Formerly Amerikaans
Dry hopped with Amarillo
De Molen beers are not all about heavy flavours and body. Now and then it’s time for something different and refreshing. This light amber coloured Bitter with an American touch is a great example. English Bitters are mild and malty. American hops give an ale a bitter citrus and grassy character. Amerikaans has the best of both the old and the new world. A very delicious session beer at 4.5% ABV.

A- This pours a deep amber color, and shows fairly hazy. I love the thick beautiful head that forms after pouring into my tulip glass....it is tan colored, and starts about three fingers in thickness, before settling down into a thick layer over the liquid. There appears to be a decent amount of carbonation here, and the lacing also appears to be thick around the inside of the glass, but does slip back into the brew in a uniform fashion. Overall a nice looking beer!
S- Initial aromas that are quite heavily of sweet caramel/toffee laden malts, aromatic hop bitterness from the dry hopping used, hints of meaty tropical fruits (banana, mango), mild dry grassy notes, yeasty bread crusts, oat flakes and a finish that is a blend of leafy dry hop cones, apple core.
T- The flavors are a well blended combination of robust malt sweetness and hop bitterness. The sweet....caramel, toffee, muted milk chocolate, creme truffle, candied nuts and some orchard fruit funk. The bitterness of the hops used really helps balance this out and its strange but on the finish, I taste lemon iced tea, which provides a cleansing property, and allows the leafy nature to linger on after the swallow. A nice reminder of a good British Mild!
M/O- Medium bodied and the carbonation is rather zesty I find, but I don't mind this....it keeps the brew lighter in the belly. The drinkability factor is good, as I would be able to enjoy more than one of these in a sitting. Goes good with a bbq rib dinner, as I did while trying this out. I would recommend and have been impressed with De Molen thus far in their offerings!

330ml bottle poured into a pint glass.
Hazy deep amber hue, it tops with thick silky off-white head that withstands with excellent retention before slowly subsiding to thin layer of eternal foamy crown, lots of sticky lacing appeared along the glass-side.
Hop obviously overcomes malt in a nose and quite inviting (thanks to the dry hopped part) with varieties of aroma ranging from citrus, passion fruit, ripe mango, floral, resin, grassy, and herbal while malt with background notes of caramel and toffee.
You can get much of malty goodness in the flavor. It nicely harmonizes with hop profile with notes of bread and caramel while hop mainly provides a note of citrus together with herbal, grassy and moderate bitterness at the end. Overall, the taste is not much juicy and fruity as reflected in the aroma but tends to be more pronounced on malt.
Medium body with smooth mouthfeel and lively carbonation generated generous amount of frothy wave through the palate, finish is rather dry.
This beer is a pretty good mix between English Bitter and American Pale Ale. In my opinion, I think it tends to be likely more on American side with a notable hop character.

Undercarbed, even for a bitter, but great flavor

330ml bottle, now with the more general black and white De Molen labeling.
This beer pours a, well it doesn't really pour, per se, but rather comes spewing out of the bottle upon cap popping, so good on me for immediately directing said deluge over a glass. Anyways, I'm still left with a whack of foam, which is attractive enough in its menacingly frothy and bubbly manner, I suppose, but bottle conditioning was not part of the deal, I thought. It's going to be a while, so I best go hit the loo.
All right, back now, and this one smells of chalky Flintstones vitamins, citrusy and faintly piney hops, grainy caramel malt, a tiny earthy and funky yeastiness, herbal tincture, and a tame stone fruit orchard fruitiness. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, a waning flinty chalk character, wet dark bread, orange zest, faint leafy pinecone notes, a hint of candied lemon, and some further unchecked herbal and weedy hoppiness.
The bubbles, as already established, are quite pervasive, and on the palate they manifest in a tightly-held fizziness, the body on the light side of medium weight, and so-so smooth, the carbonation and hops just a bit too clumsy hereabouts. It finishes off-dry, but barely, as the malt starts to show its cracks in the face of the various side players, who find power in collectivism.
A decent enough showcase for this venerable American hop, too bad this Dutch concoction screws up the presentation side of things, which is either a quality control issue, or a cultural gap, hard to say here. At any rate, this tastes good, even if the name (being Dutch) reminds me of 'Afrikaans', which means absolutely nothing.
