CAN: .5L. Aluminum. Standard pull-tab. Purchased at a Sale supermarket in Kuopio, Finland. Best before: 14/09/15.
Reviewed live as a wheat ale per Olvi's website. Expectations are above average. Served cold into a mason jar.
4.70% ABV. 41 kcal/100ml. 14 EBU. 8 EBC. Unpasteurised.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
APPEARANCE: Average white-coloured head with above average frothiness and audible fizziness. Recedes fully within ~4 minutes, leaving no lacing.
Body colour is a a clear dull yellow-copper. No yeast or sediment is visible.
Looks pretty generic for a wheat ale.
AROMA: Clean wheat. Clove. Faint banana. Barley.
Aromatic intensity is average. Suggests a pleasant albeit simple and shallow wheat ale with kristallweizen leanings.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Has a pleasantly soft wheat backbone which is complemented nicely by some Bavarian yeast notes - including clove and banana.
The soft mouthfeel isn't quite as soft as would be ideal, but it's nice for a macrobrew. Smooth, wet, and somewhat comforting. The dire overcarbonation is problematic. Medium-bodied and unrefreshing.
It does suffer from a metallic off-note, as well as some cheap barley sweetness on the back end. No, it's not impressively complex or subtly executed, and it's gestalt or perfectly balanced, but the mouthfeel suits the taste and I like it.
OVERALL: You could do far worse for a macrobrewed wheat ale (in any country). This is worthwhile at its low price point, but won't impress the discerning drinker. Worth trying when in Finland, if only for its affordability and simple appeal. I'll enjoy finishing the can in spite of its many flaws and sharp overcarbonation. It does taste cheap, but it's not unenjoyable.
