Inspired by the mighty brewing styles of 18th century London, Rascal London Porter is piquant with spicy aroma and sumptuous mocha flavours silky on the palate with a complex, mellow finish. There’s mischief lurking in the embers of its dark mahogany depths.

Deep mahogany brown. It's pale tan head is small, but tight and retentive, and leaves behind a sheet of lace. It smells of prunes, dark chocolate, and molasses. Cocoa powder up front, followed by dried fruit and a touch of treacle sweetness in the mid-palate. Dark roast coffee in the bitter finish. A little bit shy of medium-bodied, and finely carbonated. I would have enjoyed a bit more weight to it, but it's not a deal breaker by any means either. Leaves the mouth feeling a little bit slick between sips. Nice beer,

The Jolly Judge in Edinburgh.
Very dark brown with a thin creamy head.
A rich aroma of both hops and toasted malt.
Chocolate and light treacle taste.
Just the job on a cold February day in Scotland's capital city.

Bottle: Poured a black color porter with a nice brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of black chocolate notes with some roasted malt notes and light residual sugar notes. Taste is also a mix of residual sugar notes with some black chocolate notes and light residuals sugar notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Solid take on the style.

Rascal London porter pours a deep deep brown with a thumb and a half of head. The head breaks relatively fast, and as you go through the drink there is some fine lacing. The smell of this beer is chocolate, roasts and treacle, the combination is quite appealing. The taste follows the nose with the chocolate, there is a mild coffee or mocha taste and I found the treacle flavors nicely rounded the palate. Feel is medium to thin, carbonation is quite prickly and there is a bit of an oilyness there too. Overall, this was a nice beer, the nose really drew me in and left me happy with my selection.

330 ml bottle served cold into a tulip. Purchased from the LCBO for around $3.50 CDN.
Appearance - dark chestnut brown coloured beer capped with three quarter finger of light tan head. Good retention and plenty of spidery lacing left behind. Carbonation isn't visible due to the lack of light coming through the glass.
Smell - a fairly complex porter. Hints of coffee and orchard fruit initially but there's also a molasses and butterscotch combo that provides some substance. In the end a near mocha aroma fills the nostrils. Treacle too. To me the nose is something pretty special.
Taste - coffee, mineral water, earthy hops and more damp coffee grounds. Traces of vanilla and butterscotch but not nearly as prominent as the nose. Pretty good but wish the butterscotch and treacle or molasses taste would shine through. A certain liquorice flavor too, but subdued and doesn't come through nice and sharp.
Mouthfeel - smooth with a medium heavy body but a light texture in the mouth. Modest carbonation and a slightly drying finish.
Overall - a petty good porter with a unique and spectacular nose. Certainly a beer worth enjoying and one of the best smelling porters I've ever encountered. A fine quaff.

330 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before Jan 2018 and served at cellar temperature.
Pours a dark chestnut-copper colour with visible clarity when held to the light; this also causes the liquid to reveal its beautiful deep, reddish-burgundy hues. 1.5 fingers of frothy, light beige-tinged head seeps off over the next couple of minutes, splattering some seafoam lace onto the sides while fading to a foamy, bubbly cap and collar. Dark chocolate, cocoa, mocha, treacle and prunes on the nose, with added notes of date, toasted nuts and some herbal, earthy hints of licorice. Quite appealing.
Well done. Toasted bread and nuts, with lots of chocolate/cocoa flavour supplemented by some caffè mocha, followed up with prune and date. Some molasses and caramel sweetness throughout the first half of the sip, but it gets pushed aside by some roasty bitterness and earthy, herbal hop notes and a touch of licorice. Bittersweet aftertaste. Medium-light bodied, with mild carbonation and a smooth, soft, somewhat slick texture that coats the tongue. Superbly drinkable; definitely a pretty good English porter, but "great" is a matter of debate.
Final Grade: 3.98, a B+. Rascal London Porter is a fine Scottish brew that I would happily drink again. I sampled this right after a can of Fuller's London Porter for comparison's sake, and found this one to be much more assertive in terms of bitter, roasty character - but not as well-balanced or as delectably tasty as the aforementioned competitor. This is one of those beers that is nice to try - I mean, there aren't all that many Scottish craft imports here, and more variety is always welcome - but it probably isn't going to blow your mind or unseat your favourite example of this style. Still, it's a solid, properly-made porter that I'd recommend for a tipple or two.

A: The beer looks like a stout and is black when viewed from afar, but when held up to a bright light there are traces of dark reddish brown hues near the bottom of the glass. It poured with a short off white head that died down, leaving a patch of large bubbles in the center of the glass, a narrow collar around the edge, and some delicate lacing on the surface in between.
S: Light to aromas of chocolate malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and is dominated by flavors of chocolate malts along with some hints of coffee cola. Neither sweetness nor bitterness is perceptible.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and rather smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is rather complex for a porter and almost seems like a "lite" version of an oyster stout.

Poured from bottle into tulip, minimal tan colored head that recedes quickly. Dark brown/black in the glass, little or no light is passing thru. Smells of roasted malt, chocolate and some faint roasted coffee to the nose. Taste is initially roasted malt with a slight bitterness and smooths out into some chocolate in the middle, very mild non bitter finish. Good mouthfeel, solid porter.
