My brother and I stopped by Tavern & Pool while doing a "just one" circuit around northwest Portland. We ended up nursing our beers (Ruby IPA) as we played pool ($2 each half-hour). This place is smoking, and dank, but a good time. I think we both enjoyed the vibe that reminded us of the 3.2 tavern our grandfather owned when we were kids.

One thing that seemed odd was the fire going in the pot-belly stove near the front door while it was about 70 degrees outside. This place was a good stop for us.

I stopped by this place for dinner and to watch a NBA game with a recomendation for easy access. My server was extremely friendly and eager to answer (or find answers) to any questions. I had some IPA that wasn't a McMs (I can't recall which, but it was quite good- bright and piney), so I can't really comment on the quality of their beers. The selection wasn't huge, but decent- certainly more than I'm used to. Food was good- get the tatortots. Especially if you'd enjoy playing pool, I would recomend this location.

Stopped in for a really quick one on the way to NOL just up the street. Same general theme, same beers, same average service as the other McMen establishments but with more billiards. By the point I made it to Tavern and Pool I was just plain done with McMens but I have to admit, they do a fine job picking locations and decorating. This place is sharp, stylish, well lit, and open. If the beer list were a little more expansive or if McMens beers were a touch more interesting I could hang out here for hours.

Quirky in the McMenamins way, with a not-quite discernable theme of kitsch and 50's Americana, the atmosphere at Tavern & Pool is certainly interesting and comfortable, but a little too much style over substance for my taste...

The waitstaff was quick, beer-knowledgable (moreso than I'd expected), and enthusiastic. A quick mention of our beer roadtrip ensured that we were charged happy-hour prices long after happy hour.

The selection was unexciting - five or so Brit-style ales given relatively mundane PNW treatments. The beers themselves were of entirely average quality. Entirely drinkable and entirely pleasant, but not at all explorative, engaging, or wholly interesting.

Overall, a decent place to have a pint and rest your feet, but overall, there are many finer places to go in this city. Skip it if you're on a tight scheduel. Stay put in New Old Lompoc just down the road...
