Pours a deep blackish brown with a creamy head. Loads of lacing in the glass. Big aroma of coffee and chocolate. The taste is spot-on the same, with some dark fruit joining in. Nice bit of bitterness on the finish. Nice thick, oily mouth. This is everything a stout should be, and one of my favorites.

12oz, 2010 vintage (can't believe I have never formally reviewed this one)
Riedel tulip

A: Pours a deep dark black color. Coming out of the bottle some reddish hues. Half finger of medium tan head. Immediately leaving some lacing sheeting.

S: Dark fruit. Prunes, plums, figs. Some alcohol still. Roasted malts. Dark chocolate. Not a lot of coffee.

T: Up front, dark chocolate bitterness. Very pleasant. Surprisingly not getting as much dark fruit in the flavor. More roasted malts. That nice mixture of dark chocolate bitterness and light sweetness. Lingering flavor. Finish is fairly long. Still tasting the cocoa.

M: Full bodied, but easy drinking for ris.

look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

A: Near-black brown, absorbs all light. Respectable moderate cafe-colored head that recedes but leaves some appetizing residue. Looks thick.

S: Dark but not burnt malt, cocoa. Those are the only components I detect, but wow, do they fill the nose!

T: Mmmm... chocolate and dark malt, some sweet dark molasses yet carries a decidedly bitter finish, long and pleasing. Smoky toffee. So dark. Delicious. Alcohol is hidden very well, and I'm pleased not to get any sweetness from things like prunes, which I usually don't enjoy.

M: Creamy, smooth. The bit of carbonation disrupts its smoothness somewhat, but not enough to make it disappointing.

O: This is considered a standard for Imperial Stouts for a reason. Very dark and straightforward, thick palate in both taste and mouthfeel yet easy to drink. You can smell an opened bottle from across the room. Can't go wrong with a pack of this.
