Pretty good vibe from this place. Beer is waiting for you right as you enter. New Belgium bikes strewn all over the ceiling. Excellent quality and selection. Belgium section is one of the more extensive selections in town. Plenty to choose from in all aspects. Surprised by their amount of Evil Twin offerings, both large format and in 4 packs. Service was friendly, but I was mostly perusing on my own.

Recommended to me for their sour beer selection, and it was pretty good, though import heavy. Beer area was right up front by the door, a little cramped compared to the rest of the spacious new store. Walls were flanked with reach-in coolers, and a small half aisle of assorted craft and imports. Organization wasn't really a strong suit.

Highlights for me were Fantome Saison, Torn Label Tounge Lash (oddly shelved next to 22's of Bud Light), Boulevard Smokestacks, Defiance Awesomeness, 4 Hands Absence Of Light, and Off Color.

I was looking for some newer local craft stuff (Crane) and they hadn't heard of it at the counter, but a fellow customer schooled them on the lowdown when I asked. A few nice glasses from JP and Grimm in the middle of the store, which I only noticed after checking out since they were far away from the beer selection. Parking lot was worse than the local Walgreens in Chicago, and at a 45 degree angle to boot. Loved the classic neon sign out front. All said and done, they have a good selection but not really all inclusive.

Probably my favorite beer store in KC. Has a solid selection. Was able to get Enjoy By this morning and one of the workers let me know that they had a bottle of Espresso IRS in the back. A few beers were a little old (Wooky Jack 5 months old on the shelf), but it wasn't the norm. A very good selection of local and American craft beer. If you are looking for a great international selection in KC, I would suggest Royal Liquor.

Fair prices. Everything seemed to be about 10% cheaper than a number of other stores around town.

This store in midtown KC is well lit and spacious. The beer section is laid out nicely with different spaces for crafts, imports, seasonals, etc.

The beers in the store were from all over the nation. There was a better selection than what I can find in Springfield, MO, just 3 hrs away. The store was well stocked.

The service was great. We were helped by 2 different people who knew what they were talking about with the beers and who weren't afraid to offer recomendations based on what we were looking at.

Gomer's has been redesigned, so it's time for a new review. The new store is in the same location as the old one, but instead of an old worn down building it's now a new, clean, well lit, spacious store.

The service is perfect. They don't bug you too quickly, but if you ask questions they are available and knowledgeable. The quality is also top-notch, and it seems like the new store has been able to offer a better selection than the old one.

There are mega-stores with a wider selection, but this is my favorite place to go. The mega-stores don't sell their stock as quickly and the beer you get may not be as fresh.

Stopped by here last Saturday on my way to a friend's house in Westport. It's not a big place, but it's my understanding that it is a temporary location until the place next door is done. The beer appears to be well take care of and moves frequently. Service was great. They were proactive, asking me questions and offering good recommendations. The selection is good. KC gets a few thing that I don't get in Columbia. I would love to see a "mix a six" section. Good selection of bombers and 750s. I've love to see more Belgians. Prices are reasonable and in some cases better than I've seen in other stores. It is a good store to check out if you are in the area. I'll definitely be back.

Stopped here on a business trip recently while in KC (following an epic breakfast at Arthur Bryant's). Nice selection of regional and local beers, reasonable prices. Kind of weird layout and only some beers (mostly 6packs) in coolers. Great selection of oddball wines. Staff made themselves available, asked if I was looking for anything. Lots of Boulevard, a handful of others I didn't recognize, decent Belgian selection.

I wouldn't go out of my way but if you're nearby, it's worth a stop. Arthur Bryant's is roughly 5 miles away.

Every time I'm in Kansas City I check out this store. It is conveniently located for those staying near Westport and the Plaza. From the outside it looks a bit small, but they do pack quite a bit of craft beer in there. There is a good amount of cold beer along the back wall. There are some displays with some single bottles as well. About two years ago I found corked and cage La Folie here. Other notables include Boulevard (including Smokestacks), Tallgrass, Great Divide, New Belgium Lips of Faith, and Odell offerings. The prices are pretty reasonable and the staff is helpful.

Gomer's is the best selection in Kansas City proper. The selection is good. They tend to keep some of the better stuff in back or on a reservation list, not a bad thing, but sometimes everything isn't out for you to see. Even if you aren't a regular they are helpful and if you ask, they might have some good stuff for you to try. The store isn't in a rough area of town but not the friendliest, don't worry about that the customers are mostly Plaza and Westport business people. They have moved to a temporary store while the tear down and rebuild the old one. This will hopefully help with the look and feel as well as open up the aisles a little bit. The best beer selection you can find in the city.

Atmosphere: The store is located in a somewhat rough part of town in a small building. It looks like they would carry mostly malt liquor and cheap wine but once entering you realize what a gem this place is.

Quality: The quality of the beer is very good. After shopping here for the last eighteen months I've never encountered an out of date beer.

Service: The service is great. They offer help but are not pushy about it. Mark is an excellent resource for recommendations and the rest of the staff are always friendly.

Selection: The selection is very good considering the lack of space and they rotate in new beers regularly. They get a fair amount of limited releases but do sell out more quickly than some other stores.

Value: Their prices are on par with other stores, some beers are cheaper, some more expensive. They aren't quite as cheap as Lukas but they make up for that in service. They also refuse to mark up the limited releases like some of the stores. When Boulevard Chocolate Ale was selling for $20 at some other stores they had it for $12, the normal price for Boulevard's limited smokestacks.

Quality: All of the beer quality seemed to be good in this store, I definitely didn't see any bottles with dust on them or bottles with sediment layers. I wouldn't expect to find old or outdated bottles here.

Service: Had a nice talk with Mark, and he pointed out a couple local beers that I otherwise wouldn't have looked at. Overall very good.

Quality: I thought the store had awesome selection, probably the best that I have personally seen. Lots of stuff from Founders, Bells, Avery, New Belgium, Great Divide, Odell, Lagunitas, Boulevard of course (especially Smokestacks), and other stuff from smaller Missouri and Kansas breweries. Also a nice selection of Belgian and European beers.

Overall, I would love to have full time access to this store. Very good.

I know KC still does not have a large beer scene, so finding a bottle shop of any value is tough to come by, especially in the city for some reason. Gomer's is old school and situated on a busy corner in kind of a sketchy part of Midtown. The craft beer is tucked away in the back corner with a couple coolers and some shelves dedicated to the brewing art. I can always find some standbys and I hear they carry some special brews as well, although none were present during my visits. This is the kind of place you could probably find a 5yo Chimay Blue or something like that too, although I hear they routinely check through the stock for freshness. I was surprised to find some Bell's Two-Hearted (didn't know they disto-ed in KC!) and went with that, and the shopkeeper was very friendly and really knew his stuff. great services. Turns out this place sells more Bell's than any other place in town, and the manager is quite dedicated to craft beer. Nice to have someone as invested as that running a shop.

Downtown location, KC in all its funky, gritty, and fun splendor. Smaller then the south KC Gomers location, this place packs a punch of quality brew selections within its small confines. The good stuff is wrapped around the real walls and in the cooler units also in the rear. Expect to find the tasty offerings of the Smokestack series from local giant Boulevard, as well as other quality locals, regionals and national good stuff. Friendly staff on the floor and behind the register, always a plus. Easy to reach location, close to other fine beer spots as well as world class BBQ. After buying a few choice bottles here, I fired up the GPS, hit Food/BBQ and the results were stunning....how many quality BBQ places do you have w/in 10 miles?!? KC rocks...that is if you like fine beer and world class BBQ...

I recently visited Gomer's for the first time (due to my research here at BeerAdvocate), and I left there enjoying my experience. Everything I read about the area, and how from the outside of the establishment you'd be shocked how much of a "goldmine" the place is was 100% true. However, you can't judge a book by it's cover, and I'm glad I didn't.

I went in there, and had a list of things I wanted to buy (actually I wanted to see how much of a selection they had). They seemed as disappointed as I was when they did not have those "few" things I asked for. I mentioned the fact that I could not find a Boulevard Double Wide IPA and wondered if they carried it. Not only did the sales rep drop everything he was doing and check for me, but he made the comment "it's not cold", and I said that's better yet (being I wasn't going to open it till I returned home). I also bought SN Bigfoot (boy am I glad I did- savoring it now as I write this), and a couple Samuel Adams' Imperials.

Without question, I highly recommend the place (I received business cards for both the Manager and the person who handles their orders), and plan on making it a part of every future trip I take to KC (the next time, I'll probably return home with next year's Samuel Adams' Utopias, which I've been after for years).

So I was in KCMO for the weekend and visited both the Midtown and the Gomer's Fine Wine and Spirits stores on the advice of a local.

The Gomer's Midtown isn't bad, though the store seemed kinda dumpy especially from the outside. It looked like the sort of place I would normally avoid because they only stock crappy beer. I was at least a little concerned that the recommendation was not good.

However, once inside the selection was much better than expected from the exterior. It was not as good as Gomer's Fine Wine and Spirits but had a similar selection. Generally they have the same breweries represented, but Midtown just had fewer varieties.

Service was basically nonexistant while browsing. When I made it to the counter I asked if they had any other Smokestacks from Boulevard. He mentioned they also had the Imperial Stout hidden in the back and brought me up a bottle so that was at least a plus.

Either way, if you are in the KC area you should visit at least one of the Gomer's. If you can only make one, the Fine Wine and Spirits would be my recommendation.

I was down in Midtown today and decided to see what they had in store for me. Mark, the manager of the place, has a really beer forward store. The place is located on 39th and Broadway in an area that you wouldn't necessarily expect to find some good beer. I walked in looking for a couple bottles that I had not seen in KC yet, and of course they had them on hand (ST Crème Brule and Quatre Centime). The vibe of this place is kind of odd. As you walk in to your right and towards the back in a shelf full of really good singles, 750's and bombers with a back cooler filled with really good beer. The middle is wine and liquor and the other wall is a cooler filled with BMC, major imports and Double Deuces of cheap malt liquor. The reason I call the store beer forward is because they always have the new releases. When only a handful of certain bottles come in, you can bet that they get at least a couple. The problem is that the area dictates that they carry a lot of crappy stuff. I wish they would have a better selection but I think that if they did they would probably loose their main clientele.

Stopped by this place a couple of times while I was in Kansas City visiting relatives. Store looks older and a little run down, but considering the relative location in Kansas City, it's to be expected. Service was outstanding. The manager walked around the store with me making suggestions and shooting the breeze when he saw that I knew good beer. He even gave me a card when I checked out. The selection was not too shabby either. The typical macros were present along the left wall, with the good stuff along the back wall. Good selection of Belgians and Germans. Micros included Boulevard, Schlafly, Arcadia, New Belgium, Goose Island, and Avery. Prices were pretty reasonable too. Overall, a good store, and I could definitely see myself back in here when I'm in KC again.

Not a bad store...I've stopped here a few times, though only when I'm in the area or searching for something specific and limited.
I really appreciated all the service I was given and offered here. A couple very helpful guys, who knew their beer.
Wish the store was bigger, but maybe I've just been to Lukas too many times. I must say I wouldn't think you could cram this many beers into this size of store. I generally stop in KC for St Bernardus and the stuff not available in Wichita - Bell's, Schlafly, Arcadia, etc. This place fulfills that wish, though again if I was making a special trip I'd just to to Lukas.
Prices seemed good, wish there were some more singles though I'm spoiled in that regard. Nice little place, and I appreciate the effort - if in the area, by all means stop by.

This isn't a big shop, so there is not as large of a selection as you will find in other stores. That being said they carry a nice offering of Micros, Belgians and other European brews. Some of the harder to find beers seem to last longer here than other stores. I have found some gems here, that were long gone other places.

Service is top notch. Mark often posts availability of items here at BA. Prices tend to be a little higher than some stores, but if you are in the Plaza/Midtown area, this is a solid choice.

Take with a grain of salt anybody would say this is in a "bad part of town". It's the heart of midtown, Kansas City! It's a great part of town, adjacent to Westport and the 39th Street Restaurant Row.

Anyway, Gomer's Midtown is the best. It is where I go 95% of the time. The staff are awesome, extremely helpful, and they have a huge selection of great beers all stuffed into a tiny little corner of the store. They almost always have what I'm looking for, and when they don't they are quick to offer discounts on what they do have in stock. Does it get any better!?

Their prices are the cheapest in town, too, as far as I can tell. 750ml bottles of Ommegang are at least $0.30 less than anywhere else in the city.

I shop exclusively at Gomer's Midtown. Mark, Tim, Jack, and all the others are always happy to please. They know their stuff, and can make recommendations to any kind of drinker. In addition, if there's something you're after, they'll do whatever they can to get it for you.

A short while ago, I needed a keg of Bell's Two Hearted Ale, and Tim was able to get a hold of one of the four that was coming into KC just for me. Right now, they've arranged for a keg of Schlafly's delicious APA to be shipped to the store from St. Louis, as it isn't usually even available in KC, and all for no additional charge! That's great service, to me.

One thing that amazes me about other liquor stores is how they somehow, with worlds more space than Gomer's, are unable to match its beer selection. In a twenty foot section of the back wall of the store, Gomer's features the highest density of beer diversity in town.

Conveniently located right next to major stops of two bus lines(the 51 and the 39), it's easy to get to and from. For the exhaust-types, they have a convenient parking lot, too.

Gomer's is the last word in liquor stores, in KC.

I like this place a lot for one main reason, the service. The guys who work there are very nice and friendly, which is saying a lot for the part of town they are in. I can see someone getting pretty jaded being in a not so great part of town. But no, they are very friendly and helpful. It creates a good atmosphere.

The size of the store is a bit of an issue. It is a tiny space, but they do make the best of the space they have.

One thing that I am starting notice in beer stores in KC, is that the selection of single bombers is thinning out. Gomer's does have a good selection of six packs. They have the full line of SN (including Bigfoot), New Belgium, Bell's, Anchor, Boulevard, O'Fallon. Their import selection doesn't seem to be where it used to be. They do seem to be going for quality rather than quantity though. Duvel, Omegang, a lot of lambics which is a little suprising.

Overall, this is a good place to go to in a pinch

Shopping here is good for your heath.

Well, maybe not, but you should still stop by and pick up beer from them. I've felt at home at Gomers from the first time I walked in. From the outside of the building, you'd be suspicious that much good could happen inside. I can assure you, it is worth walking in and checking out.

Service is great! They always seem to have a person working that can speak expertly about beer, wine, scotch, or what ever you're into. (I have often had to use them for wine advice) They'll work with you to get beers you might be interested in; and you can preorder cases of beer in advance if you like. All this and they serve you with a smile. I always feel good shopping and talking with the crew at Gomers.

The selection is pretty good, especially for a store of this size. They, of course, have plenty of domestic beer because it sells. They have about 6 coolers of beer that is very worth while, not to mention a wall of unchilled bottles (mostly 750ml) and then a specialty unchilled area that usually features a few rare or high ABV beers. They do have a surprising amount of imported belgian beer.

Price is pretty reasonable. Now and then they'll have a deal that just about kicks your [butt]- like $2.99 for Koenigshaven 750ml's. Otherwise, you pay about what you'd expect to pay.
