Drank next to the bourbon version.

APPEARANCE: Same thick, pitch black pour but yields a half finger, thicker looking, dark tan head with great retention. Jet black body with no carbonation evident. A ring and slight wisp remain leaving touches of lacing down the glass. Blackest of all black beers from De Molen, and a nice looking head on this one. Nice stuff.

SMELL: Way different than any BA stout these guys have made. Rum barrel is really strong, making it come out as sweet candy and marzipan. Sugary bananas, cream, cotton candy with lots of marzipan. Some toffee, butterscotch and milk chocolate if you're inventive, but this is mostly sweet candy and marzipan. Not all that appealing.

TASTE: Weirder and boozier than any BA De Molen. Big rum barrel and lots of alcohol up front, then some sweet sugary candy, toffee, butterscotch, and a wave of marzipan overtakes the finish. Big aftertaste of rum, cotton candy, sugary banana and butterscotch with a dominant marzipan flavor lingers forever. Some burnt and charred malts and bitter dark chocolate from the base stout try to play a roll, but this is all sugary candy and marzipan here. Relatively unappealing and off-putting, unless you like candy and marzipan beer.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes sticky on the palate. Some heat lingers. A pretty good feel.

OVERALL: Way different than I'd expected from these guys. There hasn't been much rum barreled stuff before, and whatever happens in to the future, I hope rum barrels don't meet big, black stouts like this again anytime soon. This was way worse than the bourbon barreled version, as the sweet candy and marzipan made this really difficult to drink. I gladly gave half my glass to Drain. De Molen is fantastic, but when you do as much as these guys do, they can't all work.
