Pours dark brown, with a generous two fingers of khaki head. Strong retention with some patchy lacing.

Nose is spicy rye, oak wood, cinnamon, roasty malt. Wood shines through the strongest. The rye isn't as present as I thought it would be.

Taste is similar. A lot of wood and oak presence, barrel char, vanilla, some dark chocolate presence, rye. Booze is definitely here. Quite a bit of evaporation on the tongue. Has some bite. This one leans towards the bitter and dry side. Spicy, peppery.

Mouthfeel is just a hair short of fullbodied. Feeling a little light, a touch thin. Mild carbonation.

Overall this is a solid barrel aged Russian Imperial. Bourbon Old Rasputin is a knockout based on the year and I've had a few fantastic rye-aged stouts, but this falls a little short. For 20 dollars a bottle it should bring just a little more to the table.

500 ml bottle into pint glass. Pours a dark brown (not motor-oil black, like you'd expect) with a massive, chunky, long-lasting light tan head. Initial impression is chocolate, charred oak, a touch of coffee - all complemented by a pervasive but subtle rye whiskey presence. Very complex, but everything fits together nicely. I thought the mouthfeel was a little thin for a RIS, but maybe that's just me. Finish is cocoa, coffee, and a bit more rye. Very enjoyable.

Served in a teku glass from the bottle.

Appearance: Semi thick body coming off a coffee-isk body with a soft bubble body with a tan head which initially rose just about half one finger's length off the body.

Smell: Whiskey aroma, pretty deep but leaves the nostrils pretty quickly.

Taste: Heavy whiskey flavor coming off a touch sweet like butterscotch candy. Brown sugar and hints of mellow whiskey noted. Strong and subtle all at once.

Mouth: Medium body with a soft carbonation and Ridiculously sticky body.

Overall: Good brew which I thought was expensive considering what you were getting for the money. I paid in NJ just about 20 a bottle. Salud.

A: Jet black, huge dense, creamy tan colored head. Exceptional retention and wonderful lacing. Perfect appearing beer. 5

S: Big roasty notes, bakers chocolate, herbaceous characters, big leather and tobacco notes. Barrel notes are present with oaky whiskey characters, but are not particularly prominent. 4.25

T: Taste follows but with bigger whiskey notes. Huge char and roasted malt up front with big rye whiskey notes on the finish that linger for ages. Other characters I get on unsweetened bakers chocolate and leather. Really excellent. 4.5

M/D: Mouthfeel could be thicker and fuller, but it’s pretty drinkable and ABV is well controlled. 4

O: Excellent beer, not that I’m surprised Old Raspy and it’s variants are always great. 4.25

Brownish black body with a huge brown head that settles down very slowly. Rye, char, cocoa, oak, dried dark fruits, and roasted nuts aromas, bonds around the whiskey. Taste is not dynamic as some other variants have been in years past: rye, whiskey, wood, leather, char, and some dark cocoa and dried dark fruit, and that's about it. Some booze warmth gives it character. Sweeter than in other years too. Feel is warm, lighter for style, but chewy and has good rye textures. Still good and worth trying

Excellent head production, retention, and lacing. Foam is a dark tan, and body is almost jet black.

Nose is clean and fairly straightforward for an Old Raspy BA brew: nutty, roasty, strong, and bitter, with tones of espresso, burnt coffee, bitter cacao nib, prune, raisin, toast, caramel, oak, licorice, molasses, and whiskey.

Hot on the palate, with enough boozy sting that it prevents savoring as much as you might like with a beer this big and deep. Bitter and not overly sweet, with an emphasis on bitter, roasty, big RIS tones, all complemented by oak and spicy rye. Flavor tones include bitter chocolate, coffee, red grape, bark, leather, oak, vanilla, coconut, pepper - in no particular order.

As expected, this beer delivers on the premise, and is a worthy continuance of the series. If you prefer your BA imperial stouts sweeter and maltier, this isn't for you; this is very much an Old Rasputin brew, bitter, roasty, and RIS through and through.
