super heavy feel for this beer but it's alright. Also, I think the carbonation is a bit too lively for the genre and the notes in the beer.

O: At the end of the day, this is a really solid beer. It's surprisingly easy to find in Canada and should be an instant buy if you didn't taste it before.

My bottle labeled the 2018 release says 12% ABV (but at that weight, does it matter?)
My first from Nickel Brook and what a great introduction !

As a my expectation, Cafe' Del Bastardo Looks the part of an Imperial: enough inviting foam, gets you in and then gets dark. Smells also are the real thing, but better: coffee first, then chocolate, then vanilla and, of course, malt.
Tastes are quite, quite smooth. Absolutely no indication of 70 IBU (thankfully) and only a little alcohol presence in the finish (but that is forgivable given that everything else about this stout is lovely.)

My first from Nickel Brook, I went on their site and was totally amazed at what they have achieved in 12 years. A stable of cash cows, a barrel program (of which this sample is hard to beat) and even something for those who like to walk on the wild side. Their motto is "Beer, Down To A Science." Perhaps. But, based on Cafe', they have figured out the art also.

Bottle to sniffer.

LOOK: Dark jet black color and very thick. No head or retention.

AROMA: cappuccino, fudge, molasses.

TASTE; fudgy chocolate, touch of coffee bitterness in the finish.

FEEL: pretty thick and chewy. No carbonation. Smooth finish.

Very nice. I think I liked the other Nickel Brook I had better though (Kentucky Bastard).

2018 vintage, 500ml, 12% ABV. Pretty impressed with this beer. Heavy coffee taste, barrel smells and tastes amazing. Medium to heavy mouthfeel with a sticky sweetness, as if maple syrup had been added. Great stuff and would buy again, despite the hefty price - $18/500ml. Purchased by a friend in Antioch, IL.

Had a very strong bourbon aroma, takes a while to them notice espresso beans, some dark and milk chocolate. Taste is very similar, bourbon totally dominates but the alcohol is fairly well hidden.

750 ml bottle into a snifter. Had 2/17/18.

Pours dark and oily looking, mostly opaque, with a short head and very spotty lacing. Aromas of bourbon, coffee, malt, a good amount of smoke, molasses, oak, toffee, charcoal, some caramel, light chocolate. Smells great. The taste is reasonably similar: bourbon, coffee, molasses, malt, caramel, some chocolate, less smoke, light oak. A light sweetness in the middle, only a bit of alcohol. Tastes great, too. Really smooth for the ABV, a solid but slightly lighter body for the style, well carbonated.

The coffee is front and center, especially with the aroma, it’s like a cup of java. Well developed flavors and aromas, the Heaven Hill barrels are great. Hides the ABV really well. Well worth a purchase at a slightly high price point.

I don't really know why I keep going back to Nickel Brook, as this is now the 11th beer I have tried from this brewery and not one impressed me. I was looking forward to this one, thanks to the lack of a great coffee porters in these parts.
Well, this isn't it.
Yes, you can taste coffee but the bourbon (gross) overwhelms everything, save perhaps the chocolate. It is way too boozy. Without exaggeration, I was nauseous throughout the drinking process, even though I took my time. And this is not the first time I had this feeling from Nickel Brook. I don't know what they put in their beer but it can't be anything good.
Of course it has many redeeming qualities - the nose, the head, the texture and even (some of) the taste. But not enough to rinse and repeat.

Taste: bold, dark chocolate, vanilla, woody, smoked malt, coffee, molasses sweet, warming alcohol finish. Nice, rich chocolate, oak, bourbon, coffee bean nose. Black, opaque, dark tan foam head, some sticky lace on glass. Full Body. Complex and what a kick in the finish, A sipper to be enjoyed. 70 IBUs
