You wouldn't tell by the looks that Mexicali is a kind of craft brewery from Mexico, the bottle suggest a local cheap beer. Picked up this dark lager, not really knowing what to expect and there's not that much to say about it either - except that unlike european dark lagers, its taste is quite mild and doesn't have that remarkable lager taste (which is a good point, for me)... It is easy to drink, feels quite pleasant, nothing against it. I do not regret having chosen this one!

L- Dark brown body, filtered. Fluffy off-white head with medium retention.
S- Slightly toasted caramel malts and a bit of corn. Supposedly this does not have corn.
T- Bread, caramel and toasted malts.
F- Medium.
O- I expected worse, but this is a decent cheap beer. Ok.

Brown copper color with a thin beige head with short retention.
Light aroma with notes of chocolate and mild floral hops.
Flavor with notes of caramel malt, some cocoa, Lager yeast, mild spicy and floral hops, minerals, lemon drops and adjunct grains. Somewhat dry aftertaste with a low bitterness.
Light body with good, not overdone, carbonation.
Plain Dark Lager. It lacks malt complexity (especially if they wanted to do a Viennaish Lager), but is easy to drink and goes well with hot days. Adjuncts don’t bother, just made it lighter.

If you see this on the menu in a Mexican restaurant, it's probably your best option.

Poured from a clear 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a brownish/amber color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of bready malts. Taste is malty, somewhat bready, caramel, smooth and easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a tasty beer and a good example of this style.

Pours clear medium dark with a white head. Aroma is sweet caramel with vanilla notes. Taste reinforces the aroma of sweet caramel and lightly roasted malt but with an initial metallic twang. Nutty sweet and devoid of hops. The finish improves and the metallic aspect fades after a couple sips leaving just burnt caramel with a sweet ending. If this was half of what it cost at my local Total Wine store I would definitely pick up a case.

300ml bottle from Lupe Pinto, Glasgow (£1.49):
Murky brown with a thin, white lacing around the brim for a head.

Light and sweet one the nose with a smell mainly consisting of malts and a few caramel notes There is a roasted malts aroma and a bit of fruit in there too.

Light in this department too with a few light fruits and a mix of caramel and roasted malts. There is a bit of toffee and a malty taste with a touch of grain. A pretty basic dark lager really.

Smooth with only a touch of grain on the palate, a bit of fruity sweetness and a crisp finish with fairly strong carbonation.

A very basic dark lager that I wouldn't quite class as a dunkel as it was too light and plain. Everything was fairly light and unobtrusive making it pretty easy to drink but not particularly enjoyable.

Poured into a New Belgium globe. The beer is the deepest of ruby reds, more mahogany really. The light cream colored head dissipates quickly to a wisp. Surprisingly decent lacing. The beer smells skunky, naturally from the clear bottle. Tastes like a malty adjunct lager with a slightly carbonated finish. The mouthfeel is fairly light bodied.

Overall, I'm not sure what i expected from this one, but I suppose on a relative basis, this one isn't any worse than any of the other Mexican lagers out there, but it's not a whole lot better either. Not quite sure why i drank it out of a globe glass, but it probably made the appearance a tad better than it otherwise would have been. Not a fan of the skunked clear bottled beers.

Pours a clear brown with a 1/2 inch fizzy light brown head that settles to a film on the top of the beer. Small dots of lace slide back down into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, and some skunky aromas. Taste is of toasted malt and some caramel flavors. A very mild roasty bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a crisp level of carbonation with a bubbly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty decent beer that I got as part of a sampler pack but not something I would buy on my own.
