Style: Baltic Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Robust dark lager inspired by Porters from around the Baltic Sea region. This beer is luxuriously round with a mild bitterness. The malts contribute flavors of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla. The use of cherry-wood smoked malt provides a subtle hint of smoke.

Poured from fridge temp. Pours jet black with good carbonation. Nose is black currant, cherries, raisins, toasted malts. Taste follows the nose. A quick burst of sweet dark fruit and chocolate. Now getting raspberry, black currant, blackberries, licorice, and vanilla. A very slight bitterness on the back end - like a really dark chocolate. This is incredibly well balanced and smooth. I would easily call this the best I have had of this style. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Absolutely fantastic and highly recommended.

Style is too sweet for my taste but clearly a great one for the style. Intense and no booze - impressive

One year old bottle.
Very round beer. A lot on the dark chocolate, the coffee, the dark berries and some phenolic notes, the mouthfeel is thick. The roasted side of the beer is balanced by the estery notes

750ml bottle poured into Sam Adams pint glass.

Pours perfectly black with one finger of mocha head that leaves a thick sheet of dripping lace as it recedes.

Smells of dark chocolate, black cherry, raisins, dry red wine, leather, coffee grounds, tobacco and rich earthy hops.

Tastes of chocolate covered cherries, sultana raisins rolled in brown sugar, creamed coffee, soft red wine, smoky ash and more soft earth.

Feels big and rich. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Finishes sweet.

Verdict: Vigorously recommended. A massive, insanely rich beer.

From the corked, caged 750 ml. bottle. Sampled on February 18, 2017.

Jet black pour under a long lasting silky tan head. Lacing.

The aroma is sweet roasted dark malts, rich caramel, char, cream or milk, plum, and a low hop profile. No alcohol given its 10% ABV.

The body is bold, smooth, warming, and full.

The taste is dark and roasted, boisterous in its sweetness, slightly burnt, earthy, and no booze to speak of. The bitterness is mild and tolerable at the end. This is a dynamite Baltic Porter. Oh Canada!

Serving: Bottle
Bottled: Jan-7-2016 (consumed Dec. 16th)

A:
Pours a ruby-tinged pitch black with ample creamy mocha head. Settles to an active film leaving wavy lacing behind, relatively easy to rouse. (4.25)

S:
Fruity old leather and rusty buckles, toasted nuttiness and some coffee-like roast character. (4.25)

T:
Smooth dark fruit sweetness with an underlying creamy roast malt support that never quite takes center stage, some coffee flavor, tobacco, but mainly bold earthy berries on a grill. (4.25)

M:
Smooth, sweet, weak carbonation, medium plus body, well-hidden alcohol. (4)

O:
I'm surprised I've never reviewed this one. I have had it a few times and it is definitely a solid beer.
It looks nice enough with a nice fluffy head. The aroma and flavor are both like blackberry-infused mocha coffee. It is a little too sweet for my personal tastes but is a good interpretation of the style and an excellent beer all around.
A true québécois classic. (4.25)

Draft served in a tulip.
Poured dark black with solid tan head that dissipated to a lacey ring. Aroma of coffee and dark roasted malts with som chocolate. Taste is divine. Luxurious coffee flavour, charred wood and chocolate. Silky thick and rich mouth feel. Overall a great dark beer for the winter months.

Dark brown with a ruby tinge, and muddy with cloudiness, its topped with a half finger of creamy dark beige head. No visible carbonation.

Smells of coffee, cocoa, hints of bourbon, licorice and molasses. Hints of cherries.

Creamy coffee notes, hot chocolate, it has a sweetness, and hints of cherry.

Medium, thick body, with moderate, slightly foamy, carbonation.

I was stoked to find this one in St. Jerome, at a bottle shop, late at night. I was looking for the Ceil Dieux in the wrong place and instead found this. This brew was on my hit list for my visit to Canada, being proclaimed as one of our country’s best brews. Drank in Stouffville, ON, Oct 15th, 2016.

Pours black with a thin tan head that was fairly well retained and left some lacing. Smell is fantastic-dominated by semi-sweet chocolate and roasted malts with notes of caramel, coffee, nuts and bourbon. Taste follows the nose with the addition of dark fruits, vanilla and sweet cream. The 10% ABV is quite noticeable in the best way possible. Medium bodied and lightly carbonated and a creamy mouth feel. Outstanding beer.
