Sort of a typical DIPA cloudy orange/gold with a half finger of white foam that melts to leave lots of sticky lacing.

Aroma is all about the hops...citrus peel and pink grapefruit sweetness.

Taste is sweet pale malt (a little too sweet) that blends and gets ultimately buried by the citrus peel hops. Hops taste very fresh and clean. Malts are just a tad too sweet for me.

Aftertaste is bitter hops.

A thin and slowly receding head is off-white/light beige. The body is hazy amber orange. Overall this is fairly standard but appealing. The nose is boldly citric, grapefruit dominating. Orange, pine, sugar and hints of guava jam highlight the majority of the remainder. There is a signifigant amount of moderately toasted grains and caramel with an artificial twang. The aroma, overall, is average but very enjoyable and easygoing. Astringency is mild in the flavor, thankfully - aroma indicated it could go either way. Hops are medium-high strength and vary in potency and varietal expression throughout each sip. Lightly caramelized and toasty malts linger in a spicy hoppy finish. The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, heavily but evenly carbonated and relatively smooth. An enjoyable and admirable interpretation.

Pours an opaque orange brown amber color with a very lightcream color head that sticks to the sides of the glass.

Aroma is predominantly caramel and brown sugar with some astringency. Reading the bottle, I should be getting floral hoppiness in the bouquet which tells me this bottle has most likely peaked and is on the downside. The hops in the nose are minimal citric hints, possibly orange.

Taste is spicey malts with orange and caramel, some lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel is very smooth and finishes semi dry.

To sum it all up, this beer has peaked, the hops have faded, and the malts dominate, it's basically a skeleton of what it once was. From what I'm getting on the palate, I'm sure this was pretty good when it was fresh. Honestly, I probably shouldn't be reviewing this beer in its present state.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine Volume II, Issue II:

Hopped continuously throughout the entire boil, with hop additions made every three minutes and increased by 100 grams with every new addition. Hold on. If the boil was, say, for one hour, wouldn't they want to call it "2,000 Gram?" Okay, enough geekin' out.

Hazy orange-amber with a tight, creamy foam head with lots of leg. Pungent, purfumey citric oil with a floral note that tears you up and massive orange character. Solid medium body, and the smoothness has some depth with a creamy mouthfeel. Massive bitterness, though it never becomes too sharp, big orange peel flavors. Hop flavors are off the hook, incredibly dense and resiny. Some mint, soft oily pine, earth and then more orange peel. Floral honey. Bone-dry finish with a ton of resin and ash in the linger.

Alcohol is well-hidden in this intensely orange hop bomb, which is not as insanely bitter as loyal followers of the style might be accustomed to, but man is it packed with a hop flavor that pummels the palate into submission.

Another example a smooth. Smell was honey and hops. Taste was about the same with a sweet taste that becomes more intensely bitter the more you sip of it. Somewhat smooth and creamy, medium body. For such a strong beer it goes down easy making it one I could drink all evening long.

A half liter bottle poured into a nonic pint glass. The ale appears a hazed medium amber color with about two fingers of lingering off white head. Nose and flavor consist of resinous pine, lots of caramelized malt sweetness, medium toasted bread grains, floral and earthy. Decent body and carbonation. Crisp, bitter finish. Not bad overall.

Got this in the Secret Bunny BIF. No discernible freshness date - think it might be a little older. Served in my Kuhnhenn tulip.

A - Two fingers of quick-dissolving dirty blonde foam that leaves a bit of spotty lacing. Hazed dark apple cider orange-brown color that looks nice when held to the light.

S - Definitely a little older - still a decent amount of tropical and citrus hops, some pine, and lots of caramel and brown sugar malt character.

T - Burnt sugar, bread, caramel, a hint of grapefruit and pine. A touch of alcohol and a slightly odd plastic aftertaste. This is really in barleywine territory at this point, but there's still a fair amount of residual bitterness.

M - Soft, active carbonation, dry finish with some residual sugars and stickiness. Medium body.

D - At this point 22oz is way too much for me to drink on my own. I strongly considered not even bothering to review this, but I have no idea if/when it will be made again after Christian's exit from Ølfabrikken. Wish these guys put dates on the bottle...

Thanks to PSYCOHOPS for this bottle.

Poured from the bottle like a deep and cloudy apple cider with a large-bubbled, rich off-white head.

Big, sharp aroma of pineapple, grapefruit, pine, and malt.

Tastes of hoppy grapefruit, strawberry, and pine. For balance, there's good amount of hearty caramel malts. Bitterness noted in the finish plus mentholated cough drop coming thru. I've never noted that taste that before.

Medium-to-full bodied, thick and syrupy, and moderately carbonated.

This IPA is a big, rich, hoppy beer. I like it, but it might be a bit much for many. Definitely worthy of a try if you get the chance.

Pours a hazy copper with a thin head. Decent lacing.

Big fruity hop-head nose. There's a lot of promise in here.

Hits the tongue a little sour, then turns fruity-tart with the bitters kicking in late. The aftertaste is very dry, with a slight burnt mustiness to the finish. Somewhere in the middle the beer doesn't feel like it's quite polished and could have used a little more aging.

I wanted to like this one more based on the nose, but the taste just didn't quite pull it off.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy apricot nectar color with a rocky head that leaves a few dots here and there

Smell: Despite the age, the piney bitterness still persists in the aroma but the sugary caramel malt dominates

Taste: Starts out with a lot of caramel sweetness, but the piney bitterness builds by mid-palate, when it is joined by a bready, wheat element; the sugary sweetness, however, begins to dominate after the swallow, even though the 100 IBUs make a frantic attempt to assault the tastebuds

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, almost syrupy, with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: As interesting approach to a DIPA, with added sugar and wheat malt, and while I like the bready flavor the wheat provides as a bit of a differentiator, I think the sugar was a mistake; perhaps it helped when the beer was younger, but at this point, with some of the hop power faded, it is a distraction that makes for a cloying concoction

Reviewed on 10/15/08. Bottle. Pours a hazy dirty orange with a small light tan head. Aroma of bitter hops, sweet caramel malt, and dark fruits. Flavor of brown sugar with an odd vegetal and bitter finish. Definitely a strong beer with a slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Not bad though and it probably was better fresh, but it's still pretty good somewhat aged.

Golden color with a white head and some lacing. Smells of pineapple, orange, and some other tropical aromas. Taste is much of the same flavors. Medium carbonation and medium bodied with a bitter fiinish. Pretty drinkable, but I don't know that I'll be drinking too much of this.

A Danish West Coast IIPA? Why not. Pours cloudy orange-gold with a frothy white head. Sticky, thick lacing. Aroma of resin, pine, bitter grapefruit, with a little bit of bread dough. Huge, rich flavor. Grapefruit, strawberry-like fruits, and caramel up front with a huge hop bite of resin, lemon, and more grapefruit in the back. In the end, this drinks like a West Coast IIPA with sharper resiny tartness than normal. Loved it.

Pours a dark ruby red color with a slight orange tint and a huge frothy white head that settles into a lacing that lasts throughout. The aroma is all about floral and citrus hops with very subtle malt presence. Intensely bitter up front with a huge chunky citrus mouthful. Nice malt backbone, balancing out the immense hop flavor with a bitter dry finish with a nice touch of alcohol warmth.

Appearance: pours a crystal clear dark orange color with a huge 3"+ fluffy head that lasts a long time. Nice lacing develops.

Smell: grapefruits, pine, and an overall biting bitterness rise from the surface of the glass.

Taste: caramel, some breadiness, huge amounts of pine and grapefruits, some softer orange and honey tones, and hints of alcohol make up one big flavored beer.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Lightly crisp to start, smooth and a bit syrupy and slightly dry at the finish. Aftertaste is very long as the flavors stick to the tongue.

Drinkability: a definite slow sipping beer. Big flavors that keep you interested from start to finish.

Bottle shared via fisherman34- dark orange in colour with fairly significant head. Nose- orange candy and sweet malts. Taste- syrupy, orange and bready caramel malts, not much bitterness left. Quite cloying at this stage of the bottles life. Finishes with some bitterness. Drinkability suffers some due to overall sweetness and thickness of malt. Would likely been quite nice when fresh.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a dark amber color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is full of floral hops, caramelized malts and fruity citrus.

T: The taste has some strong flavors competing for dominance. There's an intense piney hops bitterness that you'd expect from the style. There's a heavy sweetness from flavors of citrus and caramel. There's a hearty malt character and a slight sting of alcohol. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and very crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is sticky.

D: Very flavorful with a good complexity, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, very good representation of style, this is definitely the hop-bomb you look for from a 2IPA. Although there are better ones out there, this beer is worth drinking for a while.

Brownish gray color with plenty of orange. Tall head initially, mostly white with some tanning action as well as an orange tint. Very tight and sticky, great lacing it would appear. A little hazy.

Mild malts, somewhat but not entirely sweet. Tons of hops: going with lots of citrics here. Tangerine jello comes to mind.

While a significant amount of hops have been added to this beer, the malt profile is more than capable of matching up pound for pound. Pretty much a draw, which is certainly an acceptable outcome for the brewer's art, but for my palate I was sort of hoping for a more bitter, pungent flavor.

The alcohol is ever-present and a little sharp, but the bitterness of the hops is plenty to make it feel welcome in this big beer. Specific flavors include pine resin and herbal pungency, citric fruit zest, especially oranges and tangerines. On the malt side there is a toasted quality to an otherwise very caramel sweet base. I was very interested to note that not only Wheat Malt is listed as an ingredient, but Sugar as well, which seems unnecessary to me. I wish I could try this beer without the sugar, sacrificing some of the lush, full body for a little more taste bud massacre.

If you prefer American barleywines to double IPAs, try this one on for size. If your idea of balanced consists of an APA's worth of malt loaded up with a truckload of the highest alpha acid hops you can find, look elsewhere because this one takes a more macro view on what Double IPA means. The guide on the back certainly doesn't lie when it puts Bitter at 5/5 and Sweet at 3/5, but plenty of other ale are willing to extend that range a bit. Delicious, interesting, and expensive.
