330 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled 2/7/2013.

Appearance - Black with a hint of transparency. Small off-white head. Medium collar.

Smell - Lots of intense roasted malt. Slightly fruity. Some whiskey, but not all that intense.

Taste - More whiskey in the flavor. A little nutty. Not much barrel character, just some bourbon liquor. Finishes with a lingering oak flavor.

Mouthfeel - Overcarbonated, but not too badly. Boozy. Medium heavy.

Overall - My palate is shot at this point, but it's still really tasty.

Thanks to Jeffo for the bottle!

Deep brown, ring of tanh head with some spots of lace. Smell is a mix of big roast and chocolate, bourbon, oak, coffee as well as a bit of bitterness. Taste is chocolate fudge and oak, light vanilla, roast malt and bourbon, finishes a bit bitter with a roasty-chocolate aftertaste. Light-medium carbonation, medium bodied. This was also really good, I liked it better than 666 but less than Misto, still a very good stout and would certainly have this again.

Had this in the bottle at Beervana 2013 and I was completely blown away. Still, but a solid 4.5 nonetheless. Had the chance to revisit this beer on 5/14/2014 at Norey's - not the same beer.

6oz. pour served in a sampler. Color was consistent with cola in hue and clarity. Head was 1/8th of an inch and khaki-colored. Nose is typical of a Russian Imperial Stout, but really no evidence of the barrel here - roast, char, dark malts and a hint of cocoa. Taste consistent with nose with just a trace of ethanol. The version out of the bottle was quite vibrant. The draft version gave no impression of barrel-aging whatsoever. Mouthfeel was light-medium in body with an even carbonation level, but a bit too assertive for my sensibilities. Overall - much better in the bottle and I question whether this may actually have been the standard Hel & Verdoemensis. I hope this was the case because this was fairly disappointing.

Many thanks to the very generous mulder1010 for gifting me this beer.

Pours black with a nice semi-white head almost perfectly resembling the crema on an espresso.

Nose is a subtle, well-blended meld of bourbon barrel and roast. Some nice creamy malts.

Taste is a more roast-malty affair with a decent amount of coffee.

Mouthfeel is again quite subtle- a little sweet, a little roast, a very small amount of booze.

Overall this beer surprised me with how subtle it was. It was very tasty and well-balanced, but the big adventurous flavours I expected from it never emerged.
