On a cold winter's night I dreamed of a coastal cottage, Northern Europe...I can hear the storm surge a few meters away....fire slowly dwindling....I swirl the stout in my glass...savoring every last drop...

THIS is THAT stout.

Near-perfection. It doesn't suffer from "too much chocolate," "too much coffee," there's not too much of anything. Just the perfect amount of stoutness.

Now I know better, but a few decades ago I would have imagined that this would be what Guinness tasted like....

The nitro tap pour results in an absolutely perfect appearance: pure black, 1/2 inch of caffe latte head. The nose is warm Manhattan Special soda, for the Brooklyn/NYC folks...

Unbelievably smooth. Don't ever pass this up on tap!

No date that I can find. Approximately 3 years old most likely.

A: Pours black with a big thick medium brown head. Head fades very slowly with top notch retention. Substantial and heavy lacing.

S: Definitely has been aging a while. Very mellow aroma. Some chocolate, some char, hint of coffee. Decent dark fruits holding out though, especially when swirled. Just a hint of anise too.

T: A bit more chocolate than the aroma betrays. Mild chocolate with decent coffee, melding with dark fruits up front. Bit bitter towards the finish with the chocolate growing bittersweet and hints of char poking through.

M: Somewhat heavy and smooth. Touch chalky in the finish.

O: One of the best RISes out there and perhaps the best value of them all. Wonderfully complex flavors without any fluff. No barrel aging, no adjuncts. Just various roasted malt characteristics all flung together in a surprisingly balanced manner. Aging has mellowed this, zero alcohol is present and the flavors are all well integrated and smooth.

Poured from bottle to an imperial pint.

A: Rich espresso with a cocoa colored head. The head is thick and foamy. Slight particulate and carbonation visible.

S: Plum, grape, toffee, black pepper, tobacco, espresso.

T: Tobacco, peat, earthy hops, toffee, roasted espresso, lots of alcohol.

M: Medium bodied with a dry finish and lots of warmth from the alcohol.

O: Wonderful appearance and inviting aroma. Taste is just a little harsh on the palate at first but smooths as the beer warms. The alcohol isn't masked much. Still, a nice palette of flavors makes for a complex beer. Great RIS for the price point.
