Bottled 5/24/2013 - Consumed 2/12/2017.

Pours a dark dirty brown. Opaque and full of floaters and yeast particles. No head to speak of, barely any life in the beer.

Smell has notes of rotting dark fruits, molasses, chocolate, cocoa, some coffee, and a dirty old hop aroma.

Taste is actually still prey good. There is a strong roasted malt flavor with a woody/ashy flavor. Some dark fruits, with molasses and cocoa. The foreign export stout flavor is in full force here with a strong hoppy presence on the back end proving a slight bitterness. The flavors taste a bit old, muted, but its still solid.

Feel is thin, yet not lacking in fullness from the flavor. Pretty much no carbonation - its still, flat and takes away from the overall quality of the beer.

Overall I would have loved to try this fresh, especially since it clearly did not hold up all that well with age. I imagine, based on what is here now, this was a really interesting and tasty beer when fresh.

My wife picked this brew up from the local brew store. It has a dark, but not quite black, complexion, with a very thin head. Lightly carbonated, but not quite flat. The aroma is of molasses, smokey, roasted scents, malt, and dark fruit. The taste is semisweet, and the body is full, but flat. Not bad, and very interesting.

Pours a dark brown color with minimal khaki colored head. Chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, and some caramel on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium to full bodied. Finishes with chocolate and some vanilla.

Pours a one-finger khaki head that fades quickly leaving traces lace. Dark opaque brown color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Caramel and dark chocolate nose and flavor is balanced with caramel and baked chocolate. Higher ABV is hidden. Bottled 24/5/2013, $6.49 for a 330ml bottle from Julio's Liquors Westborough, MA.

Poured from 330mL bottle into a dimpled mug.

Appearance: rich brown hue with a mild haze and a thin layer of tan foam which doesn't stick around too long. Not bad.

Smell: rich and sweet coffee, chocolate and roasty aroma. There's even a little dash of toffee in there; very enticing.

Taste: very sweet up front with some caramel/toffee character, followed by a chocolate and coffee flavor that is milder than the aroma. Bitterness is moderate but balanced. A dark, sweet treat.

Mouthfeel: the body is quite light considering the size of this beer; carbonation is relatively low but the overall effect is rather smooth. It's decent.

Overall: a good tasting beer that could use a little bit more substance.

Poured with anticipation into a Fremont small snifter. Pours pitch black, opaque in the glass with a spare half finger light brown head that dissipates slowly to a film and thick ring around the glass, leaving light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, dark chocolate, cocoa, a ghost of cherry and perhaps dark fruit, light lactose. Flavor is similar, with good dry dark toasted malt, milk chocolate, more noticeable cherry, althoug with little or no tartness. Finishes with light balanced charred malt and milk chocolate. Excellent creamy body and mouth feel. A spot on foreign stout profile with the interesting addition of the light cherry that gives it a bit of a Baltic porter feel. Flavors are somewhat subdued, but very well balanced and integrated leaving the impression of subtle refinement. If this is close to the results from original recipe, it is much richer and integrated than I expected from a turn of the century porter. I look forward to each rare arrival from de Molen and this was worth waiting for. Nothing stand out, but nicely balanced. ABV very well covered; tastes like a standard strength porter.

This tasted good kind of like toffee and chocolate but the smell was nauseating. It smelled like pineapple and tobacco spit.
