Notes: Formerly known as Mystery Beer C

Wicked Awesome is a juicy IPA that is as tasty as its name suggests. This hazy New England-Style IPA is a generously hopped dank brew that bursts with tropical fruit in the aroma and on the palate. Pouring a beautiful opaque yellow with a fluffy white head, this beer is a true champion. Flavours of tropical fruit and citrus dance pleasantly on your tongue in a harmony, followed by a refreshing and crisp finish. It's obvious why it was the winner of our first ever Mystery Pack contest. Give the people what they want, right? Well, here you go!

473 mL can from the LCBO; one of four included in their Experimental Mystery Pack. This one is dated Nov 22 2017 and was served slightly chilled.

Pours a turbid, cloudy golden-blonde colour, rife with sediment flakes that slowly hover about within the liquid. One solid inch of puffy white foam lasts no longer than 3-4 minutes before fading into the ether, leaving behind a smooth coat of lacing on its way down. A thin collar and a few bubbly patches continue to obscure the surface. I'm getting pineapple juice, passion fruit, lychee, melon and mandarin orange on the nose - the tropical fruit vibes are positively uncanny. No idea which hops were used in this one, but I'd wager Citra was one of them.

Wow - this is a really smooth IPA, with very little lingering bitterness on the back end... just what you'd expect from a Nor'easter. The grainy-sweet pale malt backdrop is there, but might as well be an afterthought when placed aside the juicy, fruity, delicious hop flavours which immediately overwhelm it. I'm getting stone fruit such as apricot and peach, as well as some mild grapefruit and orange citrus. Pineapple, mango, melon and lychee show up in bit roles, followed up by dank herb and pine resiny bitterness at the finish. Mildly fruity aftertaste that swiftly fades. Medium-full in body, with relatively low carbonation and a soft, smooth, fulfilling texture that makes this IPA highly satisfying to sip. I love Headstock, and this is at least as good, if not slightly better.

Nickel Brook's Mystery Beer C is a very strong contender for the best of the pack - though as an admitted hop addict, it's fair to point out that I have a strong affinity for these types of beers to begin with. Having now sampled all four of the beers in this pack, I'd say it's a coin flip between this one and the session IPA (#B). If only IRL elections tended to present such a compelling array of options...

Another tallboy can, re-branded as "Wicked Awesome IPA" - this one is dated Jun 27 2018. Glad to see that it won the popular vote... and it's also nice to see that I was correct about the Citra (in an entirely self-satisfying, patting-my-own-back sort of way). No point in changing the grades this time around, as it's just as good as it was when I first reviewed it - a fantastic pale ale, and a quality example of the NE substyle: it's definitely going into my IPA rotation.

Final Grade: 4.18, an A-

473 ml can, served cold into a tulip. Another LCBO purchase, cost came out to about $3.25 CDN.

Appearance - A beautiful pale golden / yellow colored beer with loads of haze, an epic two finger white head, tons of retention.

Smell - Loads of tropical fruit with pineapple and lychee and mango being at the forefront. Tons of tropical notes all over with enough grain built in to make this brew multi dimensional.

Taste - Close to the nose, but the tropical flavors, while super inviting, juicy and tasty don;t have the depth of flavor that the nose has. Tropical notes, middling bitterness, but lots of tropical sweetness.

Mouthfeel - Smooth and creamy, plenty of carbonation and medium-light bodied. Lots of juiciness and carbonation is appropraite.

Overall - A very yummy IPA that I would be happy to enjoy again. A couple of tweaks can really ramp this up as the nose is absolutely top notch and the flavor isn't far behind. Worth a try and my favorite of the mystery pack although the session IPA was very impressive as well. Good to see these guys putting out all sorts of high quality beers.

Returned to Edmonton from Hamilton. 16 oz can pours a pale slightly cloudy golden/yellow with fragile puffy white head; noted sediment settling in glass. Aroma citrus forward with tropical notes - pineapple prominent - reminds me of that fruit drink 5-Alive. Taste is largely sweet citrus, again pineapple - perhaps slightly overripe - for 64 IBU really pretty minimal bitterness - citra hop does show. Medium mouthfeel verging to thin side but seemed appropriate. Overall a very drinkable IPA with limited bitterness - wicked awesome might over state but really good.

Slightly hazy, but not really.Lots of hop aroma with a very harsh, over hopped bite to the pallet right out of the gate. A bit of a pallet killer. This is not a New England IPA. If the idea was to over hop, than filter your product all the while butchering Blue collar charm with phrases like “wicked awesome!”, than you need to do some more research as to what’s really going on in New England. Dare I say, visit this state, tour some of these breweries and actually try one of their IPA’s, or two. Then, come back and brew a beer with an original name. Do what you do to the best of your ability and stop trying to be something you’re not.

473 mL can
Served in a stemless wine glass

This beer pours a hazy amber color. It is topped with a couple inches of beige head that leaves some nice lacing.

The smell has a fair amount of malty and biscuit-y aroma. I also get citrus and tropical fruit. It seems balanced.

The taste is malty. It tastes old. That could be due to being an import. The hops are faded. I get some bitterness but no juiciness.

Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel

There were numbers stamped on the bottom but not discernible to me. I would love to try it fresh.

I got a can of this beer from a beer store in Sault Ste Marie whilst there for my son's hockey tournament. It poured a hazy yellow with white head that is leaving a nice lace. The scent had dank ripe tangerine notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with slight bitter tropical fruit presence. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall its a solid beer.

Can: Poured a medium hazy/cloudy yellow color ale with a nice large white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of citrusy hops notes with nice floral undertones. Taste is a good mix of citrusy hops notes with some nice floral undertones. Body is slightly below average with good carbonation. Enjoyable NEIPA but doesn’t have that explosion of tropical flavours I was expecting.
