Smells fantastic. Highly chocolaty. Smooth on the tongue, after taste has a highly roasted peat taste.

Good Imperial stout from our friends from De Molen. Nice dark with earthy notes.

Got this one at the De Molen beer shop in Bodegraven

From a bottle into a snifter
EBC: 422
EBU: 34
23.9* Plato
Bottled on 3 December 2014
Best Before 3 December 2039

APPEARANCE: Clear dark brown pour yields a 2 finger, medium, creamy looking, light tan head with very good retention. Clear black body with no carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full wisp cap and coats the sides of the glass. Splotchy wisp remains leaving some falling dots of lacing down the glass.

SMELL: A lot of oak and piercing alcohol. Hair spray, paint, light caramel and leather, but this is mostly dominated by hair spray and alcohol. Not appealing and very little complexity.

TASTE: Caramel and some oak flavors up front, tannins and paint thinner with light toffee at the swallow. A bolder and lingering finish of oak, tannins, some caramel and toffee sweetness, as well as a bit of hair spray and alcohol. Paint and overripe banana is there too. Not as off-putting as the nose, but not much better either. Lacking the depth and complexity that their barrel aged offerings often show. Too much oak tannins and perfume-like alcohol.

PALATE: Medium body and carbonation. A little prickly on the palate, goes down fine and finishes slightly mouth-coating. A touch of heat lingers. Alright, but not quite creamy enough.

OVERALL: This is definitely under par for the course. The barrel aged stuff coming out of this brewery is usually much nicer than the last few I’ve tried. Too much paint, tannins and piercing alcohol without the depth and character I’ve come to expect. I’m going to pass on more of these and hope to see something more interesting in the future.

Dark ruby pour, almost opaque. Very little tan head with virtually no retention. Dark cherry smell, barrel, a hint of bourbon - not a very complex smell. The taste compensates for this, by being more complex, but not too balanced. Sour cherries, a bit of smoke, barrel sourness, vanilla, coffee. Medium body, more light than I would have liked. Soft mouthfeel, with the alcohol being present (not overwhelming, for my taste), and with a bitter aftertaste.

Poured from a 33 cL bottle into a snifter. This was bottled on 03-12-2014.

Appearance: Pours very dark brown/black with a half finger of tan head.

Smell: Soy sauce, dark chocolate, vanilla but fairly balanced. Roasty.

Taste: Matches the smell pretty well - chocolate, some plum, vanilla.

Mouth-feel: Pretty thin body with low carb.

Overall: Some dark fruits and chocolate along with that soy saucy flavor. Thin body but very drinkable for the flavor. Enjoyable and different.
