This is an 11oz bottle. It pours a nice medium bodied chocolate brown in color with only a very slight lacing. The aromas are odd. You get a lot of powdery chocolate malt with a strange funk to it. The more I think about it, the more I detect gym socks. That's a no no. Oddly enough it's not as off putting as it sounds or as it could be. Theflavors consist ofa ton of chocolate malt, roasted malt, light coffee, chocolate bar sweetness, and slight alcohol. It's solid and the favors work well together. It drinks really light in body, kind of thin and watery. It's definitely the lightest imperial stout I've had yet. It needs to be more viscous. This definitely hurts the appeal of this beer. I don't see how it could be aged for 25 years being as thin as it is. Overall this is an odd beer. The nose is questionable, the favors are solid, but the body isn't up to par for the style.

A: Black with a big foamy milk chocolate head

S: Rich chocolate, coffee, earth.

T: Dark chocolate, deep roasted coffee, wet earth and must with a bit of burnt bitterness that lingers in the finish.

M: Smooth, creamy but a bit thin, low carbonation

O: I'm a bit disappointed in this one, the musty burnt flavors take away from it. Not worth the high price for me.

Hell and damnation from notes. Split with my brother in law

Zero pop as the cork is removed.

A- Syrupy, thick cola pour, zero head, zero. lacing. Huge white chunks sitting at the bottom.

S- Chocolate, booze, coffee, brown sugar and vanilla.

T- Chocolate and coffee with sweet fark fruits. Definitely smells and tastes much better than it looks.

M- Flat and full bodied, sticky on the lips.

O- I read a lot of reviews on this and they are mostly positive. Bad bottle/poorly stored? Who know. Expected more I guess.

12oz bottle, #661 of a batch brewed in '09 and bottled in '10, into a Birra del Borgo tulip. Big thanks to Dan for sharing this one.

A: After the wax is cut away the cap pops with the absolute loudest sound I've ever heard come from a non-corked beer's opening, and a slow upwelling of foam begins to overflow into a hastily-provided glass. Once actual beer starts coming out, it's visibly chunky with particulates; every pour from first to last comes complete with a host of solid matter. My particular pour has a dark-brown body playing host to a galaxy of black particulates, topped by a soapy head that quickly recedes to a spotty ring. Foul.

S: Huge, crazy mix of smoke and raw chocolate. Some hops and caramel as well. Intense, and hugely enjoyable. The chocolate alone is just stunning.

T: Spicy, strong, smoky and chocolatey. Less great than the nose, but still enjoyable in small sips.

M: The chunks carry over here, and just highlight the boozy sharpness of the flavor with a bit of gritty three-dimensionality. Laughably bad.

O: The bottle says this one can sit for 25 years, and I think at least a handful would be necessary just to get all the crap to come out of suspension. The aromas and flavors are big and enjoyable, but this is a seriously flawed beer right now. I can certainly see its potential, though, and can't wait to try the Misto version that's on-deck.

12oz bottle. 2010 vintage.

A: Opens with a substantial hiss and the pour yields a really aggressive mocha head. The way it explodes reminds me of an infected beer, but fortunately this isn't being murdered by yeast. Very deep black.

N: Lots of whisky, chocolate, metal. Brandy and raisins. Vanilla. Plenty of brown sugar, burnt caramel, coffee, and peanuts. Plenty of smoke.

T: Acrid smoke, burnt caramel, intense oak. Can be somewhat astringent and it varies behind really harsh and tasty. However, the end of this is really, really, bad as all the yeast settled to the bottom.

M: Very well carbonated and the mouthfeel seems somewhat thin. Dry and acrid. Lack of alcohol.

O: All over the place. Complex, smokey, then very flawed and astringent. Don't think I'd buy this again.

De Molen bottled 05 November, 2010. Bottle served into Norrebro Bryghus stemware glass in me friend's gaff in Copenhagen, Denmark. Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours a half finger head of white colour with nice cream lacing and thickness. Retention is laughably bad. De Molen seems to have a sort of anti-carbonation philosophy on brewing. Colour is a solid brown-black. Nontransparent. Appealing. I do wish the head was better.

Sm: Heavy chocolate, toffee, caramel, and cream. Me broken nose can't distinguish much else; all apologies, lads.

T: The caramel and chocolate hit you smack in the jaw, right from the open on. No cream in the open, but certainly some buried undertones in the body. Not as nutty as expected, but the notes are present. The toffee is a bit corrupted by the chocolate. The chocolate overstays its welcome, continuing strongly through the finish; it'd be better if it faded on the finish to encourage the next sip. No alcohol or yeast comes through. It's complex but structurally brief; there's little time to enjoy all of the flavours fully. It's built well, but the balance is a bit troublesome on account of the dominant chocolate.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Far too thick, however. It's obscenely thick and filling - as thick as you can go without getting syrupy methinks. It's unwarranted, and doesn't complement the flavours of the body. What happened to subtlety?

Dr: I prefer the other versions of this beer that are aged, but this one is worth trying. It's more a sipper, and it's thickness distracts from the character of the taste. It's hard to drink; I wouldn't want more than one. I doubt I'll have it again.

Young 375ml bottle (bottled 4/11/11) poured into Portsmouth snifter.

A: Pours black with a few soapy bubbles for a head. Not much in the way of lace as well. I guess I should be glad I didn’t get a gusher bottle like some of the other reviewers, but some kind of head would have been nice.
S: Crazy strong notes of roasted malt, toasted dark grains, deep dark chocolate and volatile alcohol. I get a hint of vanilla and burnt wood as well.
T: Flavors from the nose are present and they definitely lean towards char, peat, burnt wood, earth, and tobacco. I get sweeter notes of caramel and vanilla in the finish, and the aftertaste is lightly bitter with rich dark chocolate, but this is one roasted and toasted beer.
M: Very low carbonation that makes the mouthfeel very slick and watery. The body is thankfully fairly thick, but really this feels like drinking heavy water.
O: Obviously I didn’t get a bottle with any bubbles so the mouthfeel definitely suffered. The flavors were also fairly complex but had a char/roasted/earth theme. Overall a pretty solid imperial stout; perhaps some age would make it better.

Bottled 2/29/2012, 330 ml bottle into an oversize wine glass.

A - Pitch black body. A large three finger mocha head formed initially. Settles down to a thin cap with edging. Excellent lacing and retention with small and tight bubbled, leaves behind an alcoholic film.

S - Nice blend of roast and sweetness. Some milk chocolate, vanilla, liquorice and coffee. Has an odd almost savory burnt plastic like finish though.

T - Much better than the aroma. Roasty malts, bitter espresso beans, and milk chocolate. Subtle dark fruits and liquorice on the finish which give it that unique RIS taste. Some warming alcohol on the end. Mouth feel is between thin and medium with low carbonation. Despite the thinness it comes off sort of sticky and syrupy.

O - A nice RIS. Didn't blow me away but its very simple and well put together. I don't really see the point in aging this one though, its drinking pretty great fresh.

Pours pitch black. Huge brown head. Web like lacings all the way to the finish.

I get mostly dark chocolate and alcohol on the nose.

Wowza. Big hit of alcohol right up front. Followed by dry dark chocolate and some well roasted coffee beans. Boozy throughout, like a triple Irish coffee. Finished with a bit of alcohol soaked fruit. Can't analyze for too long or it burns your tongue off.

Mouthfeel and strength aren't working well for me, quite harsh.

Bottled a few months ago, definitely needs a few years on it. Might turn out pretty tasty.

Tasted at the Rare Beer Tasting at Max's during Baltimore Beer Week.

The pours a blackish brown color with virtually no head retention or lacing. The beer was not entirely still; I just think it had seen some serious barrel aging. The nose is intense, but I can't say the aroma pleased me very much. Licorise predominated, along with an underlying woodiness, black tar and coffee. A little bit of licorise is something I tend to like in my impy stouts, but this is just over the top. Flavors replicate the nose pretty closely, except there is considerable sweetness to it. The sweetness helps to counter the licorise somewhat, but I still find it nearly overwhelming. The beer has a fairly smooth mouthfeel, but the licorise, sweetness and high alcohol make drinking this beer an absolute chore.

This beer reminds me very much of the Mikkeller Black, which is not a good thing at all. So clearly this beer is just not my cup of tea. Oh well.

330 mL bottle from 2011, served in a tulip at Lord Hobo. Reviewed from notes.

It pours like a spirit, or maybe iced coffee. The body is black, pure and impenetrable. Not even a wisp of a head on this one. Some legs down the side of my glass, but this isn't really a looker.

The aroma is huge. Prunes and other dark fruits some through in abundance. Lots of molasses, with a rich sugary sweetness. There's a sweet toffee aroma that really reminds me of an English barleywine. Plenty of alcohol phenols with a nostril hair-burning heat detracts from the overall package.

The taste is similarly barleywine-esque, but far less brash than the aroma. Prunes, plums and other dark fruits come through, but chocolate is the predominant source of sweetness. It's quite smoky and roasted, and there's a prevalent bitterness throughout. This is far less sweet than most American Russian Imperial Stouts.

I didn't expect much carbonation after watching this beer pour out of the bottle, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. This is basically dead, flat and borderline lifeless. It's very thick and full, lush and chewy, but just a little bit of carbonation would really help.

A more drinkable mouthfeel would elevate this beer significantly in my view. The taste and aroma are very good and this is drinking well, even though it's rather young. With just a little bit of added carbonation, this balanced stout would be a real winner for me.

Pours a dark brown with red under tones. No head at all, I was actually able to count the bubbles, there were 18 on them. A boozy, coffee aroma. Taste was not the expected coffee and chocolate, what I got was vanilla and alcohol; and sickly sweet. Hell and Damnation did not improve as it warmed either. Feel was fairly thick but zero carbonation (and carbo might have helped). Drinkability was average, only if you have a sweet tooth. Overall, I am extremely disappointed. For a highly rated (and reading the reviews it seems like 3 or 4 different beers are being rated), and high priced beer, this is over sweet, under flavored and carbonated, and in general, an inadequate beer.
