Pours a one-finger khaki head that fades quickly leaving traces lace. Dark opaque brown color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Caramel and dark chocolate nose and flavor is balanced with caramel and baked chocolate. Higher ABV is hidden. Bottled 24/5/2013, $6.49 for a 330ml bottle from Julio's Liquors Westborough, MA.

Pours a dark brown color with minimal khaki colored head. Chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, and some caramel on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium to full bodied. Finishes with chocolate and some vanilla.

A- This beer has a black body with a glow of dark brown at the very base. There is a creamy bubbly head that last for a good while and a strong carbonation of tiny bubbles gliding up the glass.

S- Even during the pour, there is a rich black roasted malt aroma with some light smoke and fruit notes that becomes more earthy as the beer warms.

T- This beer has a dark smooth roasted black malt flavor with some black grain notes and a soft nougat flavor. There is a soft charcoal note and a faint chicory note at the finish. An earthy hint turns tart at the finish that lingers for just a second.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel after the head is gone and a slight slippery texture to it. There is no real alcohol heat even after the beer warm a bit.

D- This beer has a nice deep roasted flavor with some good depth to it. This makes a nice session beer but at 10%ABV it will be a short session. There is no need for any age on this beer it is ready to drink now.

My wife picked this brew up from the local brew store. It has a dark, but not quite black, complexion, with a very thin head. Lightly carbonated, but not quite flat. The aroma is of molasses, smokey, roasted scents, malt, and dark fruit. The taste is semisweet, and the body is full, but flat. Not bad, and very interesting.

750ml. Bot march 2011. A very dark brown, some light does get through especially around the edge. A thin layer of white.

Aroma, dark fruit and dark chocolate. Maybe a little peaty maltyness.

Taste, a good dose of raspberry, cherry up front. Works quickly to more toasted malt, chocolate. Finishes pretty dry with a mild roast and cocoa.

Carbonation is just a bit too sharp to be creamy at first, but it gets there as it sets a bit. Solidly mid bodied. A very faint warming.
Knocking out a few more of the Belgian characteristics would have put this over the top. As it is, pretty good, though a tough price point.
The best I have had from the DeMolen brewery.

750ml bottle into my Orval glass...The beer pours light brown, settles a little dark with tons of carbonation. At least four fingers of light tan head, very good retention, but lacing is really light, as it falls hardly any sticks to the glass...The aroma and taste are on the lighter side and as I first sipped I was dreading that this was another boring English stout. Its similar as it is certainly on the lighter side in feel. However, after a couple sips the taste really comes out and is superbly balanced and easy to drink. Nict lightly roasted coffee.

It is exceptional. Man o man, these guys can make the beer. Very similar to the Hell & Damnation but a tad thiner and has the carbonation; a little easier to like. Aroma is rich: coffee cocoa roast malt. Flavor's like aroma, extremely well balanced. Finish is like flavor, tapering and of medium to long. Session beer despite the strength. World classic.

*1.094-1.020, 34.7 EBU, EBC Colour 194.7, 9.99% ABV.
*Brewed on 17Jan08, Bottled on 21Feb08.

Served at just above cellar temp (I've had it there for only a few months) into an impy pint, SSS is a hazy dark, bright garnet with a creamy tan head with long last that leaves light, foamy lace. Another one of these paler dark beers from DeMolen, again in this case, I really have no idea how historically accurate it is, but I dig the ruby glow. Think brown porter.

Smell is muted but pleasant, herbal hops and a bit of roasted malt.

Taste is pretty good, smooth, for such a big stout it's not that robust. The alcohol provides a drying, bitter note, accentuated by the bittering hops and roasted malt, but otherwise, it's got a dusty cocoa flavor that is abruptly cut by the fusels that linger on the finish. There's also a pretty strong leafy, herbal hop flavor, some caramel and milk chocolate.

Mouthfeel is full of creamy carbonation, not to heavy for the size, but yeasty and a bit solvent like.

Drinkability is pretty good, but it wasn't my favorite DeMolen. Being an expensive one-off, I'm sure it's one and done, even if I'm glad I got to try it. I enjoyed the historical underpinning, but wish they had provided more back-story.

Nice revisit to an old porter recipe, smooth and quaffable.

Presentation: 750 ml corked and caged brown bottle. Standard De Molen Label, text over white background detailing the characteristics of the brew such as bittering hops, EBU's (84.5), OG (1090), bottle number (314 out of 616), which will be good for five years from the bottling date (23 May 2008). Notes 9.99% Alc. by Vol. Served in a tulip glass.

A - Very dark brown pour with a fair head, moderate retention and surface memory, and some touches of lacing.

S - Good nose with roasted malts. Touches of coffee and a hint of chocolate.

T - Taste flows accordingly with dexterity an quite a composed sense: roasted malts, coffee, the touch of chocolate, a minimal fruitiness around the bitter finish.

M - Medium body and carbonation. Fairly smooth with the alcohol very well integrated and balanced.

O - Nicely quaffable and with a good flow.

Notes: Nice historic exercise. Maybe not too exciting but what Pattinson and Menno do here is rather welcome. Quality offering and a stimulating insight into vintage brewing.

750mL bottle poured into snifter - thanks to CarolinaKevin

Pours a browned color with some brighter almost reddish hues in the light. A layer of opaque head rests on top and retains well, leaving patchy lacing on the glass.

Cocoa powder and chocolate in the nose with some roasted malt tones. A touch of alcohol warmth with hints of dark fruit and burnt sugar. Slight mustiness as well.

Touch of hops up front, quickly swept away by some layers of malts. Roasted and warm with cocoa and dark chocolate. Almost a touch of Belgian-like yeast, which was a bit odd, but seemed to work somewhat. Warming booze towards the finish with some residual sweetness.

Fuller medium body, decent carbonation, pretty smooth and chewy on the palate. Not bad, but probably not worth the price point, and I had a hard time picking up on some of the flavors.

A-pours a jet black liquid with a thinner light tan colored head.

S-notes of dark chocolate with a fair bit of slightly burnt coffee, sweet malts in back with notes of plums and dark cherries.

T-dark chocolate, hints of vanilla up front, ashy coffee, slightly burnt and bitter, malt sweetness with plums and dark cherries.

M-silky smooth and soft on the palate, medium body, slightly less than I would have enjoyed, with light carbonation but holds.

D-not the most fantastic stout, lacks balance in flavor and complexity but doesn't do anything wrong. that ashy bitter coffee flavor is something I find in a lot of foreign made stouts such as mikeller and I'm not a huge fan.

Bottled 9/15/2010. Almost exactly 3 years old.

A: Bottle doesn't explode when the cork is popped but the bubbles build very slowly inside the bottle. After making my pour of a full snifter, 10 minutes later it was foaming out of the bottle. Very unusual, it continues to foam over even when the bottle is half empty. Pours a very dark brown but not quite black. Very large and very thick, fluffy light brown head. Head fades slowly with absolutely zero sign of lacing. Great retention however, especially since it seems capable of generating its own head without even touching the bottle or glass.

S: Nice mellow burnt malts. Roasted coffee. Fairly sweet and creamy, almost a caramel-like sweetness to it in fact. Hints of sweet milk chocolate.

T: Nice roasted coffee up front with a sweet milk chocolate backing. Some chalky char in the middle leading into bittersweet chocolate in the finish. Fairly dry finish in fact, one of the driest 10% stouts ever, IMO. Lingering charry flavor between sips, distinctive of de molen stouts.

M: Medium bodied, smooth but a little thin for almost 10%.

O: Not a bad FES. Age has mellowed and smooth it out but it still has a prominent and sharp char character. Can't imagine how strong it was 3 years ago. Alcohol is completely hidden, drinks like a 6-7% porter not a 10% stout. Nice drinkability as a result. Good beer, lacking a bit in complexity but I enjoyed it.

Clear yet dark brown body topped with a rich, creamy tan head. Roasted grains, slightly toasty; baking chocolate in the aroma. Lightly charred grain flavor, bitterness sneaking in midway and lingering in the finish, slight alcohol warmth; slight sourness. Medium-light bodied; clean with lingering sugar residuals.

A great looking stout; great roasted scents. I was somewhat surprised at the relative lightness to the body. The rich, dark malted character dominates the initial taste, giving away to a nice hop bitterness (and, perhaps, grain huskiness or tannin note) and a faint hint at the relatively high ABV.

2008 bottle #461 poured into a tulip.

Pours a dark brown out of the glass and sits a bit lighter than I would expect in a stout of this size, showing a deep copper when held up to light.

The aroma is pretty good, with lots of dark roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate and some coffee. There are hints of lactose and oats as well.

The taste is slightly different with a fruit character that I didn't get in the aroma. It has a slightly metallic-like aftertaste that's not too pleasant. The chocolate becomes much more powdery with a deeply roasted malt backbone.

The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with good carbonation and is extremely dry in the finish.

As an export stout, this one is decent, but it doesn't really hold up to the majority of impy stouts out there at the same ABV.

Label reads "Original 1914 recipe London Triple Stout."

APPEARANCE: Clear brown pour makes a three finger, medium-thin, looser, crackly, light brown head with pretty good retention. Clear dark brown body, almost black, with medium carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a good foam cap that remains until the end and leaves some decent splotchy lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Roasted malts, smoky notes with cocoa powder. Classic De Molen nose. Bold enough, with earthy peat aromas as well and some nice milk chocolate under everything. Good stuff.

TASTE: Roasted and smoky malts with a burst of cocoa powder and hop bitterness. Some milk chocolate and licorice with some nice peat flavors as well, moving into a bold and lingering bitter hop finish. Earthy hops with just a touch of booze, roasted malts and some cocoa powder linger nicely on the palate. Tasty stuff.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Pretty light on the palate, semi- creamy, and goes down smooth with a little burn after the swallow. Finishes slightly dry on the palate.

OVERALL: Another good De Molen brew. This is kind of a touchstone for their stout beer, as it is a tasty and aromatic beer, but would need a heavier, thicker palate to really get the flavors over the hump. A tighter head would also help the scores. That said, I enjoyed this one very much. If you’re interested in the brewery, this would be a stout to check out. If you enjoy it, then their barrel aged and smaller batch stuff would be well worth tracking down. A good beer that I’ve had before and will have again. Recommended.

Review from notes during our blind tasting. Thanks to Bob for bringing this. Been wanting to try this for a while and was quite a surprise when unveiled.

Poured dark brown, probably a dark chocolate brown with an egg nog colored head that was rather scant. It wasn't murky but definitely not clear. Nose is booming with alcohol. Very little else, maybe a hint of roast and some dark chocolate. Let's let this sit and warm up for a bit.

Ah yes, there we are. We served it too cold. Now I'm gathering much more complexity. The aforementioned chocolate gives a nice cocoa sweetness followed by a burnt toast flavor. Then the ash. Oh man this is an ashy beer. And the alcohol is still quite prominent. It's a bit harsh and the very light body doesn't really help IMO. It's a two dimensional beer: a couple of flavors + alcohol. Good, but not great.

2008 Vintage. Bottle number 10 of 616

Pours dark brown, settles virtually black. Tan head of a couple fingers adorns. Aroma is rich malts, roasted malts, bitter chocolate and dry cocoa powder. Slight yeast esters and maybe some stale hop notes. Taste is much more chocolate and cocoa, or even a bakers chocolate. Rather roasted and toasty. Some yeast esters and a hint of oxidation. Feel is near full, with a bit elevated carbonation, but a creamy, dry finish.

May be better fresh. Not sure I would age one the full 5 years it claims.
