Bottle: Poured a dark cloudy brown color ale with a medium size dark foamy head with OK retention and light retention. Aroma of caramelized malt and dry toffee notes with some bourbon notes is quite intense and enticing. Taste is also a mix of heavy caramelized malt notes with some bourbon, woody notes and dry toffee notes with limited amount of residual sugar notes. Solid barleywine that reflects both breweries very well.

Appearance: Pours a murky chestnut topped by a frothy beige head; fast fading, it is rather leggy and leaves a trail of spots

Smell: Blood orange and caramel; honey, to some extent, as well

Taste: Aggressive from the outset, there is a very sweet caramel and honey aspect that is assaulted by the blood orange hop flavors; the bitterness is somewhat overwhelming but as it moves to the back of the throat, there are very interesting malt elements underneath, such as raisin and treacle; boozy finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low to moderate carbonation; warmth in the gullet

Overall: Interesting, but I wouldn't want to seek this out again; the bitterness is just too strong and throws the beer out of balance

That is, well . . . That is something. Baby's first barleywine (how have I been a member here for 10+ years and that's my first barleywine?), and it's intense. Syrupy texture. Thick body. Bitter, herbal, West Coast hops, honeyed sweetness, candi sugar (?), big malt quotient (duh). Super alcohol kick.

Delicious, but super intense--even bottling this in 330mL portions seems excessive. I was glad with sipping two ounces like a whiskey.

Bottled 8/5/15

Beige head. Copper brown color.

Very malty as expected. More of an English bw than American. Toffee, raisins, molasses, caramel. Some earthy hops. Brown sugar.

Medium to full bodied. A bit of heat shows.

A big beer. Decent. Nothing out of this world.

330ml bottle - a decent approximation of what actually having Hair of Dog products in Alberta might be like, I suppose. And there's Binkie - all smudged on the bottom of the front label!

This beer pours a murky, dark orangish brown colour, with one skinny-ass Portland hipster jean finger of puffy, weakly foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves a few instances of creeping tendril lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of pungent caramel/toffee/treacle malt, concentrated pithy orange and red grapefruit juice, besotted raisins, honeyed vanilla beans, a touch of acrid lemon floor cleaning agent, musty yeast, and further floral, leafy, and well-perfumed hop bitters. The taste is very strong mixed citrus flesh (like it's somehow been reduced, and infused into cheap vodka), grainy caramel and toffee malt, floral honey, muddled earthy spice, a hard to pin down herbal remedy thing (almost band-aid like), estery pine and random forest floor detritus greens, and some further gritty and probing metallic alcohol astringency.

The bubbles are fairly underwhelming in their hard to really get a good read on frothiness, the body a stellar medium-heavy weight, and sort of smooth - that boozy citrus thing always about to barge in and make my tongue feel all fuzzy. It finishes off-dry, the inherent bitterness of the big hop contingent keeping things barely sane and lazily between the ditches.

Binkie Claws aligns nicely with my memory of the bottle of Doggie Claws that I brought back from our trip to the Rose City a number of years ago now - big and brash, the alcohol and focused West Coast hops perhaps coasting right past Triple IPA territory, and into American Quadrupel! Not so crazy a concept as drinking a mere 12oz of this stuff is, amirite?

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a somewhat hazy orange amber with a thin white head that dissipates quickly to sparse patches. Aroma of caramel malt, orange, apricot, raisins, toffee. Flavor is candi malt with slight caramel, lots of orange, raisins, citrus hops; finishes with orange and grapefruit rind and lingering citrus hops. Medium bodied with slight creaminess and good carbonation. The aroma seemed to lean very strongly in the direction of an English barleywine with a little orange infused. The taste, however, is clearly American barleywine influenced, with lighter malt and much more citrus presence. It departs from that style with little caramel malt character; it's sweet and citrusy, almost like a citrus aperltif. This is my last of my De Molen / Hair of the Dog comparisons (after Fred and Adam) and my impression of those is stronger with this one; it's hard to believe that these are the same recipe. Hair of the Dog Doggie Claws has a classic American barleywine profile with caramel malt with dried and fresh light stone fruit. My current comparison bottle, from 2015, unfortunately is a HotD with low carbonation and throws off the flavor somewhat. Not a huge problem, because I have one of these every year at the holidays. Even with that caveat, the HotD version has more dried fruit flavors and more subdued hopping; darker color. The De Molen version, while interesting is much more citrusy, boozy and hoppy. I was impressed with the other collaborations, even though they were quite different from each other, but this one seemed less interesting. Worth a try, but I'd prefer a (properly carbonated) HotD one of these.

an interesting blonde barleywine here, the third ive had in this de molen and hair of the dog collaboration series, which has been a revelation. i love the yeast here, its definitely more in the english style in that regard, but this is a very unique take on the style. it has a pils type malt base, definitely a longer boil than most lagers get, but that flavor is still there, just slightly caramelized. its not without its bitterness either though, somewhat tannic on the back end, and definitely hoppy too. the honey is my favorite part, it adds a great floral brightness to an otherwise really heavy beer, and i think with the fluffy bready yeast, a wonderful synergy is reached. notes of wet wood, brown sugar, straw, and golden raisin all present themselves. its not hot, but there is certainly a peaking through of the alcohol, more so as it warms up. less of this than expected for its strength though. i get a light vanilla note on the tongue after the swallow too. this would be cool in a cognac barrel or something, it has some of that richness already. i hope these guys keep the series going, its been a lot of fun to drink through these super unique beers. this is one of the best ones yet.

2015 vintage poured from fridge temp into a tulip. Pours murky brown with almost no head. Nose is phenomenal. Raspberries, caramel, wheat, nuts, and some nice pine. Taste is awesome. A slight hoppy bitterness up front, but a really solid caramel backbone with great dark fruit notes. This is exactly how an American barleywine should taste. Not just a hop bomb, but full of complex flavor. I would honestly put this smack dab in the middle between the classic English barleywine and American barleywine styles. Mouthfeel is robust, earthy, and viscous. Overall, an amazing beer.

Bottle dated 8/5/2015 (about 20 months old). Aroma has honey, floral hops, orange, toffee, bread, and the slightest hint of dark fruit. Hmmm the taste is interesting. HUGE orange flavor, and YUUUGE bitterness. Even after 2 years, that's one intensely bitter beer. Orange peel, honey, herbs, citrus, raisin, molasses, sweet caramel also in the taste. Also big alcohol burn. Some good things going on: the big orange/honey/molasses flavor comes on strong at first but is soon overwhelmed by the tidal wave of bitterness. An interesting, but much too bitter beer.

330ml bottle poured into tulip.

Pours a deep, murky orange-brown with half a finger of tan head that leaves dripping splotches of lace as it recedes.

Smells of rich caramel and toffee, grapefruit and spiced orange, honey, sugar dusted raisins, alcohol and floral, citric hops.

Tastes of stewed oranges, caramel tarts with raisins, more rich honey, more citrus rind and cut flower hops, and threatening alcohol.

Feels thick and creamy. Full bodied with light carbonation. Finishes pretty dry despite all that sweetness.

Verdict: Highly recommended. A pleasure to drink even if it's not exactly easy.

Too sweet for my personal taste. The combination of almonds and honey gives a Marzipan type flavor that I don't enjoy.
