July 2013: 330 ml red waxed bottle, 11%, shared by our beerpal Ivar, who bought it in Cambridge. This bourbon barrel aged version appears to be different from the "ordinary" green waxed B.A. version (which we have had previously), there is also a 1% difference in ABV. Pitch black colour, low beige head. Lovely aroma, with distinct notes of bourbon, vanilla and oak, on a roasty background. Roasty flavour with coffee notes, also bourbon, vanilla and oak again. Earlier Rating: 4/6/2011 Total Score: 4.3 180 ml bottle with green waxed top, kindly shared by my beerpal Ivar. ABV is 12%. Pitch black colour, no head, minimal carbonation. Lovely complex aroma, oak, roasted malts, molasses, bourbon and coffee, a touch of fusel alcohols keeps me from giving it a full score. Warming mouthfeel. Oaky flavour with roasty, bourbon and vinous notes, complex and excellent.

Ecstatic about this. Hel & Verdoemenis might just be the best stout ever brewed. To try this wild turkey barrel aged version from 2009 is an absolute treat.

L - first off the bottle look is so fucking classy but thats not what we're rating here.

Beer L - preface by it had a massive hiss whehn I cracked it. No carb loss? Infected? Poured it and it was very volatile. A little worried. Let head settle and poured some more and it didn't foam up like the first few ounces. Strange. Concerning.

Once settled it looks magnificent. The head sits on top like a latte. Absolutely stellar. Initial look rsting is an extremely low (on my scale) 3.5 based on infection concerns. I adjust these factors based off overall experiemce so I may bump this (hopefully).

S - 4.75. Pushing 5. One of the better smells in general ive ever smelled. Its laden with toffee and whipped cream if you could smell the latter. I cant seem to inhale enough of it each time I smell it. Like cold fall air that hits your lungs with an almost euphoric high huffing this liquid does almost the same.

T - im salivating at this point. Oh my. I would argue that this was probably at one point one of the best beers I would ever handle. There is a tinge of off though. A metallic note that is so incredibly subtle is keeping me from being able to dissect this beer. Its surprisingly less roasty than non barrel aged. Its overall less flavorful as well.

Feel is nice and frothy and still crazy carbonated. This carbonation has to be secondary.

Overall. I struggle to call this infected. Most infected beers are an immediate drain pour. This beer is remarkably enjoyable with just a touch of pondering with each sip. Unfortunately this isn't better than normal H&V.

Drinking again on 10-17-22

Completely flat opening and pour. All traces of normal h&v roast are abolished with this. It does however strike notes of old school 2012-2014 bcbs with sweet oxidized notes. Extremely beyond its prime for sure. Touches of soy sauce strike me. Feel is a little gelatinous and there was some type of small slug st the bottom of the glass.

Drinking a third time on 3-11-23

Its definitely passed its prime

Bottle shared by ygtbsm94. Thanks Brad.

Dark brown body with a thin beige cap. Oak, vanilla, booze, cognac? Sweet almonds and booze, biscotti character. Delicious flavor. Easy drinking. Medium bodied. Light carbonation. Flavors meld so well together. Fabulous.

Most barrel-aged beers end up looking like death dug up but Hel & Verdoemenis Misto, which is aged in Wild Turkey bourbon barrels, has retained a lot of its sleek black marble complexion (despite the best efforts of some sneaky and nasty-thick sediment). Its head, however, is another story; not even swirling can resuscitate that.

The beer smells like dark chocolate-covered cigars. It is terribly rich and intricate, but if we were to overlook all the subtle complexities we'd end up with a particularly vanilla-rich black forest cake. But bourbon barrels being what they are it's impossible to make things so simple - I'd have to hire a private detective to uncover all the flavours of this bouquet.

Hel & Verdoemenis is a pretty substantial stout in its own right; it boasts notes of bakers chocolate, teriyaki barbecue, french vanilla ice cream, blackberry jam, and coffee grounds. But to age even such a tall and broad beer in bourbon barrels is akin to slathering lettuce leaf in cream sauce - it won't hold up, one flavour is simply bigger than the other.

Fortunately, in the course of dominating, the charred oak and cigar smoke notes of the bourbon don't completely obliterate the roast maltiness or too much of its dark chocolate and coffee undertones. It makes no qualms about its strength but it is composed; give yourself a lot of time to drink this one (but rest assured you'll enjoy every minute of it).

I've had bourbon-barrel aged beers that taste like heaven... and others that drink like failed suicide. Hel & Verdoemenis ("Hell & Damnation") Misto, contrary to what its name suggests, is definitely a product of the angels; it is a divine, nuanced taste that blends Kentucky's barrels with barley's richest, roastiest flavours. Right on par with the 666, arguably even better.
