Notes: MEXICAN-STYLE DARK LAGER

California Gray Whales (Eschrichtius robustus) endure the longest migration of any mammal on earth, 10,000–12,000 miles round trip, between their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic and their winter calving lagoons in Baja California. Twice each year, these gentle giants swim past our doorstep here on the Mendocino Coast, affording us a priceless up-close look at spouts and flukes just beyond the surf, connecting us in an essential way to them and their epic voyage. Laguna Baja refers collectively to the termini of the whales’ southern migration—the placid waters of Baja’s San Ignacio Lagoon, Ojo De Liebre Lagoon, and Magdalena Bay.

Laguna Baja is a classically styled Vienna lager (in the Mexican mode), rich dark amber, with a malty aroma and a full, creamy body.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Pilsener glass. Bottled on September 26th 2017.

L: Clear dark brown. Two finger beige head has great retention.

S: Smells of grainy sweet malts, with some faint molasses and toffee.

T: Very toffee like flavor, with sweet grainy notes that linger on.

F: Medium body, nice and crisp, lingering grain flavor.

O: Great beer, simple, tasty and easy to drink.

Got a six pack of this that turned out to be two and a half years old but, it still tastes pretty darn good.
I am a huge fan of the Vienna lager Style. This is similar to Eliot Ness and Erie railbender ale...
REFRESHING.

12 oz bottle from Brewers Haven. Medium brown body, clear, foamy head dissipates to a tight ring. Aroma is toasted malts, brown sugar. Taste brings mild sweetness, which falls kind of flat leaving a dull bitterness on the palate. I expected more flavor from these guys.

Rich dark reddish-amber color, proper head, malty aroma, medium body, sliiiight bitter finish, but an easy, pleasant drink. Compared to similar beers I've had enough times, this one may be a new fave. Wish I would've bought more.

8th Review. is it North Coast brand or is this really better than a DosX /Modelo dark lager. Yes.
a. Creamy top over a brown body that laces well, 4 for looks
s 3.5 Not much offered other than malt and molasses.
t 3.75 Sweet, creamy, the malt and molasses now better rounded out with caramel and just a bit of hops.
f 4 creamy wins the day, will cut through spicy and beany foods better than the thinner mexican dark lagers.
o 4.25 for best of its kind?

a tasty darker lager here, a package i have not seen from north coast before, and not a style of beer i generally am too attracted to, but this is exceptionally well executed and was a nice compliment with our artisan pizza last night, an easy drinking bottle of beer and well above average in terms of quality, which is par for the course for north coast. a light and still transparent brown tone to this, a short but stocky tan head on top, and lots of bubbles continuing to rise up. it smells and tastes slightly deeper on the malt side than a lot of vienna types, and there is immediately less sweetness to it than i have come to expect in the style, which i really appreciate in a food context. some nice nuttiness to this, almost an english brown ale malt profile to me for a second, dry cocoa and some toasted warmth, none of the sugary malt that normally comes along in these, but also not exactly crisp, and maybe a little difficult to appreciate as a lager with the yeast being as mild in flavor as it is. quite a simple beer really, but enough of a deviation from the style norms to stand out as relatively unique, which is hard to do, especially in a beer like this. drinkable as they come, full of flavor, and very well refined. glad to have this one around here, definitely fills a niche.

5.0% abv, 19 ibu. No other specs per the website. Pours out to a brilliantly clear dark amber with Ruby highlights, forming a modest light tan head with good retention and average lacing. The nose is of Caramel and grain husk. Minimal hops in the nose. No off aromas, clean ferment. The mouth feel is smooth, medium bodied, very little astringency. The taste is light caramel with suggestions of light molasses, low herbal bitterness. Earthy finish. Overall, lightly sweet.

A nice easy drinking Vienna lager. Worth a try. Eliot ness is my favorite but this is comparable.

12oz bottle, PKGD 09262017. Mahogany colored body with a creamy beige head that slowly fades. Malty nose with brown sugar, toasty grain, caramel, and toffee with earthy hops and lager yeast. Malty & sweet flavors with loads of toasty grain, caramel, toffee, and brown sugar notes; modest leafy & earthy hop bitterness. Medium body, lower carbonayion, clean finish. The simplicity of this beer does not take away from its overall experience - it is really good, but I can't see myself buying it again in the future. Why? I have no clue. It's refreshing, well balanced, and easy to drink. Totally worth a try if you see it.

Poured into a Victoria tumbler glass.

The beer is a dark, deep amber with a tan head that leaves a film and light lacing upon receding. The aroma is lightly toasted malts, buttered bread, and subtle caramel. The taste is lightly toasted grains, a touch of caramel, and a perfectly dry finish. The mouthfeel is medium to light.

Overall, this is excellent. It may be the only craft beer that actually represents the Mexican lager properly as it’s not over-hopped like all others who’ve attempted.
