It looks like a soda when pouring. It's a very dark, and thick looking beer. The head last long, and it's very effective.
This Imperial Stout lived up to the hype for me. It wasn't playing on to many notes. It hit the right amount of smoke, and chocolate notes. I taste some Almond as well.

North Coast doesn't disappoint much, if at all. When it comes to stouts. This one is in my top 5.

Appearance: Dark brown to the point of being just a notch below black. A prodigious, creamy, light brown head swirls its way to the top when poured, and lasts until the bitter end. Lacing all down the glass.

Smell: Roasted chocolate malt and sweet bananas are nicely framed by some spicy, floral hops that balance the otherwise syrupy scent with a fresh crispness.

Taste: The taste is true to the smell. Roasted mocha, banana bread, and dates, with a slightly burnt bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Chewy, medium bodied, with medium carbonation, and some comforting alcohol warming.

Overall: An excellent example of an Imperial Stout, successful in exhibiting both sweetness and bitterness, while managing to keep things nicely balanced. Definitely not for session drinking, but a solid choice for sipping.

Dark and chocolatey appearance. Amber foam.

Smells of coffee and dark chocolate. While the flavor follows the nose, it's much more bitter and hoppy than a typical stout in the same class. The finish is dry too. A clean presentation for a serious brew.

Overall, it's one of the best dark beers I've enjoyed on the west coast. A welcome change to a steady stream of IPAs and over-the-top flavored stouts.

Poured form the 12oz bottle into a large snifter.

A: Black with only the faintest light coming in at the very edges when held to light. Head was 2 fingers thick, creamy, and dark tan to brown color and lasted a while. Vicious looking beer.

S: You can smell this one from a foot or more away. Super roasty with hints of cafe au leait and some mocha and chocolate. Sweet dark fruit note in there buried deep and a touch of alcohol and then covered by caramelized and burnt sugar. Very nice, if intense smelling beer.

T: Almost overwhelmingly packed with flavor. Roasty, almost smoky character right up front, with hints of bittersweet and baker's chocolate all throughout. A bit of coffee shins through with mocha notes and espresso highlights. Finishes bitter with a warming feeling, alcohol and then immediately covered up in the roast again. Dangerous brew.

Overall: an absolute classic. What an imperial stout should be. Very bitter but also having some balanced characteristics of sweetness. Always a good go to.
