Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. This was beer No. 1100 that I have sampled. Label lists this as bottle 137.

Pours dark brown to black. The aroma is strong black coffee with some roasted malts. The flavor is more of the same with intense black coffee and roasted malts. Medium-thick mouthfeel and low carbonation.

33cl bottle. Dark ruby-brown pour with a very thin beige lacing. The smell is dominated by cold coffee and cocoa. Tastes like cold coffee, too - with some added notes of dark cherries, caramel and roasted malts. Smooth mouthfeel, flat, with a coffee bitter aftertaste.

330ml bottle, 11.6% ABV. "Malt & Mocha", maybe? If so, a decidedly less interesting thematic name this time around.

This beer pours a solid black, with slight basal cola highlights, and two fingers of puffy, thinly foamy beige head, which leaves some random streaky lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of sharp earthy, vegetal coffee beans, dry chocolate, wet ash, bready, crackery malt, acerbic yeast, and leafy, straw-like hops. The taste is like cold, bitter cafe au lait - cooled coffee and sour milk - bready, crusty malt, a touch of caramel, medium cocoa flakes, semi-sweet yeasty, indistinct fruit, and earthy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is sporadically lively in a mildly unexpected sense, the body a decently hefty medium weight, and fairly smooth amongst the remains of the day-old coffee. It finishes strangely on the sweet side, the cuppa joe, malt, and fruit growing a collective sugary additive bar.

A decent coffee-forward big stout, the titular malt playing a secondary role for the most part, at least as far as appearances go. Once again, for this tweaked (heh) style, the exorbitant ABV is conspicuous in its absence, leaving the bitter beans and lactic edge to have their way within. Good, especially if you like, well, coffee.

Bottle: Poured a clear dark ale with a large light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of coffee is dominating with light black chocolate notes. Taste is also dominated by nice aromatic dry coffee notes with good roasted malt backbone and light black chocolate. Body is a bit too light with good carbonation and no alcohol was apparent. Good but body is too thin for style and lacking some character for such a huge beer.

A - Pitch black color with almost no head. Very little creamy tan head, that disappears almost instantly with almost no lacing.

S - A lot of coffee up front and that comes out even when far away from the class. Subsequent sniffs reveal some bittersweet chocolate and tobacco aromas. A touch of tartness although it doesn't really have a strong dark fruit presence. Very much a coffee smelling beer.

T - Similar to the nose. Very strong coffee flavor with some dark bittersweet chocolate going from background to forefront. Mid sip, some bitterness consisting of some earthy hops and some roasted bitterness comes out. Slight sweetness also comes out a bit. Hints of tobacco also come out.

M - Medium body with very little carbonation. Very smooth and a bit velvety.

D - Pretty good drinkability, but you have to like coffee to enjoy this as coffee is very strong in this beer. Not overly bitter or sweet though.

Notes: Bottled June 16, 2009, Bottle #0268. ABV = 10%. Strong coffee flavor with some chocolate. Well balanced between sweet and bitter. Pretty good beer, but nothing great and probably wouldn't get again, unless it was well on sale.

Picked this up at a great little beer store in Arlon, Belgium, Miorge Mihoublon. This is the newer, 11.6 ABV version. Pitch black pour with a one finger caramel-colored head that faded quickly with minimal lacing. Really nice nose that's dominated by fresh roasted coffee along with hints of cocoa, tobacco, and leather. The taste mirrors the nose. Loads of roasty coffee along with hints of wood, cocoa, tobacco, leather, and some subtle licorice. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with perfect carbonation and a great slightly sweet, bitter finish. Overall, this was way better than I had expected. The reviews that I had read did not prepare me for such an amazing beer. And the 11.6 ABV was nowhere to be found. Scary drinkable! Excellent interpretation of a coffee stout! Definitely one of the best I've had! Kudos Menno!
