Cottonwood Pumpkin Spiced AleCottonwood Pumpkin Spiced Ale
Notes: This crisp, dry ale uses organic cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger brewed with real pumpkin and a blend of North American and British malts to give Mom’s pumpkin pie some serious competition. A fall favorite skillfully brewed by Foothills.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a brilliant copper color and a clear consistency. There was a small amount of foamy head that quickly dissipated. Below average lacing.

S: A big, enticing aroma of pumpkin, spices, and malt.

T: Tasted of pumpkin (of course), spices (cinnamon especially), and malt in the finish. A very well-balanced flavor that's just complex enough and easy to drink.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a prickly finish. Light- to medium-bodied.

O: One the better pumpkin ales I've tried. This - for some reason - isn't a style that a lot of breweries get right, but this one does the trick.

12oz into a snifter...

A: light copper bronze; about an eighth of an inch of light beige foam; not much retention or lace.

S: allspice; ginger; nutmeg; clove; a lot of pumpkin spice going on here; maybe some graham cracker crust.

T: most of the spices mentioned above, but things get real clove-y towards the end and it gets pretty sweet; foundation of this brew could use some extra malt; not bitter at all.

M: A touch thin; low carbonation; pretty plain mouthfeel.

O: An OK pumpkin ale. Not bad, but not really anything special.

A: Nice transparent dark bronze and orange body with a fizzy and foamy off-white fluffy head. The head dies down pretty fast and doesn't leaving lacing. It still looks great.

S: It smells heavily of pumpkin pie spices. Nutmeg comes to mind first as it seems to be the heaviest scent. Then there is some light cinnamon and gingerbread cookie. It smells very nice. I don't pick up any hop character.

T: The spices are there, but there doesn't seem to be much character to the beer other than the spices. I get cinnamon mostly up front, then the flavor of clove comes in like a freight train. Still there is no real beer flavor to this. It tastes like spiced water.

M: The mouthfeel feels very watery and way too thin. There is literally no body to the beer.

O: Overall I thought the beer started out really nice visually, then I was fooled by the scent. It gave the impression that it would be a really nice beer but it was nearly flavorless with the exception of spices and had absolutely no body to speak of. A beer like this really needs a good foundation to set itself on. Without a good foundation the spices are worthless.

Poured this Pumpkin Ale from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Poured a clear copper color, produced a very thin white head, poor retention and it left no lacing on the glass. The aroma consisted of roasted pumpkin and pumpkin spice. Medium in body, the ale is a little off balance in my opinion, watery- thinness that gives way to pumpkin spice. With the amount of spice, I would like to have seen a heavier dose of malted grain to balance. Overall, poor example of the style.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a glass.

Look: Orange, honey-like color. One finger head.
Smell: Lots of cinnamon and clove up front. A little bit sweet smelling.
Taste: Cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg right away. Very little pumpkin, if any. I'm not getting much backbone from the malts or flavor depth. Once the pie spices fade, there is a leathery bitterness than hangs around.
Mouthfeel: Active carbonation on the tongue. Lighter than I expected from an autumn pumpkin ale. Thin?
Overall: This one is all about the spice. It's ok, but there are better.

Appearance - pours bright copper color with thin off white head that lasts much longer than expected.

Aroma - Nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin, allspice, clove.

Taste - The taste is the exact same as the nose but slightly muted. The flavors all seem a little watered down. There is not as much pumpkin in the taste mostly spices.

Feel - Pretty light, prickly carbonation little bite from the spices.

Overall - A decent pumpkin ale, hits the nose and taste but a little thin and watered down.

This was alsways a fall staple for me when I first moved to NC.,I had it for the first time this year on tap at MCcoul's in Greensboro this weekend.Poured into an imperial pint glass a deep copper/bronze with a thinner white head atop.Mild spiced notes in the nose, mainly nutmeg and cinnamon.A well rounded palate with the spice not being over the top, cinnamon stands out mainly, not overly sweet wich is a good thing. An easy going but flavorful pumpkin, again a regular for me in the fall here in NC.

I was hoping that since Foothills bought out Cottonwood a while back, that this beer would improve. It has, but not dramatically enough to make a huge difference. This one pours from a 12oz bottle into a snifter type glass. The beer emerges clear and dark amber in color with kind of a small, wispy head. The head recedes into a small ring around the edges of the beer.

Aroma on this one is still nice, as it was in the olden days. Loaded with pumpkin-pie spices; cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice. A good dose of caramel malt adds some sweet aromas as well as some variety. There is a bit of sourness present but I dont think this really detracts from anything overall.

The flavor, although improved, is still not quite there. The spices are a little overwhelming in the flavor. I feel like I have a potpourri bag in my mouth. The aftertaste is long a kind of cloying. The thin body is by far the biggest disappointment in this one. Quite watery and dry.

I think this one has improved since Foothills has put its stamp on it, but this is not near the top of the list of pumpkin beers out there. I say pass this one by.

A fairly typical pumpkin ale. Christmas/potpourrie spicing in a malty beer.

Nice deep amber color, clear. Head is minimal with a bit of lacing.

Aroma is the Christmas thing, cinnamon and nutmeg and pumpkin spices, not overdone but not my thing either.

Flavor is fairly mild, a slightly sweet, malty beer with the Christmas spices.

Mouthfeel is crisp and rich enough for the style. A lot of Pumpkin Ales are watery.

Not bad if you are into this sort of beer.
