Berliner Weisse: Passion Fruit - PeachBerliner Weisse: Passion Fruit - Peach
Notes: Influential beer author the late Michael Jackson describes “Berlin White Beer” as having an “insistent sparkle, a fragrant fruitiness in the nose, a sharp, dry palate, and a frisson of quenching, sour acidity in the finish.” North Coast Brewing’s Passion Fruit-Peach Berliner Weisse is made with the juice of peaches from California and passion fruit from Ecuador, a Pan-American take on the German classic.

North Coast's website nails the description of their Berliner Weiss Passionfruit Peach with, "...made with the juice of peaches from California and passion fruit from Ecuador, a Pan-American take on the German classic."

Sparkling gold and woven together by the scant lingering proteins of wheat to give the ale a hazy glow, a cottony, sparkling froth pulls from the ale and illuminates a radiant nose of passionfruit, peach, citrus and other vinous fruit along with the brisk earthen brine of the sea. An initial and short lived sweetness circulates around tangy hard candy, light taffy and sherbet.

But with the ale's sour underpinnings, its sweetness drifts quickly and the additions of peaches and passionfruit flood the tastebuds with succulent, juicy, tangy, exotic flavors. Underneath, the beer's soul of lime, lemon, kiwi, crabapple, sour grape and melon all add complexity to the fruit additions and the simple lactic sourness. Finishing pleasantly sour and with restrained astringency, the ale's taste of fruit peels and light woods decorates a quick and easy session.

Remarkably refreshing, crisp and clean, the fruit forward beer takes on a light and tangy profile even in finish. Highly drinkable and seductive in taste, the beer's light and creamy body trends rapidly dry, spicy and wafting about with faint bass wood and tropical fruit perfumes.

Clear beer bottles weird me out. 12oz bottle poured into a nonic.

A: Beautiful clear gold with a small amount of head that fades quickly.

S: Tart fruitiness and underlying sweetness; passion fruit is apparent and the peach is right there, along with impressions of tart citrus (lemon) and funk,

T: More of the same, refreshing and tart simultaneously, the fruit flavors are there and authentic and lend that stone fruit/summery quality that I like in a Berliner.

MF: Light, tart, effervescent, refreshing.

O: A Berliner that delivers on the fruit additives & their particular flavors.

L - clear amber/golden with no real head to speak of
S - Sweet passionfruit and peach on the nose
T - Follows the nose with tons of passionfruit and peach throughout - not too sour - more sweet and juicy.
F - Light to medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation - crisp and juicy
O - A very nice berliner weisse

Mildly hazy yellow colored beer with a good sized white colored head.

Smells strongly of pineapple juice. Mildly tart smelling. Strangely smells of tomato. Passion fruit scent but I can't detect any peach.

Starts out tart and fruity with passion fruit up front and center. Mild bitterness. Tastes like sour pineapple juice. Peach is faint but detectable.

Mouthfeel is light.

Pretty much a hot weather beer.

12 ounce bottle - $3.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a hazy, light gold body with a thin, white head that vanishes almost instantly.

Smell: At times you detect the peach, at other times the p-fruit, but often they combine and morph into a quasi pineapple juice nose. This is the bulk of the aroma, though elusive hints of crackery malts and perceived lemon are found.

Taste: Heavy on the peach and passion fruit flavor, masking the beer underneath, though it's a beer that can be prone to that, leaving me feeling like I'm being subjected to a juice cleanse. Sweet, tart and brightly acidic, lending a juicy feel to it. Finishes as it starts, sweet and tart. It's a bit like, well, a SweeTart.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Well carbonated.

Overall: Ehhh. Let me just solidly state that I much preferred their cherry Berliner.

A bright gold color with just the hint of haze. Small, quickly disappearing, white head.
Sweet fruit aroma. Some grain.
Mostly peach taste. Some passion fruit. Tart at the onset, with more of a sweet aftertaste.
Crisp and refreshing.

Pours a hazy gold color. 1/5 inch head of a white color. Slight retention and slight lacing. Smells of strong passionfruit and a hint of peach. Fits the style of a Berliner Weissbier. Mouthfeel is smooth and clean, with a low carbonation level. There is a hint of dryness. Tastes of strong passionfruit, hint of pale malt, hint of bacterial funk, and a hint of peach. Overall, weak appearance and simplistic aroma, but good feel and blend, even though body is also simplistic.

Appearance- Poured into an 11oz snifter, mostly a thick foam (4 fingers deep) that I had to wait to calm down before slowly adding more liquid to the pour, resulting in more hefty head foam. In all, took 4 slow pours to get a decent 10oz into the glass. The brew itself is hazy and golden orange in color. By the time it finally dies down it leaves a thin, broken layer of suds with a thick ring around the edge and thick patches of lace found around the glass.

Smell - Tart, fruity aroma with a good amount of tropical passionfruit and sweet, fresh peach.

Taste - Follows the nose. Primarily tart, with lesser fruity sweetness. Light tropical character from the passionfruit upfront while the peach flavor notes come through more toward the back-end; peach that tastes so authentic you'd swear you could taste the skin on it, all the way down to a hint of nutty bitterness from the pit. Yeah, this is tasty.

Mouthfeel - Light-bodied with lively, bitey carbonation. Slick drinker with a dry, easy finish.

Overall - Despite the problems getting this thing to pour without creating a monstrous head, I think it's easily the best of the Berliner Weisses they've released to date. The fruit notes have such a fresh and authentic taste you'd swear you were actually eating it.

Bomber into a tulip appears a hazy golden yellow with white cap that fades leaving spotty lace.

Aroma is laden with peach/nectarine pulp upfront, touch of grass, yogurt and lemony lacto.

Taste is tart but backed with quite a bit of sweetness. There is a sulfur quality to the finish that blends with cereal grain and grass.

Light in body with modest carbonation. This is a downight poundable summer brew.

Picked up a single for $3.75 into a pint glass
A - Another unlucky one here with a super foamy brew a medium pour gave me almost a full glass of foam! Color itself is a very hazy bright yellow.
S - Smells of peach some sour lemon and faint wheat.
T - Wonderful peach and lemon sourness with a mild fruity finish! Quite possibly the best fruit based beer I have had in a while.
M - Very carbonated my only complaint. Even settled down in the glass its quite fizzy to drink. Reminds me a bit of a soda makes me burp!

Overall a very great Berliner that I would love to have again just to get a less carbonated bottle!
