Chilled 75cl bottle. Corked and caged with a layer of black wax poured over both. This has one of those labels that lets you know you have a product that the maker has put every ounce of effort into. The label reads like a dosier and this is bottle #132. This bottle is consumed in a sniffer.

Body is deep and dark. Just shy of being opaque with a slither of glowing cola hue coming through when held to a light source. It pours like something that has absolutely no carbonation and it produces a head to match.... well at least for first impressions.

Once the sniffer glass is put down to rest and as I think about trying a long pour to produce at least some head tan effervescent bubbles begin to flow forth from the bottom of the glass and culminate at the surface where an equally tan head begins to gradually develop.

The aroma deviates from Russian Stout somewhat, the appearance and behavior are practically textbook Russian Stout but the tactile elements come across as a mix of dark strong belgian or quad. Sticky sweet malts dominate and juicy chewy dark fruits balance out the coffee and caramel molasses sweetness.

Malt again dominates when it comes to tasting. Definitely sweet and sticky. One thing I pick up here that I didn't aromatically are the hops that balance nicely. Of course those dark juicy fruits are present but all in all, this is a heavily malt driven taste.

In the mouth, This. Is. Smooth! Velvet smoothness and perfectly weighted. Carbonation is light as one might expect but the body of this thing is grand. The alcohol is noticeable and at 11% you would be silly to expect otherwise, however it i not aggressive and it sits in very nicely.

Very good and only slightly off the mark in the taste and aroma due to the slight identity crisis but the mouthfeel and wight is amazing and definitely something to write home about.

Bottled August 2010

Ok, on to the goods, poured into a snifter

Appearance- Nearly a gusher, ught oh! Not a good sign for an impy stout. Pours a very deep brown with a huge rocky tan head. A little lacing left behind.

Smell- Lots of roasted malts, some coffee and chocolate. Subtle dark fruits. A slight nuttiness and a little pine. Smells pretty decent.

Taste- Some sweeter chocolate up front with a reasonable coffee roast. A subtle cherry and raison, with some molasses. A fairly pronounced nuttiness again towards the finish with light tobacco. A pleasant almost smokiness throughout. Lingering coffee and a little pine on the finish. Carbonation may be masking the flavor a bit.

Mouthfeel- Medium body and high carbonation for the style. A warming is here, but the ABV is hid well. Having a little trouble getting past the carbonation.

Overall- I got scared upon opening the bottle, but all is well that ends well. No signs of infection, just a bit highly carbonated. Solid overall, plan on doing some serious long term ageing with my other bottles, just to see what happens.

Seems to be some widespread carbonation issues with this beer. Some batches nearly flat, to some very highly carbonated. If you get a bottle in the happy medium, I feel it could be pretty epic, as the flavors are great.

Poured from fridge temp. Pours jet black with almost no head. Nose is chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruit, and caramel. Taste follows the nose, but with a burnt bitterness upfront. Lots of coffee, tobacco, chocolate, licorice, and some dark fruit. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy - nicely coats the mouth. Overall, a really nice stout.

6/5/17 - So good. Just a little smokey today. My dessert beer on Monday during PBW.
11-30-16 - Again on tap at Monk's. Tasty with an earthy feel and aftertaste. No head and no lacing. Easy drinking.
3-28-16 - Cease and Desist On tap at Monk's in Philly. Served in a tall stemmed tulip. No head. Dark brown. Not too sweet, yet oh so tasty. Wish I could stay for one more. Get some soon.

Huge thanks to Greenville Beer Exchange for this growler of deliciousness.

A - Poured from a growler into a plastic Rockhoppers cup (hey, it was a tailgate). Pours ebony with a big dark brown head that sticks around for a bit.

S - There is an enormous complexity here. There's dark chocolate, lighter chalky cocoa nibs, dark roasted malt, almost a slight peppery taste.

T - All the fine aromas of the nose find themselves quite represented in the flavor of this big beer. Boozy and strong, but possessing robust flavors.

M - Slightly thinner bodied,

11.2 oz bottle with waxed cap.
This vintage was bottled on 27th of August 2010.
Bottle number of 1179.

poured into tulip glass.

Appearance: light black bodied beer with a reddish hue when held up to light. No light gets through the body of the beer. Head is a light to medium tan head. Aggressive pour really makes this beer gush. A subtle pour gives you 2 fingers head easily. Sticky lacing sticks well and the head on this beer has some serious staying power. Beautiful looking stout!

Smell: Bittersweet bakers chocolate, oak, vanilla and dark fruits. U can even smell some hops through the massive malt profile.

Taste: Heavy cocoa with a light note of roasted coffee. Figs are in there too. Mid-taste you get a hit of booze with charcoal and smokiness. In the finish the smokiness gets heavy turning into a burnt flavor. Its also earthy and hints of peat.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with really lively moderate carbonation. This beer is carbonated to perfection.

Overall: First De Molen beer. I am impressed. I really enjoyed this beer and will look for this brewery more often. Great Stout!

Got on trade. Served at 10deg C in a challis. 330ml bottle

A- Opens well but pours no head at all. Slight film and it's gone in seconds. Nice dark brown colour though

S- Tobacco. Raisins. Sweet

T- Molasses. Sweet. Tobacco. Nice blend and the spices are nicely put together. Has a mellow nature and can go down pretty quickly if you don't watch.

M- Thick and rich going down then dries out. Pretty sticky though.

O- Nice blend. Will buy again if I see it.

Food Pairing

This rather rich and thick brew went well with...... Brazed beef short ribs slow cooked in a tomato and onion sauce
