A: The beer is very dark brown (close to near black) in color and poured with a finger high creamy brownish gray head that has excellent retention properties and consistently left a quarter finger high head covering the surface.
S: The taste has aromas of dark fruits and roasted malts.
T: The taste has fruity flavors of grapes and roasted malts along with some hints of coffee and nuts.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate to high amount of carbonation.
O: Despite its strength, this beer is very easy to drink because there are no traces of alcohol present in the smell or taste.

Pours a one-finger khaki head that fades quickly leaving traces lace. Dark opaque brown color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Caramel and dark chocolate nose and flavor is balanced with caramel and baked chocolate. Higher ABV is hidden. Bottled 24/5/2013, $6.49 for a 330ml bottle from Julio's Liquors Westborough, MA.

Poured from 330mL bottle into a dimpled mug.

Appearance: rich brown hue with a mild haze and a thin layer of tan foam which doesn't stick around too long. Not bad.

Smell: rich and sweet coffee, chocolate and roasty aroma. There's even a little dash of toffee in there; very enticing.

Taste: very sweet up front with some caramel/toffee character, followed by a chocolate and coffee flavor that is milder than the aroma. Bitterness is moderate but balanced. A dark, sweet treat.

Mouthfeel: the body is quite light considering the size of this beer; carbonation is relatively low but the overall effect is rather smooth. It's decent.

Overall: a good tasting beer that could use a little bit more substance.

A - Poured a muddy, chunky brown with lots of active carbonation and half a finger of beige head that settled into a thin ring of retention.

S - Initial aroma is quite chocolatey with a roasted malt character and a hint of coffee.

T - Pleasant roasted malt quality with a hint of chocolate and some bittersweet cocoa notes. Finishes with a hint of earthy bitterness, albeit rather subdued.

M - Medium bodied with a smooth, albeit a tad watery, texture. Finish is semi-dry with a touch of hop bitterness on the palate.

D - Surprisingly nice stout with plenty of chocolate and roasted malt goodness.

pours thin brown color, but once it is in the glass is a nice deep deep brown with a nice three fingers of head. bobbling around like an ice cream float. nice. MUCH better than the Hel & Verdoemenis... which is not carbonated at all.

chocolate an coffee on the nose also smells creamy. like a bit of dairy in it.

taste is very thin, coffee and bitter. It is just ok for me... had it after a piece of chocolate and it was great, but not really for me. As this warms, the roastieness is coming out more... and it is very dry, which is a nice touch. I wish it was a bit thicker, but it is an good example of its style.
NOT worth the pricetag on its head though.

for an original recipe out of 1914 London... they were not drinking too badly back then, not bad.

My wife picked this brew up from the local brew store. It has a dark, but not quite black, complexion, with a very thin head. Lightly carbonated, but not quite flat. The aroma is of molasses, smokey, roasted scents, malt, and dark fruit. The taste is semisweet, and the body is full, but flat. Not bad, and very interesting.

Clear yet dark brown body topped with a rich, creamy tan head. Roasted grains, slightly toasty; baking chocolate in the aroma. Lightly charred grain flavor, bitterness sneaking in midway and lingering in the finish, slight alcohol warmth; slight sourness. Medium-light bodied; clean with lingering sugar residuals.

A great looking stout; great roasted scents. I was somewhat surprised at the relative lightness to the body. The rich, dark malted character dominates the initial taste, giving away to a nice hop bitterness (and, perhaps, grain huskiness or tannin note) and a faint hint at the relatively high ABV.

Appearance: Dark brown starts with a huge, tan head, fades to a nice cap - foamy lacing

Smell: Cooked, roasted malts, and a ton of chocolate - a lot of sweetness, a lot of booze - kind of smells like a burnt barleywine (similar sweetness level) - lots of dark fruits

Taste: Follows the aroma - dry, dark chocolate malts and burnt, roasty flavors - an interesting malt profile - cooked, caramelized malts - chocolaty - a lot of dark fruit flavors that lend a slight tart flavor - plum, fig - booze becomes more apparent as it warms

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium body, could be heavier given the flavor, a bit overcarbonated

Overall: Weird but tasty

The label describes this beer as a porter, but it definitely isn't. It is somewhere between a light, chocolatey quad, a Belgian stout, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale. Whatever this is, it was interesting.

Pours dark b rown to black in a Dogfish Head snifter with ruby red highlights when put to the light. A big, creamy manila head drops quickly to half an inch, then waits out the session.

Deep roasted malt with burnt sugar and some burnt coffee grinds.

Flavor follow the nose adding baker’s chocolate and nuts with a hint of dried fruits and cigar. This is yet another stout that improves with warmth.

Well balanced with a medium body, light carbonation and surprisingly no alcohol.

This is a laid-back beer for conversation. While there is not much to this one, it is done well and would match with a cigar. Having aged 18 months in the bottle, it has clearly mellowed out.

A: Very dark brown when held up to the light but otherwise appears black. Generous size beige head which slowly faded. All good here.

S: Chocolate and faint coffee/roasted malt aromas.

T: The chocolate features most prominently with the roasted malts/coffee flavors in the background. At times I picked up a faint sour taste. I would never have guessed this was 10% ABV

M: Fairly light body with good carbonation.

O: Good beer but I wonder if the flavors would have been more upfront earlier in it's life.

Poured a fairly dark brown with a decent amount of red highlights making its way through when held up to light. Head is super huge and frothy. The craters are impressive in this brown frothy masterpeice. Smells of dark fruit and smokey. Taste super malty and musty. Hints of dark fruit and coffee. Feel is kinda thin but nice.

this beer is lighter (in color) than expected. light penetrates all the way through the body and it is more of a really dark brown than a black. the smell is bursting with cherries and similar sweet dark fruits, though there are hints of chocolate and roasted malts as well.

the first thing i thought upon tasting the beer was that it resembles what i think a mix between a fruit lambic and an imperial stout would taste like. as the smell suggests, cherries are all over the place, accompanied by plum. there is a hint of the [almost] 10% alcohol, and some sweet, dark chocolate. a nice and smooth roasted coffee aftertaste.

the mouthfeel is nice and thick, though a little over-carbonated and the drinkability is limited to one 750ml bottle, though that is still certainly a lot.

A reasonable pour produces a three-finger thick, lightly browned, tan colored head in my New Belgium globe glass. The beer sits with an almost black color (just barely a hint of deepest, dark brown to it), but shows a brilliantly clear, dark ruby hue to it when held up directly to the light. The aroma is rich and roasted; notes of burnt toffee, caramelized-burnt prunes, coffee liquor, burnt / slightly acidic burnt grain, sweet dark chocolate and in the finish a combination of roasted saltine crackers and overly toasted, but not burnt bread. With a touch of alcohol noticeable it can smell a touch like fermented prune juice (very burnt of course) at times.

Much lighter in heft than I was expecting, much less than a 1.030 finishing gravity would suggest. This still has a viscous feel to it and a heft that coats the palate, but I would guess that it was a couple alcohol percentage points less than it actually is. Sweet tasting, but no where near cloying; the sweetness accentuates substantial cocoa flavors as well as notes of roasted raisins and a touch of figs. Finishes with a lightly bitter roast malt note, a round hop bitterness and a hint of burnt acidity; each of these combined does not really balance out the sweet up front malt; they actually help to balance the sweet malt quite well it is just that the sweet malt plays a bit more of a role here. The roast profile reminds me a little of a full-city roast coffee that has been heavily influenced by dark chocolate.

Almost more than the roast character, both the fruitiness and the chocolate notes play a substantial role here. A bit more balanced, even more refined than the London-style Porter, there is enough sweet malt here to stand up to the ample roast character, but I think I like the Porter better than this beer. This is still quite tasty and definitely interesting. It drinks a lot easier than its 10% would suggest.
