This IPA was shockingly good and quite lives up to it's name. Very small amount of bitterness and more so of a sweet, floral and full flavored in the hop range. All in all, this is another amazing good brew from North Carolina with a perfect balance of all things bitter, sweet and full of flavor and richness. You'll find no watery weakness in this IPA.

Foothills Brewing Co. "Hoppyum IPA"
on tap @ Carolina Beer Co., Charlotte International Airport on April 25, 2013
$7.49 / pint

Notes: Cloudy orange body with a brass cast beneath a short head of white that shows only average retention (might be a dirty bar glass). The aroma displays grapefruit, tangerine, and pine over a gently caramelish malt base. The flavor follows with the malt acting as a support for the hops. Medium bodied with a standard carbonation. Dry hoppy finish with some lingering pine.

Look is mostly filtered dark amber. Smell is dank citrus as your might expect. Pours a thick one once head. Taste is citrus and bready. Smooth in the mouth. Good beer.

Cloudy orange-amber with a persistent creamy film.

Smell is pungent rug, pine, cat pee, grapefruit, and more pine--classic West Coast here.

Taste is not as pungent or bitter, with sugared grapefruit, and orange. A little dankness pops here and there.

Slick feel.

Shorty review. 12 oz bottle, undated. It's not very new, for sure. Large head with good retention and lacing. Beer is a nice amber. Nose is mostly caramel and other nutty malts. Not much of the Simcoe hops left in nose, but some in taste, though malts prevail. Mellow, not bitter. Light to medium mouthfeel, light carbonation, not as drying as could be. OK.

Great IPA brewed in N.C. Bought some after my bike broke down in Ashville, NC. Pleasantly surprised. Very good. Kept me happy while the bike was being repaired.

12oz bottle from ??? at bottle share. Golden pour with a short tight head. Aroma greets you with flowery, piney hoppiness. Hops continue on in the taste, more dominant than the malt backbone hiding in the background. Pretty well balanced brew..

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, unreadable bottle code on the neck. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, lemon/orange peel, pine, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt notes; with decent strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, lemon/orange peel, pine, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, lemon/orange rind, pine, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and minimal lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, that increases through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/sticky/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good IPA. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. Probably over 6 months old judging by the protein cloudiness, but was still very enjoyable.

Pretty decent...at first. For an IPA its pretty dry- actually finishes like an IPL. Overall, taste and smell are good, but by the time you finins one, it has an astringent quality thats more noticeable than most IPA's. Better than some, but there are definitely better choices out there these days.

Rich amber body, finely carbonated half in head fading quickly
Big sweet mango smell. Hops, tangerine, orange clover honey. Sort of smells amber-ish. Some caramel notes
Candied cirtus with a hint of pine. Very fruity sweet hops. Mango, orange, grapefruit
A little dry but otherwise a fine medium body
I like this beer a lot, but the dryness and bitter aftertaste are noticeable weak points

Served on tap in a pint glass.

Appearance: A darker Amber with a thin off white head.

Smell: Citrus with light pine notes.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste of sweeter citrus with a hint of bitter hops and pine notes.

Overall: Good IPA. I would definitely buy this one again.

Had out it of the 750ml bottle so didn't see it but it had a great hoppy taste! The malts create that nutty flavor on the Palette followed by the lingering bitterness of 78 IBU. Would buy again.

Dark copper in color, white head good retention. Aroma and hop taste is mix of citrus and pine. Quite bitter, a bit too much for me. Medium bodied.

Pours a light honey/amber with a lot of beaten egg tone head that lingers a good while before dissipating. Smell is strongly hoppy, but there's some malt sweetness to balance the bitter grapefruit notes. The hoppiness is much more subtle in the taste; serves as a cushy base on which the neutral malts ride on top, until reminding you of its presence on the finish. I really enjoy the full, but not heavy mouthfeel. Well-masked alcohol content, too. I'm not a big IPA guy, but this one is pretty good, and reasonably drinkable.

Appearance - copper in color. Almost reminds me of an amber or red ale. Not what I had expected. Good lacing and head retention. Smell - definitely piney on the nose. Not much fruit in the smell. Taste - follows the nose in some aspects, bitter on the back end but somehow there's a smooth malt flavor as well. I get absolutely no fruit flavor from this. Just seems like a basic IPA to me. Overall - Just a basic IPA. It doesn't delineate itself from anything else, but it is certainly refreshing and it is at a good ABV level.

Poured a hazy copper with a decently persisting off-white head of medium density. Lacing is solid, as is the ring around the glass as the head falls.

Original aroma is very sweet- resembling tangerine and those hard citrus candies you sometimes see around Christmas time (does anyone know what I'm talking about? Can't for the life of me think of what they're called). There is a bit of pine, which grows to be the dominant smell as the beer warms, along with passion fruit, and some nuttiness from the malt. Aroma is very strong, and undeniably pleasant. Back of the bottle says they added some yum- I can certainly smell it.

Pine and light citrus fill the mouth with the first sip. The length of the bitterness increases as the beer warms, and though the aftertaste may be slightly one-note, the Simcoe smack is agreeable to this drinker. The beer is slightly sweet, nutty, and slightly tart as well.

Medium body, medium carbonation, with a drying finish.

The yum is strong in this one. Hoppyum is sweet, somewhat tart, and a good showcase for a good hop varietal. Y'all should roll on down to Winston and grab one of these!

12-pack - $8.99 at Bullock's Wine & Spirits in Marietta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a clear, darkish coppery body with just shy of an inch of whitish foam.

Smell: Spicy, floral and citrusy with an underlying touch of morning-moist pine joins for a tropical aroma atop the toasted, lightly grainy pales malts.

Taste: Atop, citrusy, floral and spicy tastes, with a toasted pale maltiness beneath. As the malts subside, the citric, stern florals remain. Moderately bitter. Drying, acidic finish with some lingering albeit slackening bitterness with touches of pine and grapefruit.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: It's an IPA.

A dark orange color with a fingers worth of white head. Smell is of citrus and light caramel malts. Taste is similar with a malt body, citrus, and herbal hops. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Overall drinkable but fairly forgettable.

L: A bright copper tinted amber pour produces a lacy, clingy cream colored 2” foam column that is moderately persistent.

S: Biscuit and fruit with some herbal and malt notes. Hop and malt aromas are evenly balanced.

T: Fruit, hop earthiness, light biscuit, and traces of mineral lead to a dry lingering bitterness. Balance to the hops with medium low malt, medium hop flavor and medium hop bitterness.

F: Medium body and carbonation.

O: A very tasty, well balanced IPA

Almost no hop aroma. Fruity pebbles, red or rye malts. Super dry. Clean, medium finish. I feel like this is good, or borderline real good. Less hoppy, more yum.

I had this on draft three weeks ago while in a pizza place in NC. I though it was an outstanding IPA. I did not have time to write a review then but merely scored it (Oct 15).

I just had to have it again and located it in a store in Richmond VA. Poured from a bottle into a nonic glass. Orange in color. Smell was fantastic. There is a nice hoppy/bitter taste that is not overwhelming as it sometimes can be in an IPA.

Just a great IPA that is definitely on my list of IPAs I would not hesitate to buy again.

Poured into IPA glass. The color is golden yellow with a creamy milk-white head and lacing. The smell is much maltier than I would expect from an IPA. It's not very hoppy and I note very little citrus. Rather, I'm getting a caramel-like sweet smell. The taste follow the nose: this tastes more like an old ale than an IPA. It's bready, malty, nutty, and has a distinct caramel sweetness. Only at the end do you taste a rather tame hoppy bitterness. It's only 78 IBU's. What sets this ale apart is it's thick, creamy mouthfeel. At only 6.25 ABV, it's very drinkable. My guess is that IPA enthusiasts may rate this ale low for lack of a hoppy, citrusy bite. Being more of a maltmeister, I enjoyed it and would gladly drink it more often if it were available in New Jersey.

12 oz bottle poured into a mug.

Golden amber with 2 fingers of creamy white head. Excellent clarity with lively carbonation.

Dank greens, pine, candied citrus, and caramel.

Thick honey, caramel, and toffee backbone. Lightly dank hop flavors along with candied orange, honeydew, and pine resin.

Medium bodied, smooth, oily, and off-dry with a medium-light bitterness.

Pretty malt forward but it has a decent Simcoe hop profile hiding beneath.
