Picked up a couple of the small 33cl bottles of this at the beer store at the De Molen Brewery. The owner said this was a special batch of the Stout & Hop that was dry-hopped with Sorachi Ace. Dark brown-black pour with huge three finger head with good retention and lacing. The nose is initially strong with citrus, cocoa and roasty malts, but very quickly an almost peaty, electrical kind of smell creeps in to taint it. It faded as it warmed, but was still a little off-putting. The taste is a combination of smokey roasted malt and citrusy, piney, bitter hops. I'm getting hints of bitter dark chocolate and burnt espresso, battling sweet milk chocolate, grapefruit, and caramel with just a touch of the peat I was getting with the nose. The mouthfeel is slighltly fizzy and a little oily with a super dry, bitter finish. This is a much different beer than the original Stout & Hop which I absolutely loved. I am not at all fond of peat, and the fact that it hangs around in the nose and the taste really hurts this one. With that said, it's still a solid offering from De Molen.

I had this on-tap at Max's. Poured into a sample glass.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown with some red when the light hits it. The is a layer of off white head that leaves some nice lacing.

Smell: A nice mix of herbal and citrus hops. There is some roast in the background. The smell isn't strong enough.

Taste: You can tell this is a Sorachi Ace beer right away. Citrus and herbal hop bitterness with some roast showing up in the middle of each sip. There is a mildly sweet bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with smooth, tingly carbonation and a slick finish.

Overall: I thought this one was a bit weird, but I ended up enjoying it. This one is kind of a black IPA, Imperial Stout hybrid. I think I would have another given the chance.
