750ml corked and caged bottle received as generous gift from BA Goldorak in July 2007. Poured in April 2008.

Pours a murky brown. Maybe a finger of head, bubbles ranging from huge to tiny, persists across only parts of the surface. Not too attractive.

But the aroma is sublime - like putting your head into a mash. Scrumptious malt with just a hint of alcohol keeping it from perfection. The taste follows in kind - definitely malt-led, doughy, some caramel - but a little hop bite toward the end to keep things on edge. For such a malty beer Alt Secrete is surprisingly dry, almost overly so - I want to take a sip of water between drinks just to rehydrate.

I like this beer probably more than my scores indicate. I've no idea if it's to style, but obviously made with great care and an affection for exploring rich malt flavors. Thank you, Three Musketeers, and thank you, Goldorak!

Very dark brown with a thin head. Tastes yeasty and like an old ale, grapefruit hops. A bit toasted malt, pepper, drying finish. Aroma neutral to a bit funky and a bit boozy. Maybe better with foods. A lot of good ideas that did not team for me this night.

Bottle: Poured a medium brown color alt with a large foamy head with some good retention. Aroma of deep caramel malt with some hint of sweetness and nuts. Taste is also dominated by some deep caramel malt with some nice notes of nuts and some sweetness. Full body with some great carbonation. Very well done from this always improving brewery.

2008 version picked up at Atwater market, 5.5%.

Pours a clear dark reddish brown, almost ruby red in the light, thick light tan head forms, drops some decent lacing, retains a pretty thick layer and ring. Smell is nice, very malty, caramel, bread, grains, dark fruits, figs, bit of an orange peel kick to it, some spice, light metallic, not bad. Taste is similar, dark fruits and caramel, heavy bready maltiness, there is some orangy/citrus/floral type of flavour in the finish, with a bitter peel and metallic finish, quite dry and bitter, very nice. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, pretty thick, with medium carbonation, goes down easy. I like the bitter edge to this one and the body is really nice, super chewy.

350ml corked bottle

Decanted a deep reddish-brown hazey ale into the stein. Wonderful billowy 3 finger sticky cap that lasts and laces

Aroma: Wunderbar! Almonds, bread, woody earthyness, a light musty-sweetness.

Profile: Toasty, nutty, rich thick malts..full bodied and a rich mouth liquid toasted walnut bread smeard with a leafy herbal-woody marzipan...totally non cloying...finishes with the ample noble hops drying the flavor out with a sharp wet birch wood bark tone as the dark malts leave a light pucker...bready herbal after taste.

Rich, deeply flavorful, satisfying and outrageously drinkable...perhaps that is the secret of this "Sticke"

Probably this brewer’s best effort Alt to die for...hope it’s available again...I’ll buy cases next time.

Pours into my 25cl tulip glass with a fairly dense, tan colored, initially three-finger thick head. The beer is a murky, concentrated, dark amber color that shows a deeply hazy, bright red color when held up to the light. The aroma has lots of caramelized malt notes to it that are lightly offset by some spicy hop notes. Sweet smelling, with a berry / raisin like fruitiness, aromas of toasted malt, spicy hop notes similar to cinnamon and candied lemon zest as well as a touch of herbal notes in the finish.

This has a rich, caramelized sweetness to it that does not taste overly cloying. This up front sweetness is balanced in the finish by both an herbal hop bitterness (that is just a touch green) as well as a toasted malt character (almost a cocoa note there towards the end too). The mix of caramel malt and spicy hops contribute a flavor that is something like cinnamon, though not quite. The malt contributes a touch of nuttiness to the flavor profile as well. The hop character here is actually pretty significant; the over-abundance of caramel malt notes here make you forget about them at times, but there is a fair bitterness this brew as well as a lightly grassy, definitely herbal and a certain, candied citrus peel note that are each quite distinctly noticeable once you try and ignore the malt.

This is a very rich brew with an over-abundance of caramelized malt character; it is really just a bit too much, though it doesn't make this undrinkable. This definitely has a touch of murky malt flavors to it that go along with the appearance; actually I am surprised how murky this is even after sitting in my fridge for a couple weeks.

Courtesy of 3vandoo in CdnBIF3. Pour from a 750ml, dark chestnut, cloudy good head retention. Nose- soft caramels. Taste- sweet dough and spice. Quite grassy bitter on the finish which leaves a drying aftertaste. Aspirin like bitterness/chalkiness which gets a bit much after awhile.
