Pours a dark chestnut brown color with ruby red edges and a two finger beige head that very slowly settles into a lasting cap. The glass is left coated with streaks and chunks of lace.

Slightly smokey, roasted aroma that has a nice balance of subtle earthy hops and sweeter malt notes. Hints of chocolate, caramel, toffee and toast along with a touch of floral, piney hops.

Medium bodied but a bit thinner than expected with a good balance of roasted, sweet and bitter flavors. There's a decent amount of roasted malt that gives off a subtle smoke character but it never feels burnt or overpowering. Hints of bitter dark chocolate, toast, caramel and oatmeal dominate the flavor before finishing with a lingering hop bitterness. Surprisingly hoppy for the style with more dry bitterness than I prefer. This element takes away from the more pleasant malt flavors and unfortunately begins to dominate things as I work my way through the bottle.

Poured an almost black body with small head and minor lace. Aroma is mostly a roasted, grainy malt aroma with hints of coffee and chocolate. Medium-bodied beer that has a roasted malt profile as dominant flavor, there are some coffee and chocolate notes but they are overpowered and don't offer much taste or balance. The finish is dry and grainy and I get a little of heated booziness at one point during the finish.

Pours an opaque deep brown with a frothy tan head that slowly dissipates, leaving modest lacing.

Dark chocolate dominates, with toasted, nutty and toasted malt weighing in. There's a hint of coffee.

Roast malt dominates the flavor profile, finishing a bit acrid and fairly bitter. Chocolate lingers throughout, but the bitterness overwhelms.

Body is moderate, with fairly high carbonation and a carbonic bite.

This one is too bitter and harsh for me.

Poured into a Dogfish signature snifter. Bottleneck says 03052014.

A- Pours a mostly opaque black color with a 1/2 inch tan head that retains well before slowly falling to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a jagged ring behind.

S- Dark roast brings notes of milk chocolate, vanilla and caramel.

T- Moderate roastiness plus a solid shot of hop bitterness. Semisweet with a noticeable alcohol presence. Slightly charry aftertaste.

M- Decent amount of viscosity even for a porter. Medium carbonation and a full body.

O- A straightforward porter that doesn't really stand out among others but is solid enough. I guess that's why it's the "People's" porter.

A: On-tap at Oak Barrel Taproom, poured into a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick, impenetrable consistency. There was an inch of tan-colored, foamy, long-lasting head. Very good lacing.

S: A big, warm aroma of malt, chocolate and coffee.

T: Tasted of roasted malt, a bit of coffee and chocolate (but not too much chocolate. A well-balanced, flavorful porter. One of the best American versions of an English porter you'll find.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a surprisingly dry finish. Medium-bodied.

D: An extremely drinkable porter.

An English? Always thought this was an American Porter. That explains why I enjoy this one so much.
At foothills, most rescently at Duckworths in Charlotte. Solid black/brown pour with brown around the edges. Finger of light tan froth.

Aroma has a balance of roast malt, peat and dark chocolate. Hint of caramels.

Taste is very balanced. Roast malt, dark chocolate, charcoal and a bit of anise balanced by the molasses, chocolate and caramel. Just a bit of spice, finishing with some dryer roast.

Fairly creamy body, lighter mid weight. Drinks great after dinner or on its own in quantity. Should try if you can.

On-tap at the brewpub.

Pours one shade from black with a half-finger light brown head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malts with loads of lightly sweetened chocolate. Also present are hints of charred malts and vanilla.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth and robust roasted malt flavors up front are augmented by dark chocolate flavors almost immediately. The chocolate flavors turn mildly bitter midway through the sip and carry through to any equally mildly bitter ending. Hints of vanilla and molasses flavors wander in and out throughout.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a very nice thickness with smooth and grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could have a few more.

Overall I was excited about trying this beer and it didn't let me down. A very well-done porter with excellent subtleties. Well worth a shot.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance-The beer pours a nice deep brown color with a small rocky brown head that was present upon pouring. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a light level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell- The aroma was rather heavy of dark roasted malt and aromas of chocolate malt. There are undertones of coffee as well as a light sweetness of caramel and vanilla

Taste - The taste begins with a big roasted malt flavor with lots of chocolate tones upfront. Carmel and toffee flavors mingle with these soon after the start, sweetening the taste very lightly. These taste mingle until the end to where they are joined by a roasted coffee and a bit of earthiness. In the end, these new flavors bitter the taste more, with the mix of flavors overall leaving a roasted and bitter chocolate flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel –The body of the brew was on the slightly thinner side for a porter with a carbonation level that was light. The thinner carbonation was great for all the roasted flavors and made for a smooth drinker, although the thin body took away from these slightly and may have been better accentuated by a thicker body.

Overall- A decent porter overall. It had a good level of roasted chocolate and dark malt flavors with a nice bitter bite at the end. Not bad.

Thanks to beerness for this bottle in a recent trade. Dark Foothills brews have been kind to me, so this one is most welcome. 22 oz. bomber split in two.

Pours very dark & headily vigorous, light penetrating only the edges. Nose is strong & pretty: chocolate, roast, sweet malts. Acknowledge the porter love.

People's Porter soars on the nose & crashes back to reality TV in the mouth. Bitter roast races right up to the boundary of ashiness, then slips across. Lovely chocolate balance in the nose is MIA. Sweet malts, ditto.

Not a bad beer, but where's the depth? If the taste doubled-down on the nose, this coulda been a contendah. One-note, but still strangely appealing & slips away easily. Decent enough.

Growler from Riverside beverage company in Chattanooga. Dark black, puffy tan head. Smells good, roasty malts and very inviting. Flavor was rich, hint of dark chocolate but none of the coffee that other reviewers have noted. Overall this was very tasty and I was not sad I chose this over the hoppyum this time. I think I may need some sexual chocolate at this point...

Rich aroma has burnt wood, unsweet chocolate and quality coffee notes with undertones of molasses and licorice. Got my mouth watering! It pours an opaque dark-chocolate brown with a thick, fluffy and rather persistent light tan head. Delicious flavor lives up to the aroma, having roast coffee, chocolate, molasses and licorice tones plus a hint of caramel and a bitter hoppy undertone that actually helps round out the flavor rather than detract from it. Texture is the beer's weakest point - body is on the thin side, it seems, for a porter, and there is just a little fizz.

People's porter is a strong dark brown color with a surprisingly heavy thickness in its look. A light brown head rises to just over one finger and rests there pretty well, fading slowly but leaving a firm, sturdy foam that never fades beyond that. Lacing is left clinging to the glass in mostly patching pretty heavily.
The aroma, while holding some very nice elements and well befitting a porter, was somewhat muted. Vanilla-like sweetness balances some bitterness along with cocoa and coffee notes in a big roast, and a hint of nuts is also present.
The profile of the flavor is mainly roast, caramel, a touch of char, and a bit of cocoa. The flavors play off each other well and come out more strongly on the tongue than they did in the nose. Roast gives off the remeniscence of coffee graounds along with the char, which gives a hint of wood in itself.
For a porter, and especially considering the appearance, it's a little thin. It's more something underlying, as it begins with a firm heft, but something falls off as it goes. It has a crispness that isn't too much and is smooth enough to satisfy if only it didn't have that thinness in the body.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark ruby color. The head is a fluffy, creamy two-finger mocha shade. It has a soft texture, nice retention, and leaves behind plenty of splotchy lacing on the glass.

S: There's a good deal going on in the nose. Milk chocolate seems to be the dominant note, while both cream and coffee do a good job of underlying it. I also seem to pick up something suggesting citrusy as well. Citrusy hops don't always work in a porter, but they do here. Everything seems to be well integrated.

T: I don't pick up much of the chocolate or cream I did on the nose. Rather, the most prevalent flavor is coffee - and lots of it. When done right in a porter/stout, piny hop bitterness can make the beer generally resemble espresso, and it does here. Post-swallow, there's less of a coffee flavor and more of a general hoppy note. Very vague suggestions of fruit esters seem to hang around here and there. Hoppy porters are never my favorite style, but this one seems to work quite well considering.

M: There isn't much heft on the palate; since this is more sweet than bitter, this lightness is welcome. It's also bone dry and strongly carbonated; naturally, this is very easy to drink.

O: A decent - if not amazing - robust porter, the hops here work better than some others in the style. Still, I wish some more of the malt character came through.

A: This poured an opaque cola with moderate tan head.
S: It smelled like dry roasted coffee and cocoa powder.
T: It tasted like dry roasted coffee and cocoa powder, with a little copper hops. It had a clean bitter and dry aftertaste.
M: It was watery with moderate carbonation. Decent body.
D: This was a solid porter with a basic but very enjoyable scent and taste. The body was fitting for the style, and the finish was pretty smooth, so it was easy to drink. Solid brew.

picked up this bottle a few weeks ago when i was in NC. enjoyed out of my duck rabbit snifter.

a - poured a watery brown that settled as almost black with a thin mocha grey colored frothy milkshake like head. lacing was streaky, but what was there, clung.

s - roasted malts and barley with some cocoa powder. some char sting. very classic to style.

t - strong chocolate malts. lots of burnt roasted char. finishes dry and bitter. drying bitter coffee flavors.

m - mouth is charred and bubbly. medium bodied. burnt.

o - overall a nice porter, not my favorite. a bit too much burnt chocolate for me, but enjoyable. robust indeed.

Good if a bit unremarkable take at an English Porter.

Presentation: 22 oz brown capped bottle. Label with the poppy/retro branded Foothills feel on this occasion with a retro branding illustration of a cliche revolutionary holding up a pint, trite design somewhere between a retro take and a Fairey reference, but it actually works… Side narrative offers a small description of style and taste. Notes SRM: 30.1, IBU: 43, and 6.25% Alc. by Vol. Served in a tulip glass.

A - Deep brown pour. Nice ecru creamy head with medium retention, fair surface retention and good lacing.

S - Roasted nose, notes of coffee, hint of chocolate, bitter insinuation…

T - Flavor follows similarly, roasted coffee, emerging bitter counter punch with touches of chocolate.

M - Medium to medium-ligh body, small if tingly carbonation… There is something a bit thin in the feel at points. Not bad but not as creamy, or rounded as one would prefer.

O - Quite a nice quaff, nothing for the memory but worth the local offer.

Notes: Bomber picked up the day it was bottled, and had shortly thereafter. Fair porter, good quality bracket, but in line with the overall benchmark impression I got from most Foothills brews. Now, I´d gladly have it again when passing through the town.

A: A dark brown pour with a big and fluffy light brown head. Fades somewhat slowly, leaving great lacework behind.

S: Creamy roasted malt with sweet caramel and some toffee. Dark chocolate with a little char. Hints of coffee bean. Caramel element really stands out here, wonderful.

T: Lots of toffee up front, almost an overload. Some bitter chocolate, roast and coffee in the middle. Very metallic, especially in the aftertaste. I think it's actually some sort of herbal hop presence that makes it taste like you're sucking on nickels. A touch of smoke in the lingering aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied and smooth.

O: Strange metallic presence in the taste really drags this one down. It's too bad, I had high hopes from the aroma. It's drinkable enough to finish at least.

A: Black body, dark brown highlights, and two fingers of fine tan head that settle slowly into a thick ring and leave lots of lace. Extremely attractive.

S: NIcely aromatic, with a strong mixture of dark fruit and coffee. Lots of raisin, dark chocolate, and char. Really good.

T: Sweet raisin up front, instantly overwhelmed by piquant coffee. Midway through the chocolate and smoky char notes come to the fore, with some earthy hops bitterness anchoring the finish. The aftertaste is a little on the bitter and watery side, but other than that it's really quite nice.

M: Definitely on the light-bodied side of the style, with lots of lively, spritzy carbonation. A little too...carefree for a Porter.

O: Very enjoyable, with some nice intensity especially in the aroma. The back end of the flavor was a bit of a letdown comparatively, as was the mouthfeel - both a little watery and astringent. Still, I like to see a Porter go for broke on the roasty/bitter end of the spectrum.

Poured from a 22oz brown bomber into a Duvel tulip. No freshness date. Purchased at Peabody's Wine and Beer Merchants for $3.99.

A: Very dark brown with a short, 1/2-finger light beige head that disappears quickly but does leave a few spots of lace.

S: This brew has a really nice blend of coffee, caramel, and chocolate aromas to accent the dark maltiness with a fair dose of roast. Not much on the hops front.

T: Wow -- I am really impressed with this porter. It straddles the English Brown Porter/Robust Porter style and mixes the best of both with a deft touch of caramel sweetness to counter the strong roast note. The coffee and chocolate flavors provide further complexity. This is one of the best porters I have had in a long time -- a great balance of sweet, roast, chocolate, and coffee with plenty of dark maltiness.

M: Solid mouthfeel with medium body and even carbonation to make it very smooth.

O: I definitely will pick up more of this brew -- a superb example of a medium ABV porter.

A: Pours a dark chestnut color with a one finger tan head that settles down to a light cap over the surface.

S: Roasted malt, coffee and espresso right away. Just a bit of chocolate in there as well.

T: Lots of roasted malt with some day old coffee and some citrusy hops trying to pull through the malt. Finish gives a touch of toffee, hop resin and some charred espresso. Seems like the flavors start to fall apart a bit as it warms, but this is a pretty solid porter. Glad I got to try this.

Dark coloring and a touch of ruby at the edges of the glass, this porter had a very stout like appearance. The head was a bit thin.

The scent was dry and chocolatey with some earthy tones.

The taste is robust with chocolate and toffee notes. There's some roasted malt and roasted coffee towards the end but it finished with a watery feel and taste. There is a bit of earthiness at points but its not distracting.

Stronger scents and less watery in the finish and this could be a great one.

People’s Porter pours a very dark, chocolate fudge color. It’s nearly opaque. A few, faint burgundy highlights are noted with backlighting. Mostly at the outer edges. A tan head covers the top and rises to about a finger in height. It’s rather quick to recede and leaves a spotty coat of lace trailing down the glass.

The nose is just a tad weak. More muscle is needed. Still smells pretty good though. It does feature a nice mix of roasted and chocolate malts. It doesn’t smell very sweet. There may be a hint of light caramel, but not much. Roasted coffee is noted early and it adds quite a bit to the mix. I’m a coffee fan, so that works for me. Smells good. Alcohol is masked very well and isn’t noticeable. A little more strength would easily bump this one a notch.

The flavor is quite good. The malt base is full of chocolate and roasted malt notes. The chocolate variety is bittersweet and perhaps even a little cocoa-ish. Light, sweet caramel is noted, but is secondary. Roasted coffee adds quite a bit to the overall flavor. It complements the malts extremely well and even adds a slightly charred twist to the flavor. There really isn’t much of an alcohol factor in this one. It’s blended very well. Finishes malty with a java blast.

The body is on the lighter side of medium. Carbonation is light and soft. It’s smooth, but a bit more body would improve it even more. Nevertheless, it’s tasty and goes down easy. I like the bomber serving size. Great call.

People’s Porter is another nice release from Foothills Brewing Company. They brew some really good beer. This one could be improved with a slightly stronger nose and a bit more body. Damn tasty as it is though. Easy recommendation.

Dark, opaque, nearly black color with a solid head of tan foam that soon shrinks to a creamy cap. Somewhat sweet dark chocolate and slightly charred black malt aroma. Increased black malt in the flavor along with an added dark fruitiness. Roasted chocolate and coffee with some earthy bitterness. Medium, roasty, and drying. A little better on tap, but a worthy addition to the Foothills bottling line.

Reviewed on 06/21/2009. I had this on draft. This beer pours brown with a small head. The aroma is of coffee and roasted malt. The flavor is of bitter chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt. Robust palate and quite delicious. This was a surprisingly top-notch porter.
