Malevolent
Nickel Brook Brewing Co.
We don’t actually wish you harm but our Malevolent Imperial Black IPA will assault your taste buds with wreck-less abandon! Evil might be represented in its black colour. Alcohol is definitely there. But Simcoe, Columbus and Amarillo hops have been used to a disturbing amount to give the flavour and aroma in this behemoth Imperial Black IPA. You have been warned!

From Labirratorium. 1 year after bottling. In Teku glass. Playing Oceanhorn. Typical notes of style well implemented. Citrusy, herbal, with abv well hidden. But isnt worth its price (7+€) as exist cheaper alternatives

Big black DIPA - pours black/dark brown with thick mocha brown head. Aroma of a bit of floral pine - subdued. Initial taste chocolate piney with bit of bitterness, but follows to finish with a bit of fruity flavour - found slightly odd and unexpected - not bad just unusual - dark malt on hoppy fruitiness. Good - not great.

Received a can in the Spring 2016 CanBIF....thanks ckoop!
Even an easy pour resulted in a big, foamy head. Not much aroma until it dissipated, and even then, a bit mild. In terms of taste, nice juicy/tropical hop notes followed by a roasty finish. Despite the ABV, the alcohol is well hidden. You could drink a few of these before you hit the floor. Overall, one of the better Black IPA I've tried. Cheers!

Purchased at the brewery for $5.00 for a 473ml can. Served at 6deg C in a draught glass
A- Opens well and pours a 2" high brown thick rich head that lasts forever. Came to more pours before it filmed out. Extremely dark brown colour.
S- Almost nothing at all
T- Roasted malt and chocolate. Light hops. Sweet. Not a bomb but balanced well. Hides the alcohol well. Can't even taste it.
M- Creamy good
O- Very good brew but expensive. Nice to try but will likely not buy again though due to price point to flavor ratio.
Food Pairing
This pretty good black IPA went well with........ Tandoori chicken!! On Basmati rice for sure!
Enjoy

This is not a subtle beer. Not one little bit. It is gorgeous in the glass - deep, rich and foamy. The nose is surprisingly evergreen and not surprisingly char. The taste is absolutely in line with beers in this style - it's heavy, chewy and imminently satisfying. The higher ABV is disguised nicely and leaves you wanting nothing. Like facing a masked wrestler, Malevolent is not for the faint of heart.

I've never seen a can filled to the top like this? This is a big brew, but it hides the alcohol well. I really expected more of a punch, but it's balanced nicely. Perhaps a bit heavy on the dark malt. Judging by the colours and flavour, I'm thinking its black patent. This is quite good, but it's not Sublimely Self Righteous.
This is really more of an imperial/American double stout... At least I would have scored it much higher in that style category.
Thanks Bakagaijin!

this is a great IPA, it looks beautiful, nice black color, almost like a satin, strong hop presence of a nicely toasted malt. despite its strength, it is wonderfully balanced.

Pint served on tap at Rib Eye Jack's Burlington location. Malevolent is a beer I've been looking for but haven't been able to find for quite a while now, glad to finally get a chance to try it,
Appearance - Jet black beer with a long lasting finger of tan head that lingers on top. Some decent lacing left around the glass. Looks ominous,
Smell - Big nose that is typical yet well executed. Some hoppy tropical goodness with citrus fruits and a hint of melon followed by a dark roasty aroma, charred grains and a subtle hint of coffee.
Taste - Exactly like the nose, lots of citrus and tropical flavors up front, followed by a roasty grain backbone. Some coffee ground flavor is present but only there in that the bitterness of the hops mixes this flavor with a bitter tropical fruit.
Mouthfeel - It's heavy but for a 9.5% ABV Black IPA, it's actually light on its feet, with modest carbonation. Feels pretty good and booze isn't too noticeable.
Overall - Disclaimer, I love Black IPA's I feel like I'm getting the best of many worlds, with a big hop aroma and flavor with some supreme bitterness yet a big roasty flavor usually on the back ends that I enjoy so much in stouts. Malevolent hits all of the criteria, and while not being the best in the style that I have tried, it's a damn fine example and something I will revisit, should it become regularly available, or if I happen to come back to this location.Definitely worth a shot.
