With the yeast pour, LTM's weizenbock pours a cloudy russet brown body beneath an initially foamy head of yellowed off-white that slowly settles into a creamy cap. Prior to the yeast it's mainly clear, and to my eye more attractive, but the yeast softens and rounds the flavor a bit so I prefer it that was.

The aroma offers golden caramel, medium caramel, and dark caramel with a combination of both red and dark fruits.

In the mouth it's full to medium-full in body with a dextrinous edge, and gently bristling then creamy with a fine-bubbled, slightly above standard level carbonation.

The flavor follows suit, and although the initial sips are dominated by a rich caramel maltiness, the dark and red fruits (and some green banana) emerge once the palate has adjusted. Some minor leafy and floral hops can be found in the background but it's really about the rich caramelish malt and the Bavarian yeast. It's not particularly bitter, but the spiciness of the yeast, and perhaps its 10.5% ABV lend a hand in drying the finish.

Although it meets the BJCP guidelines for a Weizenbock in terms of bitterness and color, the starting gravity, final gravity, and subsequent ABV are all higher. It's really more of a 'barley wine-esque' Weizenbock that's deserving of sipping status. I enjoyed it while preparing to grill in the backyard mid-summer, but I also thought it would be great with a good book an a cold winters night. Regardless of when you drink it, it's exceptional!

Rusty copper body, medium haze, small head that fades to nil. Sweet, boozy aroma. Sticky, syrupy, malty body. A few years of age has added some caramel candy and basement notes.

Thoroughly enjoyed from the 750 ml bottle in a snifter. This fine weizenbock pours glowing reddish brown with a nice head of tan foam that settles to a thick ring, thin layer, and modest lacing. Nose of raisins, plums, and heavy brown sugars. Flavors exceed the nose with heavy brown sugars and sweet plums on all sides that fade to a raisin and light vanilla and cherry note with a dose of heavy yeasty bread. Sweet, coating, and moderately light carbonation is slick and delicious for the malt bomb lovers out there with a boozy warmth that is most excellent.

Veiled copper color with a powerful amount of glass clinging activity. Creamy and frothy beige 2 finger sparkling head, lasting around 10 to 15 minutes, with a good amount of legs.

Aromas of fresh flowers, estery fruits, with a barrel aged feel. Flavors of apple, alcohol, grapes, dark berries, smoky oak, maple or honey, floral and herbal spices. Thick fruity sugary feel with minimum sharpness yet highly bitter spicy. Wine and cider like.

Slick full body with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very strong finish with lingering banana yeast, an oak barrel aged feel, a thick fruity spicy tongue coat, and a strong throat burning alcohol feel.

Overall good quality craft. Fully flavored and good taste, while overly vinous and sugary. Very heavy and warming with low freshness. Overly spicy, boozy, and acidic. Not very accessible but ideal for appetizers and as a desert.

Note: 1 year vintage with at 10.5% instead of 11%.

L: A pale brown color which hints more towards ruby red. Hazlenut. Initially rather clear but hazed up as the sediment was poured. One finger head with mild retention and little lacing.

S: The cork even gave off a strong alcohol aroma. Alcohol is fairly strong. Sweet, dark, caramelized fruit. A faint hint of bread.

T: Alcohol, while strong on the nose, is hidden well in the sip. Lots of dark fruit. Pronounced date and maybe a bit of fig. A bit bready. Rather chocolate-like as well. Not that much banana and clove is laid back - perhaps a product of 1 year's aging? Pretty complex. Definetely on the sweeter side but not sickly.

F: Mild carbonation. Pretty viscous overall but to be accepted given the high ABV. Leaves sticky lips and is pretty dense.

O: Great beer overall. I would consider buying some of this again. Despite the higher ABV and desert beer preconception of Weizenbock this went great with ham on a fall evening. Gently warming and very complex. May revisit this one Halloween night!

This review is for the 2011 vintage.

On initial pour, not much head but a good amount of sediment. Looks rich and thick. Pours a dirty pale copper color. Held up to light a light ruby red is revealed in deeper parts, with a fiery orange in the shallower parts of the glass.

Smells of fruits - cherries, fresh cut pears, and faint banana. Bready yeast and toffee is present as well. Smell overall is somewhat muted, perhaps from the 2011 vintage.

Taste is as it smells plus a large amount of sweetness, more than I'd have guessed from the nose and 10%abv.

Mouthfeel is light with the fruits but the alcohol and toffee, and overbearing sweetness weigh it down. No carbonation to speak of.

Finish is not particularly enjoyable; lingering flavors from the taste but nothing new or worth dwelling upon.

Overall not a bad offering but one I didn't particularly enjoy. To me it tastes like a fruity version of a Gulden Draak (a beer I love) that is starting to go bad.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into an Allagash cervoise glass.

A: Nice head; deep brown colour.

S: Super sweet. Loads of malt. Sugars. Candied fruit. Hint of tart fruit intrigues me.

T: My god. This is just dripping with syrup -- mostly maple, some demerara. Caramelized sugars. Distant, distant stewed plums, apples, and spice. There is an undertone of wheat, but it's hard to discern.

M: Robust, thick, and sticky.

O: An enjoyable experience, but not an oft-repeatable one. Would recommend to fans of weizenbocks.

A: The beer is hazy amber brown in color. It poured with a half finger high beige head that died down, leaving wispy lacing on the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of dark fruits and bananas are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, but the dark fruit flavors are stronger and provide notes of plums and prunes. No alcohol is perceptible.
M: It feels just about being medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer does a very good job managing to hide its alcohol from the taste. It is a very tasty weizenbock.

No sign of a bottle date. I assume this to be a couple months old, tops.

A: Pours a nice mahogany with a tall, frothy light brown head. Head fades slowly with great retention. Splotchy lacing.

S: Lots of sweet malts. Thick, liquid bread. Heavy caramel and dark fruits. Brown sugar. Pretty typical of what you'd expect from a weizenbock.

T: Big, big dark fruits up front. Raisins, grapes, fig, pomegranate and some berries even. Really nice fruit flavors. Heavy bread in the middle and finish. Sort of a bitter, dusty graininess in the finish and aftertaste. Maybe signs of oxidation?

M: Fairly heavy, very smooth.

O: A nice malty weizenbock for sure. The highlight here is all of the dark fruit flavors. Really bright, bold and tasty. Great sweetness and smoothness too. Drinkability is high. Light signs of oxidation in the finish (or just some odd flavors?) but it doesn't detract TOO much.

Appearance: Reddish brown color on pour, hazy and opaque. Head and carbonation are minimal but come in pale white.

Aroma: Mild aroma of currant. Certainly fruity but not overpowering.

Taste: Boozy above anything else. Significant fruit notes, but also highly medicinal. Incredibly busy and easily overwhelming. It attacks your mouth.

Mouthfeel: Incredibly warming owing to the high alcohol concentration. Impossible to ignore.

Overall: This beer is not for the faint of heart and it's probably best if you have someone to share it with. An entire 650ml bottle is not for everyone. I did not enjoy it but you well might.

Reddish with a bit of haze and a short cap of fine beige bubbles. Banana and cotton candy aroma, caramel, grain, and dried fruit. Pretty much the same in the flavour, grain and banana with dried fruit and caramel sweetness. Faint roasted character and a bit of alcohol warmth/flavour in the finish. A bit cleaner than I expected. Full bodied with low carbonation. I liked it. Well balanced for a big beer.

A nice brown color with a head that dissipated quickly. I smell something, I think fruit like fig. The taste is rich: fruit, a little malt. I don't notice any hops, which is OK, instead I get a little spiciness though I can't pin down the spice. I don't pick up anything I'd associate with wheat, the fruit flavors dominate. Overall, it's a tasty beer.

Purchased a bottle a while back four something just under $10. Served chilled into a pint glass (unfortunately). Advertised as 10.5% ABV.

Appearance - Hazy amber brown with red hues. 1 finger of white head is poured and dissipates fairly quick. Looks good, but non-descript overall.

Smell - Boozy, sweet dark fruits. Some caramel and sweet baking. the beer closest to this that I've had in terms of smell is Samichlaus, which may or may not be good for your tastes. I personally find the aroma pleasant.

Taste - Smooth, rich with cherries and plums. Some booze and lightly burnt sugar. Christmas baking in your mouth here. Not too intense and some ripe banana flavoring harkening this beer back to its wheat beer cousins. Banana is noticeably more prevalent was it warms.

Mouthfeel - A bit thin all things considered for a beer with this much flavor and this much alcohol. While the flavors don't overwhelm like many high ABV brews can, the mouthfeel just doesn't seem right with this one. Very thick and syrupy feeling. However, as this beer warms a bit more (closer to 15 degrees Celsius) as now the weight is a bit lighter and seems perfect with the accompanying flavors. Medium-low in carbonation.

Overall - Very doppelbock-ish to my tastes at the start turning more into a sweet weizenbock as it warms some more.

Appearance: It has a nice deep hazy orange/copper color to it. It has a nice off-white head that dies down somewhat fast and leaves little lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of raisins, sweet caramel, brown sugar, molasses, bready yeast, some banana and faint cloves.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a some dark fruits (mainly raisins), candied sugar, sweet caramel, bready notes, some banana, cloves and wheat.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

Dark toffee brown colour with amber highlights. One inch beige head that quickly disappeared to a ring around the glass. No lacking.

Smells of yeast and alcohol. A strong aroma of apricots and thick cream.

The taste is rich and complex. Grains - barley. Toffee sweet with spices of cinnamon. Buttery. Milk chocolate. Over-ripe sweet fruit - apricots and prunes along with alcohol. Peppery around the edges.

A full mouthfeel. The beer coats the side of the mouth. Sticky sweet. No carbonation.

A rich drink. It is like sipping a fine single malt. Carbonation is really missing here.

Appearance: murky, prune juice brown, w/ orange/red hue when held to light, like a filtered sunset; any head comes and goes quickly

Aroma: toffee, toasted malt, butterscotch, banana; sweet, ripe fruit esters of yeast; captivating all in all

Taste & Mouthfeel: sweet like candy, if it was buttery and full of banana, toffee, and lightly burnt caramel; just a touch of heat from alcohol in the finish; soft & silky mouthfeel a little light on carbonation and somewhat cloying; reminiscent of bananas foster but with a stronger caramel flavour in the finished; hints of apple juice, clove, brown sugar

Overall: pleasant and warm flavours, interesting if not of incredible variety, but the sweetness is a little too much and needs to be cut by something, more carbonation might even help; definitely worth a try, but maybe not a return visit

Winter 2011 into tumbler.
Another fantastic CanBIF box entry.

Dark, muddled sweet tea color. Half finger, tight bubbled, light tan head. Lacing is minimal.

Sweet raisins, caramel, toffee, short bread, some plums and a touch of cinnamon and vanilla.

Caramel, toffee, some burnt toast, brown sugar and vanilla. Slightly cloying but not too bad. Raisins and some prunes. There is a digestive cookie and sour dough bread influence in there also.

Light to medium body, slightly syrupy, low carbonation.

750ml bottle poured into a weizen glass. Vintage 2011.

A: Beautiful reddish-brown color. Slightly hazy. The huge, creamy off-white head holds tinges of a cinnamon color within it. Retention is great, and a few stubborn patches of foamy lacing cling to the glass at random intervals.

S: Sticky caramel and brown molasses. huge candied fruit aroma. Candy apples, prunes, raspberries, dried pineapple, banana chips. Banana bread with walnuts. Slight crust and cocoa. Warm blanket of vanilla and a very mild phenol spice. Great nose.

T: Big tide of fruit. Strong pull of raspberry esters. Currant, prune, and raisin. Coarse wheat taste underneath creates the impression of shredded wheat with raspberries. Caramel. Mild spicy alcohol presence. Hints of sherry. Light tartness. Slight cocoa. Dessert bread. Ghost-like pepper. Sweetish finish with that raspberries and wheat flavor.

M: Thick in body. Rich and full, slightly sticky in the mouth. A downplayed fluffy sensation. Smooth enough. Little to no carbonation leaves the palate wanting. It sits a little too heavily. Very mild alcohol warmth.

O: The complexity that the nose offered was nowhere to be found upon tasting. Curious lack of carbonation. A decent weizenbock. Maybe time just wasn't as kind to it as it should have been.

An excellent sipping beer and a good high-alcohol example of the style.

Bottle pours a hazy and oily amber with decent head; it's an attractive auburn colour when held up to the light. Yeast-forward aroma has wine tones as well as caramelized grains. The flavour is well balanced with good depth, including some light barrel tones; it actually reminds me of a port. The 11% ABV is well hidden until the alcohol warmth in the finish.

A hard and unyielding style, Trois Mousquetaires Weizenbock presents an uncharacteristically cheery tawny face to the world, one that is replete with bubbles as well as a clarity that is highly unusual (but appreciated). The bottom of the bottle may hold sediment, but the first pour is nothing short of gorgeous.

The strain of yeast used is commanding and utilitarian, imparting a musky odor that evokes images of a middles-ages spice route; clove, nutmeg, pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, and who knows what else can be deduced from the piquant and highly seasoned aroma. It's spicy enough to season a steak (provided you don't mind a little bubble gum and bruised banana).

While it contains a spiciness that has my pantry beat, hidden deep within Grand Cuvée is a sweet, fruity maltiness that smacks of cognac, golden raisin, and banana cream pie. Notes of tart lemon, vanilla and bubblegum are also buried in there somewhere, though they're difficult to pry out of the garish pepper and clove-like spice.

Each sip seems to have its own character, though each is characterized as being either fruity or spicy. There's very little cloyingness, as all the sweet fruit notes (banana in particular, though mango and papaya can be tasted) serve only to calm the heavy clove and nutmeg spices. Alcohol is far, far from shy.

No chef's palate could ever conceive of a more diverse beer than a Weizenbock, arguably the strongest, most fruity, spicy style in the world. For such a heavy-duty ale this Trois Mousquetaires beer has a significant claim to the cellar - it's the kind of offering you can sit on for as long as you like, until you're fully prepared for its thundering, forcible presence.

A ruby red pour, a very low if not faint in hops. Malty and sugary this is, and this very much masks the abv content of the brew. Apricot and dates, caramel, grainy, this is a tick taste! The surprising thing about this brew it is strong & surgery in taste, the time at which it leaves the palette is a snap. This is a very drinkable beer, I would recommend only a medium chill.

Bottle I brought to share at mrbubbler's "end of the world" tasting.

2011 vintage.

Pours a hazy brown with a foamy orange-khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, and a variety of dark fruits. Taste is much the same with a distinct grape juice flavor. There is a mild bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

750ml bottle poured into a goblet. ABV 10.5%.

A - Poured a dark murky brown with a 2cm tan head.

S - A big whiff of balsamic vinegar... Yikes! Even with some notes of caramel and dark fruits this beer just doesn't smell good at all. I'm afraid to taste it now.

T - Roasted malts and a big dose of nasty sour with some booze in the finish. A couple gulps in and it's a drainpour.

M - Medium-heavy carbonation, syrupy, finish burns the mouth.

O - If I had aged it for a few years and it had gone bad I probably wouldn't review it. But this one was bottled on Oct 15th 2012 and it already turned bad? Normally strong ales like this can keep for a few years. I'd expect better.

Pours a hazy cherry brown color with a wispy tan head that quickly crackles into obscurity. The aroma is of vanilla, raspberries, cloves and some rummy alcohol. Raisins and crisp wheat notes mix with vanilla pods, a nuttiness and fruity yeast esters in the taste. A warming alcohol is ever-present and gets more prominent in the finish. Hops are restrained in the background, earthy. Bitterness is light. The mouthfeel is thick and nearly viscous with a spritzy carbonation. The finish is boozy and quite malty.

This is a passable Weizonbock at best. Too sweet for me. Also the alcohol could be better hidden, or reduced more realistically. Worth a try but there are better ones out there.
