Got this one at the De Molen beer shop in Bodegraven a while back. This is an old brew from 2009 but they'd held some back only to release them in 2014.
From a 33cl bottle into a snifter
Brewed 25 Feb 2009
Bottled 10 April 2009
OG: 1.150
FG: 1.040
EBC: 27.5
EBU: 62.8
Aged on toasted wood chips soaked in 40 yr cognac
APPEARANCE: Pours out still and yields a bubbly, off-white head. Clear rust or mahogany body with no carbonation evident. Looks flat but has a nice color.
SMELL: Red fruits, toffee, caramel, melon, floral notes with wood and a bit of spirit on the nose. Hints of leather as well. Bold enough and quite enticing.
TASTE: Red fruits, toffee, wood and cognac up front. Very smooth at this point. Sweet too, but balanced after the swallow. Bold finish of cognac, toffee, caramel, red fruits, some wood and leather as well. Very smooth and the booze is basically non-existent at this point. Great stuff.
PALATE: Totally still. Thick and syrupy, slick, goes down very smooth and finishes very sticky. A bit of heat lingers but nowhere near what you'd expect from the abv.
OVERALL: Delicious at this point. Very smooth and silky, with lots of lovely sweet malt and wood flavors. A little bit of carbonation would obviously help, but in this case, and in the case of the style, it's not a large issue. Really enjoyed this and wish they'd go back and use the old system for things like this every now and then. Recommended.

330 mL bottle. Murky deep orange. Smells of caramel malt. Oxidized with some sherry and oak. A little fruity. Tastes fruity too. Lots of oak. Raisins. Oxidized. Very sweet. Low carbonation. Heavy and sweet. I get no cognac, but it's still pretty good.

Bottle from Jeffo. Shared at Zwanze Day, in the appropriate taster glass. The one and only 2009 vintage.
A - Pours still. Transparent dark coppery amber body. Looks like a 6+ year-old barleywine.
S - The aroma is understated, although it picks up as the beer warms. A bit oxidized, but it melds well with the fruity, treacle malt backbone, and mellow oak flavors. Definitely on the English side of the barleywine spectrum, with the red fruit, raisins, marmalade, and port flavors. Wouldn't have guessed this was 16% - seemed more like 9-10%.
T - The taste was actually better, as the oxidation was less present. Picked up more cognac character here, although I'm always dubious about how much spirit flavor is actually imparting by soaked oak chips. In any case, very sweet, with toffee, berries, plum, and oaky vanilla, but never overwhelms or becomes cloying. Again, not much alcohol here.
M - It's pretty much devoid of carbonation, full in body, and fairly sticky. Not much alcohol heat, and while it lingers, it's not overly syrupy. Again, it's very English, and the stillness doesn't really offend that much.
D - I think this would have been even better a year or two ago, but it's holding up strong, just like Mooi & Machtig. Hopefully both are due to be made again, as Cognac barleywines seems to be one of Menno's strong suits.

Aroma is caramelly, melanoidin, sweet dates, and muted raisins.
Very sweet, but with a moderately bitter, dry finish. Huge raisin, date character, prunes.

Thanks to madmitch76, over on ratebeer, for this fine brew. Pours clear copper with off white head. The aroma is rich smooth prunes, peaches, ripe juicy plums, apples, semi sweet sherry notes, caramel candy some oak and orange hard candy. The taste is upsettingly smooth and wonderful (where have you been all my life?) and rich and complex. It offers up succulent notes of rich smooth blended dark fruitiness, ribbons of creamy caramel candy, smooth molasses covered oak and sweet citrus orange like hop flavor. Amazing!

Note: Aged with oak chips that have been soaked in 40 year old cognac.
A: Shiny copper color with no head - just some disparate airy bubbles that quickly fades away.
S: Raisins, lots of cognac, rum-soaked fruits (plums). Actually, here's quite a lot of fruits. Malty aromas of caramel. Quite a lot of alcohol as well, but the alcohol is nicely integrated and is reminiscent of fine spirits. Although the smell seems slightly muted due to the obvious lack of carbonation, it's still very impressive and powerful.
T: The taste is malty and very sweet. Lots of fruit here as well (grapes, plums, apples, raisins), but the fruity aromas are not as liqueur-like as in the smell. Notes of cognac, nuts, caramel and fudge. A hint of oak. Perhaps I pick up a hint of vanilla. The taste is not overly powerful, but very nice. The finish is mildly bitter with some leafy and spicy hop notes (more than expected), quite a lot of alcohol and lingering cognac flavors. The alcohol is impressively well hidden.
M: Full-bodied with a fat and chewy texture. No carbonation at all.
D: A very delightful and potent beer. Balanced. But some carbonation would have been nice. Definitely recommended.
