Pours a very slightly translucent black (quite dark). A finger-width or two of head that is somewhere in between off-white and tan. Recedes to a thin layer that stays fairly well.

Coffee is the most noticeable scent, a bit of cocoa. A general roasted scent. Smells quite like a stout, though a noticeable difference is present that is hard to articulate.

Taste is quite similar to the nose, but is sufficiently light that it becomes very clear that this is not a stout. Coffee, cocoa, a bit of vanilla. Very mild bitterness. Lighter than it all sounds. Enjoyable.

Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Pretty smooth feel.

Overall, a pretty nice beer. Quite flavourful.

347ml bottle

A: deep almost opaque brown, finger of head falls off quickly to lace and ring on edge

S roast malt aromas of coffee, hint of chocolate

T roast malt coffee flavours open, rolls into tart mid pallet with smoothness coming through from hops and carbonation, and a tangy lingering bitter finish of coffee, chocolate

M Light-medium body, good carbonation enhances the creaminess of the mid pallet.

D An enjoyable schwarzbier, a good pairing with desert.

More depth than a typical schwarzbier and overall a very pleasant surprise!

Pours a clear and attractive dark chestnut colour with a creamy cappuccino coloured head with impressive retention. A more fulsome and creamy mouthfeel than typical for such a 5% lager. Aroma has an impressive variety of roasted dark and chocolate malts, including coffee and hickory tones. That smokiness is also present in the taste along with the full spectrum of "roasted malt" possibilities, plus a clean bitterness to the finish.

Lacking the simple sweetness that's the body of many German schwarzbiers, this is a beer I would highly recommend.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass

Appearance - pours a dark brown (almost black) with a huge fluffy caramel colour head. This is accompanied by slight lacing. There seems to be some good carbonation.

Smell - hops, toffee/caramel, coffee, cocoa and vanilla. Also some roasted oats.

Taste & Mouth - tastes much lighter than it looks. Sweetness of cocoa and vanilla comes through first, and then some hops. Then you are left with a sweet yet dry after taste. Reminds me slightly of Kahlua

Drink - This has the look of a great winter beer, but strangely comes across as refreshing and something that can be enjoyed any time of the year. An above average beer that is worth a try.

12 oz bottle at bobsy's, not sure who brought this one!

Pours a clear dark orange/brownish, very thick tan head forms, quite rocky, settles down to a thick layer and ring, great retention, some lace spots stick to the glass.

Smell is nice, very roast, some chocolate wafer and biscuit, toasty, lightly fruity, a touch of raisin and some caramel sweetness, a bit of brown sugar, balcned roastiness thats quite nice.

Taste is similar, very roasty up front, wafer and biscuit, toffee/caramel, a bit of brown sugar sweetness, some dark fruit, chocolate and dry cocoa powder, nice dry roasty finish.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with medium carbonation. Very smooth and drinkable, a nice beer.

A - Pours a nice thumb of head, which dissipated slowly to islands with a little lacing. Bubbles were vibrant and large, though the beer was not visibly carbonated. Poured a dark dark ruby red which was very appealing.

S - Dark mocha chocolate, with a bit of a sweet vanilla toffee scent on the finish.

T - Rich chocolate with an espresso bitterness present. The dark malt cocoa flavour is predominant, however it leaves a bitter metallic coffee aftertaste. That being said, the aftertaste is a bitter sweet finish, which is quite nice.

M - Surprisingly light on the tongue, and is foams up nicely on the swallow. Thought it would have a thicker feel, but was surprised by this one!

D - To say it is very drinkable is an understatement. If you're looking for a bold dark beer with character, this is the one for you. Would recommend this to any of my friends that appreciate a bold flavourful beer. If you prefer to drink your coffee black without any additives, this is the equivalent of a bold cup! Delicieux!!

Picked this as part of the Les Trois Mousquetaires mix pack in Quebec.

A : A nice dark color with a beautiful three fingers creamy brown head. Look very appealing and looking forward this taste this one.

S : I smell a roasted coffee aroma right off, maybe also some woody character.

T : Dark chocolate feel with just enough bitterness. Touch of coffee toward the end

M : Very fluid and light body, not as thick I one could expect when pouring, carbonation is good

D : Very drinkable, I'd grab another any time.

A Black Lager as the Label States.

Smell - mild roasted coffee with nutts. Very creamy smell.

Taste - Light coffee, chocolate with a hint of bitterness. Very smooth and not overpowering. Almost like a light porter. A little honey and vanilla in there as well.

I like this one, could drink a few for sure. Enjoyable.

I enjoyed this in a pint glass and allowed it to warm for approximately 10 minutes out of the fridge. An excellent example of the style. Minimal lacing and head. Distinctive chocolate and caramel notes. Wonderful as a dessert beer to pair with dark chocolate, dates, figs or spiced nuts.

Some have suggested it as a session beer but I'm not sure that I would want more than two bottles of it at a sitting. I whole-heartedly recommend you try it. Cheers

A : Pours a nice opaque black beer topped with compact beige head. Retention and lacing is medium.

S: Hum, interesting. Definitely can smell that ther seems to be good hops work in te recipe but the predominant smell is really the torefaction one.

T: Good! Reminds of fresh ground coffee and roasted nuts also. A good bitter taste but not to overpowering.

M : Light really but I guess that's alright for the style aimed.

D: Excellent. Not a so special beer, but a good localy brewed beer with flavor. That's a keeper in the fridge for these moments.

Tasted on May 26th, 2009.

Pours dark black color with a brown head... nice. The head disappear quickly with no lacing on the glass.

Aroma: Chocolate with some roasted malts.
Taste: Bitterness right in front with some chocolate taste at the end. Very nice taste.
Mouthfeel is thin but I find this beer to be rich.
Drinkability: Awesome... so easy to drink gotta watch yourself...

This beer I should get more often.

341ml bottle poured into pint glass dec21 2009

A not quite black with two fingers of fast falling tan head that left lace where the foam existed

S dark roasted coffee grinds with some mild chocolate

T again coffee and chocolate are very apparent but I also pick up on some nuts, I was enjoying this one from start to finish

M a little thin but the heavy carbonation helps to give it a creamy feel, and at the end of the day it's a lager and I shouldn't expect it to be as thick as the color would imply

D very easy drinking, looks like a stout drinks like a light beer, not to heavy but still has lots of flavor.

ya I was liking this beer with out doubt, I like the black lagers and this is a good one with little doubt.

A: Dark brown body with a tan-coloured thick foamy head. The bubbles are very visible at first.

S: Overroasted malts, with hints of chocolate, coffee, and, of course, hops.

T: Starts out with a roasted coffee bean flavour, going into moderate hoppiness, then finishing with a nice chocolate and coffee after-taste.

M: Nice, robust and roasted. The carbonation is moderate, despite the initial appearance.

D: Quite drinkable, although some people may find the roastiness a bit coarse. A proper dark lager, in my opinion!
