LABCO is the saving grace of Manhattan, Kansas as far as I'm concerned. The quality of their beer is very good, and the brewmaster John continues to be innovative with his brewing. The Prairie Pale Ale (more of an IPA) is my favorite. The bitterness is assertive yet balanced and clean. The other brews include: Bison brown ale, Pony Express Porter, XX Black Angus Stout, Rileys Red Ale, Wildcat Wheat and a tasty seasonal. The service is laid back but effective and the atmosphere is the epitomy of a brewpub. Stop by on your way to Colorado. Or California.

This place isnt bad. They have good food, a little on the higher side for price. Im not a huge fan of their beer, they are not a huge place or anything however, i feel that their beer is more aimed at satisfying the masses with your typical wheat red brown and pale ales, as a huge fan of more intense craft brews it just didnt satisfy me on the beer side of things.

LABCo is practically a Manhattan, KS landmark now. This is usually everyone's first dinner suggestion to out of town visitors, and rightfully so. I think the food is better quality than the beer, but that's alright because the food is pretty damn good.

The building is decorated in the very masculine , thick wood, old Western steak house feel. In the bar area, immediately to your right when you walk in, is a set of tables and a long bartop. Behind the bar are a bunch of old cans and a few empty bottles of craft beer that isn't available at the restaurant, and up on hooks are the ceramic LABCo mugs of the regular visitors. You can look through the glass there and see the fermenters in the small brewhouse next door.

The staff are usually very friendly, accommodating to large groups. I've been maybe 10 times, for both casual and professional meals, and I've never had poor service. Occasionally the kitchen gets backed up because it is a very busy restaurant. LABCo has branded itself on only using certified Angus beef, which some people believe carries a lot of value. Their steaks are very good but a tad pricey for an everyday meal. Their signature steak, the KC Strip, will run you about $40 dollars. Other meals like the burgers, steak salads, and fish & chips are all very good.

LABCo's year round beers are all slightly above average for a brewpub (if that makes sense). Their Black Angus stout is one of their better offerings because it's served on nitro, their Riley's Red is also not bad. I have always been disappointed, however, with some of their seasonal offerings. It's a gamble. Their Oktoberfest is sort of eggy, their Sod House porter was kinda dull, and their recent IPA was unbalanced.

Still, it's definitely a must visit Manhattan location, I suggest going on $2.50 pint Mondays.

Particularly good beers here: Prairie Pale Ale and I enjoy Wildcat Wheat. I drink most of the beer here thru my kegerator, it’s a good value if you are looking for handcrafted beer to serve at home. I also enjoy the pumpkin beer- it’s a seasonal.

The staff is friendly, cooperative, and seems to enjoy their work and their regular customers.

I especially enjoy the lunch specials (off the menu), and all manners of the burgers are good.
One of the few places I go and eat a burger and don’t add condiments.

Best place in Manhattan If you are looking for a handcrafted beer.

The full kegs are old school with a wooden bung, and frequently the CO2 will leak out after the beer level goes below the bung (and it dries out). I tried several things and could just never solve that issue so have to buy smaller more expensive brew.

The customer area could use a cleaning, and maybe an update to décor in the bar area and a new floor throughout..

I visited Manhattan for a weekend and when I went to Nespor's Wine & Spirits I realized that this place was in the same strip mall. The place was packed with people waiting outside with their beers hoping to get seated.

Vibe: The place was mostly dim with the entire place covered in wood. I
could only assume that this place is packed all the time.
Quality: Great food with mediocre beers.
Service: Before a concert my friends and I came here again. The wait was a decent 15 minutes. Seating for 6 was no problem. The service is incredible. All of the wait-staff is extremely kind and refilled drinks without us even having to ask. Cooking of the meat was exceptional.
Selection: Their beer lineup was pretty standard with a wheat, pale, stout and and a Brown ale.
I ordered their XX Black Angus Stout and it was extremely mediocre. The beer was served way too cold especially for being a stout.
Food: I had a chef friend with my group and he loved the food. The place serves authentic angus steak. I myself got a 6 oz open face steak sandwich. I strongly recommend their Truffle Fries with their curry ketchup.
Overall: I personally would not come here for their beers, but the food was extremely nice especially for being in a random city in Kansas.

As mentioned before, the Little Apple Brewing Company is located in a strip mall. I actually drove past it several times before I realized where it was. The beers are fairly mediocre... I haven't tried anything here that's outstanding, but it's not horrible either. Service was really good... just like just about anywhere in Kansas. The food was really good. The steaks are especially tasty.... Like a lot of places in the Midwest, you get a lot for your money here. For Manhattan, (K-State and Ft. Riley), this is about as good as you'll do. If I'm in Manhattan again, I'm sure I'll return to the Little Apple....

This place is very odd. As with most small town brewpubs, this place has a bit of everything.

It is located in a strip mall.

It has a hall dining area that reminds me of a VFW.

It has a very eclectic seasonal menu, that was pushed pretty hard by my server.

The wheat beers were very good and the head brewer seems to know what he is doing.

Oh, yeah...did I mention that it looks and feels like a kitchy cowboy steak place?

While the AC didn't seem to be working the day I was in, and the bartender was a bit overzealous, I would highly reccomend this place if you are in the "little apple." Lots of flavor in the beer, food, and folks!

We visited the Little Apple recently while in Manhattan for my wife's graduation from the K-State Master's program. The fact that its in a strip mall and the dining area is very "chain restaurant-y" is why I lowered my atmosphere score, but the atmosphere overall is enjoyable. A small bar but a decent bar area. They have cows hanging by the bar with the names of the beers. My wife and in-laws liked their meals pretty well, but I just shared appetizers with my daughter. Very friendly server and staff. The beers were good, but nothing out of this world. I was partial to the wheat, but bought a growler of the IPA to take to the hotel as that was the selection made by consensus with our group.

In Manhattan it doesn't appear that there are a whole lot of options for beer, and this place would stand up well against competition in other cities, so why wouldn't you dine and drink here if you are in Manhattan, Kansas?

Yep, its in a strip mall BUT it is in the SAME strip mall as the best liquor store in Manhattan (see Nespors).

Atmosphere is cowboy kitsch with some random breweriana scattered about. Big cozy bar with lots of college aged employees hanging out during a slow afternoon.

Quality? Meh. Decent beer, nothing too fancy or out of the ordinary and what I had was nothing to write home about. Ringwood? I'm thinking yes.

Service was fine at the bar. I asked waitress/bartender what was going on in town as I was only in town for a few days for work. She told me "Nothing, there isn't much to do here except get drunk and I am saying that as someone who has lived here their whole life." She was however prompt about bringing my beer and water.

Beer selection is limited to the usuals. Food selection is pub food with a good selection of steaks.

Value is excellent. Pints are $3.50 each and sometimes only $2.50. That is a deal.

I quickly learned that Manhattan, Kansas has two things driving its economy. One is K-State and the other is the military base (Riley). Put them together and you've got a town of 50k with a dozen liquor stores, a ridiculous amount of bars, a brewpub and a brewery. If you like drinking than The Little Apple (the town) is for you.

Atmosphere: Going to this restaurant will really throw you off at first. It's located in a strip mall and doesn't look like much on the outside. However it is much nicer when you go inside and much bigger than it appears. It's decorated with a lot of wood and country-type items.

Quality: I went to Kansas State University which is located in Manhattan, so I have been here numerous times. The food has always been good, and the beer has always been fresh and cold.

Service: The service is always satisfactory.

Selection: I believe they have around 5 of their own beers on tap. Before I became more 'beer educated,' these beers were always some of my favorites. However, since I have started drinking some truly outstanding beers I realize that Little Apple's beers are average, if not below average.

Food: Their food is very good. I've tried several of their steaks and all are great and are cooked exactly as you order them. I have tried several other dishes and those were good as well.

Value: Their steaks are on the pricey side, but everything else is reasonable. I compensated and gave it $$$ overall.

Overall: Little Apple is one of my favorite spots in Manhattan. If you go expect to have some very good food, but don't go expecting to try some outstanding beers. Overall I still like the place a lot.

This is my home Dive and I do like going as there are not that many "pubs" in Manhattan that aren't B-M-L college joints. The service is always great, and the food is good, Angus steak and some other good options too. That said, the beer sucks. I don't understand why the reviews don't give this place lower scores.

All of their beers are too sweet, not ,malty, just sweet-way out of balance. Drink one and you don't feel like another, that is not how I like to role. No aroma, all you smell is sugar, any hop character is lost in the syrupy sweetness. And take it from me if you do manage to drink 3+ beers you wake up with one hell of a hangover that cant just be due to the alcohol.

If you are in Manhattan and looking for somewhere to have a drink, by all means come to the LAB - good food and atmosphere + friendly service! But please don't detour off I70 for this place if you in the market for good beer. I guarantee that if they sold Tall grass (the other micro in town), it would be there best seller!

I never been to Little Apple but I have tried a couple of their beers. I got exactly, beer-wise, what I was expecting: solid, tasty beer.

The atmosphere is kind of saloon meets restaurant meets brewpub set in an older strip mall. I have been to places with this vibe and they both sucked (Murphy's in Hastings, NE and High Noon in Leavenworth, KS). Little Apple was better. Much better.

We sat at the bar; we got there at 11am on a Husker-KSU football game day. I think there were six people in red by the time we left in a see of purple. Everybody was nice, including the staff. There seem to be some kind of KSU football rally or meeting or something. Not to get in a pissing match but it was lame and uninspired but that has nothing to do with the brewpub (it was a cheap shot at KSU fans!)

I tried again the Prairie Pale Ale and it was still nice and hoppy. They had a seasonal "American-style IPA" that was maltier and not as tasty as the year-round offering which I thought was odd. My other half also tried the Stout and she found it okay.

The menu was varied enough, heavy on steaks, burgers and pub grub. I tried a burrito covered in chili and I liked it a lot. My GF had a steak salad which looked bland and she said it was plain. However, we both thought the onion rings were awesome!

I only have a couple negatives:

1. The beer selection was sort of boring but I knew that going in. Not saying the beers they had were bad they just didn't offer much and nothing geeky.

2. The bathrooms were freaking hot. I took a leak and starting sweating.

3. After everything we ordered they asked if we wanted the check. No! I want to drink your beer that is why we sat at the bar! They weren't rude about it; it was just weird they kept asking. Sure, they were busy but there was still room for people to sit and even so, I came there to eat and drink so let me do that.

Still, overall, Little Apple was what I expected; a solid, no-frills brewpub with okay food and decent beer. I'd recommend it if you are ever in Manhattan.

I came here over the thanksgiving holiday with my extended family who works for K-State. As you walk in, there is bar area to the right and restaurant area to the back. It had a tavern feel with the lighting, woodwork and decorations.

They have 5 regular brews and 2 seasonals (Pumpkin and Hop Head IPA). I went for the 6 sampler of beers (5 regulars and 1 seasonal) and got 1 more taster to complete the 7 beers they had on tap. Good choice there. The Prairie Pale Ale and the Bison Brown Ale were my favorites from the regular lineup. The best beer I had though was the Hop Head IPA. It would be nice if that was a regular as well.

The service was good. No problems there. I didn't notice any problems with the order and food received.

Selection ranged from their 7 beers plus maybe 40 other bottles. The 40 bottles had a few macros, but mainly European or American micros. If you didn't like what they had on tap, I'm sure you could have found something in the bottled area.

Apparently the owner of the brewpub has some of the best Angus live stock in the country. I'm not sure if he uses that in his restaurant, but the burger I had was mighty tasty. Burgers were $6.50-$9, I think. They had some entries which were upper $teens and lower $twenties in price.

If you're in the area, I recommend this place. The Hop Head IPA made the visit though. Probably the best place in town for micros other then Old Chicago. Growlers are available at $5 (for the jug) +$7.50. One day of the week they have the fill price at $5. I forget if it was Tuesday or Wednesday.

Finally we made it to Little Apple Brewing Company in Manhattan, KS (“little apple” because it is sister city to the Big Apple…) The folks there greeted Tim right away, and we took seats at the bar. Seven beers were on tap, and they served 10-oz glasses, so Carolyn had a few of those while the Tim and I drank pints.

We all agreed that the best beer there was the Bison Brown Ale. As for the quality of brews at Little Apple, nothing was particularly bad, but nothing drew me to desire a return visit, except the pretty mugs they have for club members. Most memorable was the good music they played in the restroom, so that probably doesn’t say a lot for the place. In addition to the Bison Brown Ale, the other beers we tried were:

Prairie Pale Ale
Riley’s Red Ale
Al’s Little Belgian Blonde
XX Black Angus Stout (on nitro)
We didn’t try the Raspberry Wheat or the Wildcat Wheat.

All in all a nice place if you are in the "Little Apple" but I would not say it is a place to go out of your way for.

Located in a crappy little strip mall, which doesn't bode well. Fortunately, it goes up from here.

The place is larger on the inside than you might believe. It's laid out nicely, with a not-all-that-unusual country decor, with lots of wood, including uneven wood floors.

The food was better than the usual pub fare, ranking more in the mom-and-pop restaurant chain type menu. The place is known for their steaks, and they are apparently good. They're also apparently proud of them, as they are priced somewhat out of line with the rest of the menu items. The steaks would get a $$$$ rating, the rest a $$ rating, so I chose the $$$ as a compromise.

Of course, readers here want to know about the beers. There are five (5) standard taps, and rotating seasonal(s).The five standards are an IPA (called a pale), a brown, an American wheat, a red, and a brown. The seasonal when I visited was another stout, this one apparently a bit of an imperial, but it was hard to say.

Overall, it's definitely a worthwhile place to find. Don't let the strip mall throw you. Go in, enjoy a dinner, drink some decent beers. Worth the 20 minutes drive north of I-70 if you're passing through.

Disappointingly located in a shopping plaza, it turned out to be quite nice nonetheless. Although, we were seated in quite possibly the smallest booth ever created - I can't comment on the rest of the booths, but it was a bit tight and uncomfortable, especially for a table supporting a sampler of beer. It had a good atmosphere, like a small country town bar and restaurant, so not so much like a brewery. The food was great – particularly the spinach-artichoke dip appetizer. I’d say my favorite beer was probably the Bison Brown, although the Riley’s Red was interesting also. It looks as though there may be live music there from time to time. And they had really cheap pint glasses, which is always a plus.

Little Apple Brewing Company is an unassuming establishment on the city's west side, a few miles from the hustle and bustle of the BMC mecca of Aggieville. The decor is clean and simple, with lots of wood and high ceilings. The main dining area sits behind the bar and its collection of booths and tables. The brewing area is behind the bar but is better seen from the dining area.

The taps usually pour XXX Black Angus Stout (my favorite), Prairie Pale Ale (a nice, balanced IPA), Riley's Red Ale, and Bison Brown Ale. The regular brews are solid and reliable. There are a variety of additional seasonals throughout the year.

If you live in town it's probably worth joining the mug club. Forty dollars $40 gets you the current year's custom ceramic mug (to keep at the end of the year). Ask for your number when you come in. They'll pull your mug down from the wall, and you get a bit bigger pour- it holds well over a pint!

There is generally a wait for seating in the dining area, but I've found it's worth it. Steaks are always excellent, the Black Bean and Steak Burrito is one of my favorite selections, and the Black and Bleu salad (with steak, Bleu Cheese) is also very good. Service tends to be very good, although the beer knowledge can vary quite a bit. Little Apple was the first, and perhaps remains the only pub/restaurant in Manhattan to have Chimay as well as a couple other notables.

If you want the college drinking scene, head to the cacophany and crowds of Aggieville. For a nice beer a good meal check out LABCO.

The LAB, as the Little Apple Brewery is called by the locals, is an excellent restaurant that also boasts some spectacular beers. The main focus of the restaurant is probably their Certified Angus Beef, which is excellent.

I had the good fortune of living right across the street from the LAB for three years when I was attending Kansas State. Whenever I visit the LAB, I order the sampler of beers. Their beers are really dang good, I don't remember being disappointed by any of them.

On the weekends, there is usually a fairly long wait to get a table in the restaurant, but sometimes you luck out and can immediately be seated at the bar, which is where the action takes place anyway. I give the LAB a gold star in my book, and whenever I am back in town for a football game I try to stop in to at leat fill up my growler.

Update: Had the Stockyard Scotch Ale--Very good.

The Little Apple Brewery was one of my favorite places to visit while at Kansas State and I never miss it when I return to Manhattan. On my last vist I wasn't disappointed. The meal was good. I had a steak sandwich. They know their beef at the Little Apple. The beers were quite good. The Bison Brown Ale is a nice nutty ale. The Alt wasn't bad, but clearly it wasn't as good as the others I've had. I finished my meal with a Hefeweizen. It was a seasonal brew and it was outstanding. In the past, I've had 3 other Little Apple brews:

Prairie Pale Ale
Wildcat Wheat
XX Black Angus Stout

I found all three to be very good, as well. It's worth a stop at the brewery, especially on a Wildcat gameday.

Atmosphere: It's in a strip mall, but for that, it's a fairly nice place. There was a long wait for a table, so we decided to eat at the bar. I guess that was a bad call, smoke, a funky smell that kept wafting our way, and some regular that stood right behind/next to me with nasal drip/sniff. The whole place was heavy with smoke and packed, on a Monday night!
Quality: All of their beers are pretty good, but none blew me away. Solid craftsmanship, nothing wrong (ok, maybe a touch of DMS in the wheat ale) clean beers.
Service: We were well taken care of, prompt and correct service.
Food: Had the steak and black bean burrito, it was really good. My friends also enjoyed their food.
Value: ok

If you're in town, you're a BA, you're going to visit. If you're driving by, definitely worth a stop.
Suggestions for improvement? Vent all that smoke, deal with the funky smell at the bar.

Driving across the country in December/January pretty much sucks. Now don't get me wrong - I love driving across the US, but when it's consistently below 20 and you've been driving across the Great Divide Basin in Wyoming for hour after hour - seeing nothing but snow and scrubland - it can get a little tedious.

That said, coming into Manhatten, Kansas and going to the Little Apple Brewery for lunch (based on my beloved wife darlinclemintine's recommendation, mind you) was just wonderful.

We got there right about lunch time after staying the night in Goodland and driving the length of Kansas - which by the way is a freakin metropolis after Wyoming. I was starving and we hadn't had a good beer since leaving Seattle.

I was a litte skeptical when we first got there because the brewery is in a strip mall. So I'm thinking to myself - "Kansas? Good Beer? Strip Mall? Hmm - Not so sure about this".

Forget that crap - I love this place.

The decor is very nice, with a definite Western, "We eat lots of charred meat" sort of atmosphere. A big, beautiful wood bar with lots of seating is in the front of the large entry room and back in the back is a nice wide seating area. Very nice looking place. My spirits were up immediately.

So I ordered the sampler without much ado. Again, I was expecting less than great stuff because the lower midwest isn't necessarily famous for great beer (the upper, however...). Man was I surprised. Every single beer I had was good. I had the:

Wildcat Wheat
Prairie Pale Ale
Riley's Red Ale
Bison Brown Ale
and a seasonal Porter that they had on instead of their XX Black Angus Stout. I was sad about missing the stout.

My favorites were definitely the Pale, the Red, and the Porter. They don't sell these in bottles, unfortunately, and since I wasn't equiped at the time to handle a growler in the already-packed car, I didn't get one. Having said that - if I lived anywhere close to here, I'd stop by often. Very good beer.

The food was also excellent. I had a barbeque chicken sandwich (my staple in unfamiliar restaurants) with sweet potato fries. Very good. My wife had some pasta thing, I think. Either way, we were both very impressed with the selection and the quality of the food. I think they gave us free bread as well - which is always nice when you're starving.

If you're anywhere near Manhatten Kansas - especially if you're driving across the country in the bleakness of winter - don't miss the Little Apple.

Located in a strip mall close to a Dillon's grocery store, the outside is less than inspiring, in fact it's sort of shabby. The inside gets better, distressed wood floors, quirky location inspired wall decorations, typical brewpub stuff in front. Where we ate in back was more like a down home cafe than a brewery.

If I felt any qualms about ambience they quickly went away when I found out one of the seasonal offerings was barleywine. Hell, yes! It was quite good and strong. I followed that with their sampler, which was a great deal. 6 five oz. tasters for around $4: that's a steal. Most were very respectable, notably the stout and the pale ale, (more of an IPA with its big hops and higher ABV).

I was celebrating my birthday (30th--dammit, I'm getting old!), and decided to go all out and get the Surf and Turf. The lobster wasn't the best, but the certified black angus steak was. Tender as hell and cooked like I wanted, top notch.

Worth the visit just for the barleywine.
