Every year we age a special batch of our much-loved Russian Imperial Stout in Bourbon barrels. The depth, intensity, and complexity of the flavor profile of this special release, like its predecessors, make it a worthy tribute to Old Rasputin.
Prior to 2010, Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin was released in such limited quantities that it was available only at the North Coast Brewing retail shop in Fort Bragg, California. However, we received so many requests for this beer that we began producing enough Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin to put into broader, but still limited, distribution.

Black as night with no light emerging through. There's a fingernail of beige that covers the rim and most of the top. The aroma is packed with sweet bourbon and loads of dark roasted barley. The taste is full of aggressive dark roasted barley, but the sweet bourbon is the dominant player. The mouth is very thick and chewy.

L: Poured from a 12oz bottle into a sniffer - Dark black pour with 2 fingers length of head risen. The foam quickly dissolves leaving lacing behind on the glass.
S: Getting notes of Barrel, chocolate, coffee, slight caramel, dark malts, slight vanilla.
T: Getting a taste of the barrel more than anything, followed by some chocolate, coffee, slight vanilla. Same as the smell goes.
F: Low to medium acidity, heavy bodied. Sipper, not as easy to drink as most barrel aged stouts.
O: This tastes a little more than a 11% for me. I've tried a lot of barrel aged stouts and this one definitely tastes the part if not more. I do appreciate old rasputin for their classic 9% stout but not sure about this one if I'm being honest. Would maybe recommend aging to bring out more of the characteristics of this one.

Dark brown, nearly black. Small khaki lacing. Coconut smell from the barrel aging, along with cherry, currant, and molasses sweetness. Medium heavy body with small sparkly carbonation. Sweet woody notes with coconut hints and chocolate covered currant. Some roasted notes creep in as an aftertaste.

Another one to pull out of the cellar
Pours a med frothy brown head with good retention, good lacing, decent legs, inky jet black color
Nose is pretty nice, dark chocolate, cocoa, some vanilla barrel and bourbon soaked wood, baking spices, lots of smooth oak and barrel characters, little fudgey, caramel, light roast, touch of sweet candy, very mild dark fruits
Taste is even better, loads of barrel characters, bourbon and sweet barrel juice, vanilla and a little buttery oak, toasted oak, baking spices, and even some coconut, dark chocolate and cocoa with the baking spices, caramel, a bit of roast and coffee notes but not much, smooth alcohol with a little heat, cocoa powder as it warms, with a mild bitterness, drier finish with more raw cocoa that hasn't been melted yet, with some creamy milk chocolate and bourbon vanilla lingering
Mouth is fuller bod, rich chewy and a little creamy, thick, light warming alcohol, med to a bit lighter foamy carb
Overall this was the best of the Old Rasputin Anniversaries yet, base beer is always awesome, but this time loads of barrel and bourbon, I really need to drink these on the fresher side before the barrel fades like the older ones I had.

2014 vintage; drank 10/10/15 @ Harvest Hop Haus.
Black/brown appearance.
Tan head; nice lace.
Cream, oak, chocolate & faint booze heat notes in the nose.
Medium thick, creamy mouthfeel.
Bourbon heat, oak & cream flavors up front; milk chocolate notes on the finish.
Boozy & not great, but drinkable.

The non-barrel aged version of this beer and that beer was pretty good. I have been sitting on this beer for two years. Pulled this out of the cellar and decided to try it today. The beer is 47 degrees and served in a tulip glass. A gentle pour of the beer produced a one finger medium tan head with fair retention. The head is airy and foamy and left no lacing on the glass. The color of the beer is SRM 37 a dark brown nearly black and opaque.
The aromas in the beer are whiskey, vanilla, alcohol, molasses, raisins, char, wood, dark chocolate, coffee, toffee, caramel, bready, dark roasted malts, stone fruit, and burnt sugar.
The flavors in the beer are whiskey, vanilla, lots of char, molasses, dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, toffee, caramel, dark roasted malts, and burnt sugar.
The mouthfeel of the beer is sharp and dry.
The body of the beer is full, medium carbonation, and a full finish.
I did not care for this beer. Too much char and the body of the beer is more akin to a porter not a stout. I am disappointed, was hoping for more.

Black like anthracite coal; extremely dense, spongy, sculpted light tan head. Dense and rich aroma of charred grains, chocolate, dried figs and dates, and a hint of bourbon. Cocoa and restrained booze within the taste; very malty; chocolate syrup. Heavy body; sweet with some alcohol dryness.
I'm not sure when this was produced, but it's been in my beer collection for a few years. Like many big, heavy, dark ales, it has aged well. Thee is some awesome depth and complexity to the flavors, and as it warms up over the next hour (oh, it's definitely a sipper), I expect more sensory delights to emerge. A fine beverage for a sub-freezing winter afternoon while the wood fire blazes along...
