Served in a chalice glass right from the bottle right here at Cerveceria Esparte in Conil, Spain.

Appearance: Thin black colored body with medium to heavy bubbles. Tan head is straight tan which comes off extra bubbly.

Smell: BBQ meat with tones of coffee bean. Sounds awkward but I'm not making it up.

Taste: Wow this brew is all over the place. Smoked bacon covered with coffee and dark chocolate. Malty as it can get but full confusion to the palates.

Mouth: Full bodied with medium carbonation. The smoked after taste hovers the cheeks.

Overall: Tough to love but also told go to dislike, my wife didn't like it but this brew has potential. If you're a carnivore like myself you would greatly appreciate it. Always in a glass my friend. Salud!

33cl bottle. Dark brown pour with a thin beige head. Smells of dark cherries, chocolate, roasted malts, smoke, bourbon, cocoa, caramel and dark berries. The taste is well balanced, with notes of roasted malts, peat, cherries, chocolate, some coffee and whiskey. Very nice balance, all the notes are kind of mellow and toned down.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a dark brown hue with a thin mocha head that fades to leave light wisps.

S - Aromas of peaty smoke, caramel, chocolate, really rich peat. The smoke is not oppressive at all.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with loads of peat, some smoke caramel, the bottle almost comes across as maybe over attenuated. Really decent.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, bit thin.

O - Overall this beer was rather tasty, nice smoke. Solid.

Big foamy thick head fades at a fair pace, mild bubbly lacing, super dark pitch black beer.

Nose big smoke, tons of Islay peat smoke, big scotch, plenty of roasted malt, iodine smoke, candy syrup toffee.

Taste big smoke, peat smoke and iodine, little medicinal, with chocolate background, creamy cocoa, bitter roast and char, little spicy hops, Smokey scotch, candy notes and yeasty phenol touch. Finish sticky but dry, bitter earthy hops, more Smokey peat and iodine.

Mouth is med to heavier bod, big fluffy carb.

De Molen mentions "Bruichladdich" malt on the label,so it was probably for their "Octomore" smoke monsters.I enjoy peated Scotch, but the burned plastic taste is just too prominent here and makes it hard to drink.

- 11.2oz. bottle poured into Lost Abbey Teku on 9-Oct-15

Surprised at how much carbonation there still was. I had about 1.5-2 inches of head. It's too carbonated for the style. It had a bit of Belgian yeast sweetness to it, but not sure if they used Belgian yeast in it. Nice roast and malt profile, typical of an RIS. Based on this experience, this beer hasn't peaked yet. Overall, a good example of the style.

Pours opaque black with 1-finger tan head, rather low retention. Smell - peat, char, roasted . Taste - peated malts, oak, prunes, coffee. Chewy, oily body. Alcohol is hidden. Delicious.

A- Two bottles poured into many glasses with a black body. Foamy and frothy one finger head with good retention. Large blanket remains and the edges become coated in massively thick sheets of lace.

S- Scotch from a certain island called Islay. Super smoky, seaweed saltiness, charred grains, toastiness and a tart feeling brought upon by the heavily smoked malts.

T- Peat and peat. Smoky seaweed saltiness, spiced burnt sugar coated raisins, chocolate and burnt barley, Islay scotch whiskey from the malts, toasted nuts, malted milkballs and a moderate sweetness.

MF- Thick but the alcohol makes it a bit thinner and somewhat slick. Consistency is oily and fairly crisp, frothy. Finishes with a bit of warmth but ABV is seriously invisible. Bitter cocoa.

Peat Islay Scotch and heavily roast tones from the malts; a serious smoke monster like the one that faced Mr. Eko. De Molen is always great to try. Keep it up over there with these beats.

Bottle States 10.00%. 2011 Vintage.

Pours a dark brown color with ruby highlights. The aroma has big peat smoked malt and also dark fruits. It breathes like a good whiskey. Big roasted malts in the taste, certainly some peat and earthy wood. The roasted, coal like goodness is complex and addictive. Character abounds from Hemel & Aarde, this is a Russian Imperial Stout from the Netherlands that is worthy of seeking out. Full bodied, lush, well carbonated. A pleasure and a real treat. Delicious stuff right here, I love the roasted and slightly smokey flavor.

This is a very peaty stout. Classified as a Russian Imperial, but it sure reminds me of Scotland. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Nice head and lacing; very dark. Aroma is smoky, and the peat dominates the taste.

The flavor is very strong. My 8 ounce pour (on tap) was almost more than I wanted.

Not your everyday stout, that's for sure, but it's a great change of pace.

Vintage 12/5/11

A - Pitch black with an off white, soapy looking, thick ring of lacing, gentle carbonation through
the middle.

S - Smoke, charcoal, faint dark roasted chocolate.

T - Well balanced throughout, smoky char, charcoal, dark roasted chocolate, oak, peat, and
light coffee.

M - Medium body, gentle carbonation and silky soapy bubble finish on the back of the palate.

O - A fantastic beer that will age for a long, long, time.

330ml / 10% alcohol / bottle date is partial but looks to be from March 2013.

Appearance - Pour into a snifter is blackblackblack with a surprisingly voluminous tan head. Great retention but not much lace.

Smell - Intense peat and salty scotch-like smokiness first and foremost with very minimal roast, char and dark chocolate. Some earthy tones. Having some Rex Attitude flashbacks...

Taste - Definitely more balanced and generally stout-like. Burnt chocolate, caramel, coffee w/cream, dark fruit, and nutty malts coming out while still maintaining a good amount of peat and smoke. Some hop bitterness there. Coffee ground finish. A pretty harmonious balance as it starts to warm, certainly trumps the nose in that aspect.

Mouthfeel - What it lacks in heftiness, it makes up for in velvety smoothness with easy-going medium level carbonation. Alcohol is very well hidden.

Overall - Ultimately I think the Scotch-smoke is a little overkill here, moreso in the scent. Either way the taste/mouthfeel is great though. Complex flavor, well-hidden alcohol, smooth, nice balance.

On tap @ Monk's Cafe Mad Monday

A- pours pitch black with a creamy off-white colored head that leaves lots of good lace behind. Smells of smoky peat moss, woodsy & earthy, chocolate and fresh band-aide. Taste is smoky peat with woodsy notes, sweet chocolate & smoked meat with a dry smoky finish. Medium carbonation and body with s upper smooth and creamy mouthfeel and finish. The peat moss works well with the base beer, as it does not overpower and mixes in some nice woodsy notes as well. Definitely not for everyone, but worth the try.

S: Peat, roasted malt and maybe cream in the nose.

T: Big smokey peat notes, bready notes, roasty notes, coffee, nice bitter coffee in the aftertaste. No noticeable hint of alcohol.

M: Mouthfeel is full bodied and fairly smooth.

O: This beer is a more-than-solid example of the style. It's delicious.

At 10%abv., coming in a slim 330ml brown bottle; bottling date 03/05/2012, served mildly chilled in a long-stemmed wine goblet. Notes: the beer label specifies the ingredients to include water, munich, cara, brown, bruichladdish barley malts, premiant and sladek (late hopping) and yeast.

A: pitch black in colour, coming with a 1cm thick creamy dark khaki frothy head with very good retention, on top of rather mild carbonation.
S: the dense and oily aroma upfront is dominated 50-50 by the peated malts and savoury-sweet black prune-ish notes; given a good swirl, the pronounced peatiness mixes well with bitter cocoa, gristy black beans, vanilla, plummy fruit esters, black cherry skins, and bitter-sweet root herbs as of licorice. Complex, but also strangely the aroma is uplifted by the lovely peaty edge of the malts.
T: smooth in carbonation, the foretaste is slightly metallic, savoury-sweet and robustly peated-malty, delivering lots of smoky and deep-roasted aroma alongside smoked longan-fruits, black prunes, licorice roots and bitter chocolate syrup, followed by a dry tinge of herbal bitterness as well as a thick body of lubricating Munich and brown malts with an aromatic bready touch. The bitterness retains its intensity towards the finish, where the peated-malt and smoked prune-ish aroma lingers with excellent earthy undertones to elevate an otherwise potentially heavy aftertaste.
M&O: the mouthfeel is excellent, lubricating and soothingly carbonated at the same time, while the fulsome body doesn’t go quite heavy at all. This is a successful, robust and yet very approachable Russian Imperial Stout that drinks so well alone, but can also benefit from different types of barrel-ageing. Highly recommended.

11.2 oz bottle into a New Belgium goblet. 12/2011 bottle date, and it says 10% ABV.

A: Pours an extremely dark brown color. The head is a three finger tan shade with large, aggressive-forming bubbles. It settles down into a thin film after a while, leaving decent streaks of lacing on the glass. This one seems to be strongly carbonated - it almost tried to spill out of the bottle.

S: Wow, the aroma features plenty of chocolate at first. I'm really impressed with how strongly it emanates from the glass, too. As it warms up, this is quickly replaced by notes of peat. This quality is somewhat offputting in my opinion - aside from the ham-like smoke, I pick up notes like algae, rubber, plastic, and even electrical fire. It starts off great and ends up falling on its face, so I'll average it out here.

T: An improvement over the aroma. The peat-laden smoke clusters on the opening, lacking some of the unpleasantries on the nose; it's more of a general hammy/woody tone with a mossy backing. This fades into a midtaste of both licorice and dark chocolate. (in addendum, the licorice qualities here don't bother me...maybe it just bothers me in Stone's IRS, I don't know) The finish is laden with textbook roasted malt dryness, char, seaweed, and perhaps a faint touch of stewed dark fruits. It's definitely peaty throughout; if you don't like seaweed and moss in your imperial stout, you will NOT like this. On the positive side, it doesn't drown out the other notes - in fact, it's solidly complex at the end of the day.

M: I was right, this is strongly carbonated and airy in its feel. Dry, too. In spite of that, it does have a substantial heft on the palate - still, it's too lively on the tongue for a RIS. This becomes a better brew in all palate aspects once the carbonation calms down.

O: Rather unusual. The flavor profile is great, but the aroma is inconsistent and the feel is more in line with a BSDA (not unexpected given its country of origin). Having said that, once I got used to the bold peatiness, I did grow to like it quite a bit. Even at $8 a bottle, I'd entertain the notion of buying this again. Probably not often, though.

Dec. 5 2011 on the shelton brothers label on the back, not sure what the date means.

Pours an absolutely gorgeous jet black with 2 fingers of small bubbled light tan head.

Lots going on in the nose. Smokey, chocolatey, woodsy and lots of roasted grains.

Taste is more of the same. Smoke definitely dominates but isn't totally overpowering. Just a touch of alcohol warmth, exactly what you want in a RIS.

Mouthfeel is very smooth and ever so slightly creamy. Definitely a sipper but relatively easy drinking for the ABV (my bottle said 10%)

Overall this is a solid RIS, especially if you like a touch of smoke. Glad I picked it up, might get another one at some point to try with a bit more age on it.

Pours a thin black or dark brown with light edges and a huge foamy khaki-colored head. Smells of phenolic smoke immediately reminding me of peat smoke. Bit of a peppered beef jerky aroma underneath. As it warms, and I acclimate to the smokiness, campfire-roasted marshmallows and milk chocolate notes emerges. Flavor is not so intense as the nose would suggest. There is a roasty, yet smooth maltiness, almost a bit chewy that stands up to the spicy peat. I can pick up hints of things like tootsie roll-like chocolate, caramel and dark chocolate pot de crème, but the peat smoke is still the dominant note. The peat does not, however, overpower this hefty brew overall.

Poured from a 11.2 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. Date on bottle reads Dec 5th, 2011.

Appearance: Pours nearly pitch black with a moderate amount of carbonation. Huge tan head that takes up half of the glass before slowly fading to a thinner creamy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: A big dark aroma that is very smoke and peat driven. Dark roasted malts with a strong scent of smoke and peat. Hints of dark bitter chocolate, coffee, burnt toast, caramel, toffee, biscuit, and yeast. Big hints of molasses and anise licorice spicing. Subtle hints of dark raisin, fig, cherry, and prune. Light hints of earthy and grassy hops. The smoked malt, peat, and chocolate stand out the most.

Taste: Follows the nose with a dark malty taste driven by smoke and peat. Dark roasted malts with a big taste of smoke and peat along with good notes of dark chocolate, coffee, toast, burnt caramel, toffee, yeast, grains, and biscuit. Sweet taste of molasses. Licorice taste from some anise. Undertones of dark dried fruit with notes of dark cherry, raisin, prune, and fig. Very subtle earthy hop presence. A very good smoked and peated malt taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Very creamy and smooth. Kind of thin for an imperial stout. Alcohol heat is light.

Overall: A really good smoky stout. It may lack a little in body, but the dark smoke and peat flavors are really good.

Appearance. Pours a deep dark brown, black in the glass with two fingers of tan head.

Smell. Smokey peat and dark roasted malts, just a little molasses and maybe some dark fruits as well, but the smoke is pretty predominant.

Taste. Again very smokey and peaty with some tobacco and tar. There's also a bit of dark malt, molasses, and maybe a trace of dark fruit.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body, very light for the abv and it actually works well. Medium-strong carbonation.

Overall. A very interesting beer that doesn't really conform to any style. High abv, lighter body, smokey as hell, and some big stout characteristics ...very interesting indeed.

On-tap. Snifter glass. Enjoyed on jan´13. Black color, tan froth & fairly good retention crown. Coffee & fudge chocolate notes, roasted malt aroma & licorice candies to the nose. Roasted malt & pepper flavor, bitter/sweet mouthfeel. Medium to dense body. Moderate to low carbonation. Burnt chocolate & licorice touch are shown in a long finish. Dry coffe on the aftertaste. ABV well hidden.

Another solid beer from de Molen crew.

A very dark brown pour, almost black. The off brown/tan head rises to about 2 fingers in a snifter glass. Lacing is tight and slick.

Leather hits me first in the aroma. Dark chocolate and tannin. Black plum, raisin, dark fruit, prune perhaps

The leather is present in the flavors as well. Along with the black fruit, dried fruit and chocolate there is a roasted malt character going on. Something of a smokiness comes and sits in the background. Some tobacco comes in.

Very nice beer. It has a sharp, yet velvet finish. Nothing sweet. A real good stout!

2011 vintage (10% abv):

Absolutely gorgeous looking stout... cola brown to pitch black with mountains of medium brown froth that cling to the glass... quite the photo friendly beer this is.

Rich, earthy peat moss aromas explode from the glass. Fudge and brownies beneath that with a smooth sense of caramel and toffee as well. Very smooth given both the alcohol content and the headlining peat character. A touch of dry smoke but mainly just that dirty, grassy moss profile.

Bitter chocolate on the palate, rice hulls, big dry peat moss flavors from start to finish, the finish is incredibly pronounced - an arid moss bit, some drying alcohol and oily coffee beans... bitter. It's a slow drinker but delicious indeed.

I'd love to try a barrel aged variant someday.

Good all around - very nice pour, deep black with dark brown head that's a good size head for an imperial stout. Nose is intense and quite appetizing with clear peat smoke and a big roasty aroma. Caramel baked goods in there too, but the peat is quite prominent. On the palate there's a rich mixture of flavors ranging from dark caramel, peat, roasted grains, slightly burnt toast, and bitter chocolate. Very carbonated and tickles the palate nicely. Long peaty/roasty finish.
