poured into an Elysian pumpkin fest baby snifter. Had this side by side with the barrel aged version.
A: pours a deep rich black with some dark brown lacing, a little bit of carbonation is apparent in the pour.
S: lots of smokey peaty malt, like nothing i have ever smelled in a beer before.
T: peat peat and more peat. its good but overwhelming and there is a bit of a rauchbier flavor to this beer simply from all the peaty malt that was used.
M: very nice mouthfeel with the alcohol very well integrated just the right amount of carbonation.
overall very good though I enjoyed the barrel aged version more. It is a very interesting beer and definitely worth trying once.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a dark brown hue with a thin mocha head that fades to leave light wisps.
S - Aromas of peaty smoke, caramel, chocolate, really rich peat. The smoke is not oppressive at all.
T - Taste is similar to the nose with loads of peat, some smoke caramel, the bottle almost comes across as maybe over attenuated. Really decent.
M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, bit thin.
O - Overall this beer was rather tasty, nice smoke. Solid.

A : light dark brown head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Black color.
A: complex smoke, wood, chocolate, roasted malt and liquorish.
T: Quite strong and balanced taste. Full bodied with a soft carbonation and dry light alcoholic texture. Moderated to heavy sweet and mild bitter flavor. Lingering smoke and sweet liquorish like finish.
M : smooth and creamy
D: alcohol is present but soft , soft carbonation , very drinkable

Poured from a 330ml bottle. Pours a deep black with big brownish head. The smell --smoky, meaty, peaty -- is the first giveaway that this is an exceptional beer. It was brewed with heavily peat-smoked malt , which gives it a really robust flavour, as well. It's all about smoked meat, molasses, peat and big Scotch flavours. But they are so well integrated and go together so nicely that you can truly sip this like a fine single malt.

S: Oof. Big peated malt aroma. Some burnt bacon grease, cigar ash, espresso and campfire. Can't say I've ever smelled a beer like this, but I kind of like it.
T: A lot of charred malt with some peat and smokiness to it. Some dark chocolate with a faint trace of fudge, and baking chocolate with some almonds. Really complex and pretty tasty. Not a beginner's stout.

A: On-tap at Against the Grain Brewery & Smokehouse. Pours a jet black with a thick, imposing tan head that takes several minutes to settle.
S: Aromas of peat, prunes, raisins, roasted grain, dark chocolate, and coffee assault the nose. This is obviously not going to be a subtle stout.
T: Notes of roasted grain, burnt toast, dark chocolate, fudge, prunes, raisins, dried black cherry, black currants, coffee, vanilla bean, peat, leather, and earthy, minty, tobacco-tinged hops wash across the palate. The finish is heavy and rich with an odd, but pleasing, combination of peat, chocolate, prune, raisin, and coffee flavors. Some slight earthy hop notes linger in the background.
M: Very full-bodied, chewy, firm, and dry. A little chalky in the mouth. Carbonation is relatively crisp for the style. Alcohol presence is very pronounced, with what can only be described as something of a sucker punch on the tail. Will make you sleepy in no time.
O: This is a very robust stout with a hugely complex flavor profile. I can see why it is regarded so highly overseas. Very nice. Would make a good evening sipper.

Malty complexity is astounding. I'm very impressed. Little alcohol comes through, though there may be hints of yeast.
Mf: Smooth and wet, but coarse and thick enough to support and coax out the flavours of the body. Impressive.
Dr: Very drinkable - dangerously so at this ABV. Marvellously constructed and very fairly priced (at least at De Molen). Worth a try for anyone who loves beer. One of the best beers I've had so far from De Molen. Wow.

Appearance: Pours nearly pitch black with a moderate amount of carbonation. Huge tan head that takes up half of the glass before slowly fading to a thinner creamy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.
Smell: A big dark aroma that is very smoke and peat driven. Dark roasted malts with a strong scent of smoke and peat. Hints of dark bitter chocolate, coffee, burnt toast, caramel, toffee, biscuit, and yeast. Big hints of molasses and anise licorice spicing. Subtle hints of dark raisin, fig, cherry, and prune. Light hints of earthy and grassy hops. The smoked malt, peat, and chocolate stand out the most.
Taste: Follows the nose with a dark malty taste driven by smoke and peat. Dark roasted malts with a big taste of smoke and peat along with good notes of dark chocolate, coffee, toast, burnt caramel, toffee, yeast, grains, and biscuit. Sweet taste of molasses. Licorice taste from some anise. Undertones of dark dried fruit with notes of dark cherry, raisin, prune, and fig. Very subtle earthy hop presence. A very good smoked and peated malt taste.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Very creamy and smooth. Kind of thin for an imperial stout. Alcohol heat is light.
Overall: A really good smoky stout. It may lack a little in body, but the dark smoke and peat flavors are really good.

Deep, dark brown body with an extremely rich, thick head. Roasted grain, a hint of peat, espresso, molasses, and caramel swirl about in the aroma. Deep, chocolate flavor initially that seems to get spoiled by a phenolic, band-aid-like undertone that takes over at the end. In between, there are some good hints of roasted, smokey grains and a rather sharp bitterness. A strong, boozy alcohol presence mixes in with the other off-putting flavors. Very smooth, medium-heavy body with a dry finish.

Perhaps its the peated barley malts that are at the crux of what I consider off-putting flavors for me. Others may really like that component, it's just not for me. Still, I find enough good things with the beer, so it's not necessarily a bad experience overall, just different.

2013 vintage from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow:
Strong stuff from De Molen here, this one was a very aggressive & almost overpowering imperial stout that was very malty, coming through with plenty of earthy flavours & a lot of peat. The dark malts show the show here with a little vanilla & sugar backing them up but everything end up being just a bit too strong for my liking & the balance wasn't the best either. It remained very much a drinkable beer that got better the longer it had to open up & develop but sadly I can't see it being one that I'd go for again; perhaps if I enjoyed my whiskies a little more than I'd have appreciated this one better.

Strong stuff from De Molen here, this one was a very aggressive & almost overpowering imperial stout that was very malty, coming through with plenty of earthy flavours & a lot of peat. The dark malts show the show here with a little vanilla & sugar backing them up but everything end up being just a bit too strong for my liking & the balance wasn't the best either. It remained very much a drinkable beer that got better the longer it had to open up & develop but sadly I can't see it being one that I'd go for again; perhaps if I enjoyed my whiskies a little more than I'd have appreciated this one better.
