Look: Opaque black with a thick mocha colored head.

Smell: Fruity. Dark cherries, black malt, dark chocolate, rich espresso, and fruit leather.

Taste: Much like the nose only way more subtle. Dark chocolate, roasty black malt, chocolate covered dark cherries, light vanilla, and fruit leather.

Feel: Smooth and creamy given the ABV. Big bodied. Medium bitterness. Alcohol is apparent but smooth.

Overall: A good stout that is just too subtle in flavor. I wanted more of anything. All the flavors are right I just want something to come forward.

Pitch black in color with a fingernail of brown around the rim and covering most of the top. Light lacing is present. The aroma is of dark roasted barley. I'm tasting plenty of roasted barley, dark chocolate with a lightly boozy finish. The mouth is velvety smooth.

22 oz bomber, January 2018, poured into a tulip glass. Didn't feel like waiting. Pitch black, two finger tan head that retains well, recedes slowly. Aroma of cocoa, chocolate, and mild smoke. The taste follows the nose closely, with some anise, some dark fruits, and a bitter finish (coffee/espresso like). The mouthfeel is medium heavy, with a midrange amount of carbonation to keep things lively. Everything smooths out some as it warms, and I get some more of the toffee notes mentioned on the bottle. Overall, a pretty tasty RIS. It doesn't overwhelm you with sweetness or too much roast, which at times, can be a good thing.

Drank this back to back with the barrel aged version. These had a higher demand almost 10 years ago compared with present day. Pours black, 1/3" brown head on the top. Aroma of roasted chocolate malt which gives off both coffee and cocao impressions in subtle ways.

Taste follows with the usual hallmarks of style for an imperial stout, heft, viscosity, chocolate, unsweetened. There is a slight amount of dark fruit bitterness in there, but its minimal, the more American aspects of the beer (as opposed to Russian Imperial Stout) keep that dark fruit noise in check for the most part. Finishes kind of sticky and bitter. Its a neat beer to check out once, but hardly unique, each state has several breweries making a similar beer.

I like the artwork, and I'm sure some of those who pose like they don't still appreciate the chance to virtue signal against it. Really brings people together. Except for the El Dorado casino in Reno who lies to your face about letting you have a bottle share during March Madness.

2017 batch poured into a snifter. Opaque brown color with a thick tan head. The nose featured roasted malt with coffee, char, and faint cocoa. The taste was much like a typical RIS: bitter roasted malt, smooth chocolate malt, floral notes, and a nice roasted char flavor. Well-balanced with a great full feel. Not too sweet. Really nice.

Thanks to BubbaBeerMan for sending this one! February 2013 vintage bottle, cellared since, consumed August 2017. Poured from the 22 oz. bottle into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass.

A: Very very dark brown, opaque. A half-finger's worth of tan head lasts quite well, and fairly low visible carbonation.

S: Chocolate and coffee, cacao nibs and mocha. Dark roasted malts and tobacco. Some notes of vanilla as well. A light fruitiness that might be from the coffee or from the yeast, I'm not sure. A pretty nice aroma here.

T: Chocolate and coffee again up front. Roasted malts and cacao. The mildest of bitter char character to the roasted malts. Vanilla and caramel again with some tobacco dryness. I'm not getting the fruitiness on the palate like I did on the nose. More bitter baker’s chocolate and dark cacao nibs at the swallow.

M: A thick body overall, though maybe average for an imperial stout these days. Low carbonation sensation but as expected for style. The alcohol presence is restrained.

O: A good beer for sure. But having drank it in close proximity to a vintage Speedway Stout, I preferred the Speedway significantly in flavors and complexity and body. Still, quite an enjoyable beer.
