On tap at World of Beer North Hills on 12/29/11. Served in a small snifter.

Pours a pitch black with thick, creamy, cascading mountain of cappuccino colored head that has great retention. The nose offers rich chocolate aromas, some roasted malts and coffee, and even some faint anise. The flavor is similar with rich chocolate and coffee with faint anise, but there are also heavy alcohol esters and a very faint astringency in the finish. The alcohol is intense, but doesn't take away from the flavor. It's a very rich, smooth, warm, full bodied beer.

This is a great RIS. I've had it several times before, but this is the first time I had it on tap. I'll go back to this stout again and again.

12oz bottle poured into St. Bernardus chalice. Served @ ~55F.

A- Nice pitch black with a khaki head. Fades to a thin layer.

S- Dark roasty malts and nice hop aroma that really shines through despite the dark coffee/cocoa notes.

T- Very nice roasty flavor without the sweetness of many of the other RIS' that I've tried. I love black coffee and this has some very same characteristics that make me love it so much. This is a real no bullshit brew!

M- The hop aromas stick around real nice and the carb is perfect.

D- Very nice RIS that is nice and balanced. Not very sweet and I enjoy it a lot.

One is great, two and the world is happy, three...that's what my friend calls "a fist in the eye". Full flavored, dark and pure. Tasty alone or with a meal. Hamburgers are especially good with this beer. Truly a great beer, even if you only want one.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance-Jet black and totally opaque with a dense, fluffy tan head.

Aroma-Roasted aromas of coffee and bittersweet chocolate blend with pleasant earthy hop undertones.

Flavor-Bittersweet chocolate is quickly overtaken by rich, roasted coffee flavors. Coffee grounds and burnt espresso lingers on well into the finish.

Mouthfeel-Thick, full body is nearly chewy, though the moderate carbonation keeps this beer from seeming heavy.

I think this might have been the first RIS I ever had, and I've drank a lot of it since then. This is a lovely example of the style, and a fantastic beer.
