Puck The BeerPuck The Beer
Notes: First brewed to celebrate our 25th anniversary, the beer now known as PUCK, a petite saison of just over 4% ABV, won a place in our hearts and in our year-round portfolio of beers. Brewed with premium Pils and wheat malts and fermented with the same yeast strain used to make our renowned Saison, Le Merle, Puck is sharp and spritzy with a delicious flowery, spicy dry-hop aroma—the perfect accompaniment to any celebration, big or small.

My extremely good and awesome buddy Jon Passow, who as of a few months ago became the Manager of Barrel Room Operations at Anderson Valley Brewing Company, recently sent me this in a package from northern, CA. He tells me this particular beer from North Coast is not yet available in this area of the country. He would appear to be right, as I have never seen this beer here before. Poured out of a 12 oz. glass into my pint glass, this beer pours a very clear, light to medium golden color with lots of streams of little bubbles continuously rising to the beer's surface. has a white head that is about 2/3 of an inch thick when first poured before settling to 1/5 of an inch thick with pretty good lacing. Aromas of crisp malts, grassy, grainy, herbal spice notes, hints of green apple and pear, and lemon zest that is rounded out with a slight yeasty funk. The taste is pretty much the same, with a slight crisp malt presence followed by grassy, herbal, grainy spices such as clove, and citrusy lemon zest, and hints of green apple and pear, and a slight yeasty funk note that is all rounded out by a slight hop bitterness. Has a crisp, refreshing, smooth, light to medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. has a clean finish. A very enjoyable saison on this very warm spring night here in Cleveland.

12oz bottle, an apparent ode to the forest elf character in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

This beer pours a clear, bright medium golden yellow hue, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and fizzy off-white head, which leaves some layered table-top cloud lace around the glass as it slowly recedes.

It smells of bready, doughy pale malt, a touch of spicy wheat graininess, subtle white pepper, a bit of aged lemon citrus, soft earthy yeast, and wet hay hops. The taste is grainy, gritty pale and wheat malt, gentle lemon zest, ethereal yeast, wispy white and black pepper, a hard water minerality, and plain weedy, leafy, and straw-like hops.

The carbonation is quite active, but still understated in its lilting frothiness, the body medium-light in weight, and generally smooth, with a very small airy creaminess arising as things warm up a tad. It finishes just off-dry, the lingering malt getting weary, it seems, and the other players equally checked out, in dire need of a re-up.

A so-so, mostly easy-drinking Saison, some of the oomph taken out of the overall bearing, much in the vein of the now ubiquitous India Session Ales. Not much appears off, but there's nothing particularly interesting here, either, so I can't see the appeal of going back for more.

Pours very crystal clear yellow with light head, but the head does stick around. Smells a lot like white wine. The taste is great/complex. Initial creaminess of the wheat used and then finishes with a funky farmhouse tartness. Very crisp and refreshing light bodied beer. A lot better than I expected as I don't usually grab for saisons.

Served from tap in a tulip glass.
Beer is a nice straw color with a slight, white head and plenty of lacing.
The aroma is quite nice. Fruity and spicy with a bit of yeasty funk as well.
Very nice taste with lots of spice -- light an peppery and some nice fruitiness. It has a nice farmhouse funk and a little finishing tart note.
Mouthfeel is light and bubbly.
Overall, this is quite easy drinking with plenty of flavor. However, not sure it's worth the pric.

Weak, bland, meh. Pale straw color, pale straw taste, bud light of saisons.

Pours a vibrant yellow with massive head, took several minutes to pour entire beer into glass. Smell is very muted spice with slight lemon. Tastes like a saison mixed with tonic water, very effervescent but too much so.

This beer pours a bright gold with a fairly large head. The aroma is bright, with black pepper, clove, and loads of floral tones, green bean, and honey. The flavor is light and bright, with clove, black pepper, and a so many flowers, as well as a light salad like quality, like watercres. The mouthfeel is light bodied with lots of fizzy carbonation. Overall this is a tremendous little table beer, with a distinct moreish quality.

So when I walk into the local beer shop and I see something new I go and get it, I don't look at the label or read the bottle. I just grab it an go; well this didn't pan out very well this time. I was expecting something a little bit more flavorful. The beer is great if you know what your getting into so I have no one to blame but myself. It is very light with the notes you get from a saison barely noticeable. This would make a great session beer but when the bottle says petite saison they really mean it.

A - Frothy, creamy white head that lasts. Very small CO2 bubbles. Hazy, straw color.
S - Plenty of funky yeast notes. Some very light peach, maybe strawberry?
T - The grassy, tart/citrus saison qualities shine through, surprising for such low ABV. Ends hoppy and dry, I like it.
M - A little thin, but expected for 4%.
O - If this is Le Merle's mini-me or petite-me, then I am definitely looking forward to meeting the big brother.
