look: Very dark brown, decent sized tan head on the pour.
smell: mild roasty semi-sweet chocolate.
taste: much like the nose, though i guess i would call it roasty bitter-sweet chocolate. Nice Porter.

Pours a menacingly dark mahogany, with ruby highlights at the base and along the sides. Nice finger-width head, tan in color, which storms as it dissipates- large frothy bubbles growing and collapsing over themselves, gargling like the swamp lair of some cartoon villain. Lacing is o.k.

Semi-intense aromas of chocolate, Vienna roast, molasses, and toffee. Sweetness and volatile alcohol is a treat for the nose. There is a low hop aroma- floral, perhaps, and a bit of sharpness coming from somewhere. Toffee notes increase as beer is warming.

Primary flavor is a soothing roast quality- cocoa and coffee, very slight burnt caramel. Delicate floral hop quality has a few moments, but is generally overwhelmed by the roasted sweetness of the malt. Coffee and toffee are playing tug-of-war. Pleasant.

Medium body. There is a quick zip to the carbonation with each sip, followed by a nice and smooth fullness. Tartness comes from the roasted elements of the brew, and there is a slight astringent aftertaste.

Very solid porter. Good malt character Roasted profile makes a wholesome brew. Drink it for breakfast.

this is a most excellent porter, a really top notch example of the style, and another killer beer from foothills, who has not missed at all in my limited experience. i love me an english style porter, i like to feel and taste the yeast with the dark malts and not be too bombarded by hops in the finish, and thats exactly what this is. it is a little darker and more deep on the grain than a lot of its peers, closer to black than brown on the pour with a bright luster and a full inch of majorly thick tan foam. it smells and tastes spot on for the style, with dark chocolate bitterness like one of those high cocoa craft chocolate bars, same sort of feel to, almost crumbly for a liquid, and on the dry side. the bottom end seems almost burnt, just short of it, with really developed dark grain character and less of the balancing caramel malt in the middle than a lot of these have. yeast is classic and english and gives a creaminess to the feel and a bread crust flavor to the finish as well. smooth and weighty for its lower alcohol content, this is big enough beer for cold winter evenings for me, but has multi season versatility without a doubt. i like these being on the darker end, not even flirting with being a brown ale, and this is pinpointed there on the spectrum. this reminds me of some of the other well known classics and best examples of their style. black butte from deschutes comes to mind here. if this were regularly available here in colorado, it would be a staple for my fridge. i would love to try the coffee edition! thanks to wcu80 for the hookup on this one!

Great American Porter. Subtle nose with hints of chocolate. Really well balanced, with chocolate malt and non-offensive hops coming through. Very drinkable.

12oz bottle in a tulip.

Pours a dark brown/black color with a beefy British tan colored head. Opaque. Fat rings of web lacing and a thick film remain as the liquid level drops.

Coffee, roasted malt, some caramel and toffee sweetness.

Dark chocolate, dark coffee, and strong roasted malts. A nod to toffee flavor in the English style brew.

Despite the heavy bodied look, it's quite smooth and drinkable. Medium feel with good carbonation. There's some hop bitterness. It lacks any unpleasant aftertaste or film that I've picked up in other porters.

A welcome gift from a beer buddy who brought this back from NC. This is my first of this beer and I'm already looking forward to the rest of the sixer.
