Thanks, Alex. Side-by-side comparison with the regular Hemel & Aarde.
A - Pours dark brown, huge tan-colored head, spotty lace.
S - The scotch hits you right away, chocolate, peat, char, light smoke. I don't think the barrel did much to enhance the nose on this beer, as it takes away from the sweetness of the base.
T - Similar to the nose. Scotch, oak, chocolate, peat, char. Again, not as well-balanced as the base with an over abundance of a boozy Scotch note. Alcohol is there for sure...a little too much. Finish is light sweetness and Scotch barrel.
M - Full body, heavy carbonation, creamy oak finish.
O - The Scotch barrels hurt this beer, IMO. There's not enough balance when compared to the base beer and the alcohol takes away from the sweetness and smoke. The carbonation was also a distraction for me. Not bad, but not something I'd drink again.

Jan. 2011: 180 ml black-waxed capped green bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Bruichladdich barrel from 1972. ABV is 9.5%. Bottle No. 364 out of a batch of 1776 bottles. Brewed 3. Dec. 2009, bottled 7. June 2010. Bittering hop Nugget, final hop Amarillo, 96.9 EBU. OG 1100, FG 1030. The beer starts gushing out of the bottle shortly after opening. Pitch black colour, huge to big tan head. Strong aroma of peated whisky, tar, old rope and salty seas, also strong roasty notes. The flavour is roasty with a certain malty sweetness, dominated by peat smoke, oak and tar, the high bitterness feels kind of subdued. A pretty impressive beer in my book, but not the right choice if you hate Islay whisky.

209 Vintage poured May 2015.
Thanks to Pushkinwow for the bottle.
Deep black with no head off a vigorous pour. The nose is powerful, full of espresso, roasted malts, peat/smoke. The taste is similar but stronger, coffee, lots of dry roasted malts, peat.smoke, char. The mouthfeel is nice considering no carbonation. i am not a fan of smoky beers, but this one wasn't bad and the best I have had to date (which is a limited sample).

On tap. It has undesired flavors that remainds me of muscat of alexandria. No smoke is detected in my sample. Thin body and small presence of roasted flavors. Need to compare with a bottle.
