Old Rasputin used to be my favorite beer. One day, I bought a four-pack of OR and a 24 oz. bottle of Guinness Extra Stout, then settled in for the night with what I felt was an adequate amount of good beer. Looking back, I was quite surprised with the similarities between the two beers. In retrospect, Old Rasputin is basically Guinness without the acidic, bitter aftertaste. I know that some people drink Guinness specifically for that vinegary taste, which comes from the brewery reusing samples of their products from previous centuries, so it would be completely understandable if some people prefer Guinness to North Coast Old Rasputin. In my opinion, OR's smoothness and unadulterated chocolate after-taste is highly desirable, and outdoes Guinness by a long-shot. Still, it helped me to realize that there are better options out there. I would recommend Samuel Smith's Oatmeal stout for anyone looking for the next level of delicious stout. For anyone that loves Old Rasputin's taste specifically because of its ability to be delicious while hiding a high alcohol content, I would suggest Weyerbacher's "old Heretic" or "Heresy" stouts, because even though they do not match the sheer tastiness of Old Rasputin, they definitely hide their ABV better than any other beer I have come across, and are in some ways reminiscent of OR's flavor profile.

Old Rasputin, herself, though . . . I highly recommend her. Pick this up whenever you get the chance.

Poured from the bottle into an American pint.

A: This brew pours an immense head that is a sandy tan and lasts FOREVER!!! Maps well down the side of the glass. The dark black beer is almost impenetrable by light. Exactly what an imperial Russian stout should look like, and lives up to it's dark and mysterious namesake.

S: Dark and malty, it has a slightly bitter smell to it. Good smell.

T: Boozy. The dark malts are strong and up front with the good solid bitterness. The 9% ABV is tough in a good way.

M: Great and oily like the appearance clues to. The carbonation adds to a spicy and burning feel.

O: A really good brew. The look and smell are great, with a solid taste that is perfect for a cold, harsh winter.
