The Dunkeles was also really good. Usually, I like a brewery's Dunkeles much better than their Pils, but here we had the opposite. Despite being a wonderful beer, it didn't reach the transcendent heights of their Pils. It had sweet, Pils aroma to spare, and the flavor was also imbued with a hint of roasted malts. There was enough bitterness of front, too, to excite and tantalize. Again, Süffig. Excellent beer, but not wow: 4+.

.5 liter bottle purchased in Kazan. This is a (Munich) Dunkles.

A: Pours a clear nut-brown color with a fluffy head that fades to a solid layer, leaving nice lacing.

S: Sweet malt with rich caramel and chocolate overtones with nary a whiff of hops.

T: This starts sweet, and the center is also quite sweet, but the roast in the malt kicks in just past the center, and along with the minimal hop presence, nicely balances the beer. The finish is sweet and smooth.

M: Like an adult chocolate milk.

D: Wonderful. The only thing that would keep me from having too many of these is the overall sweetness.

I found this in a Moscow supermarket, in a standard Czech brown half liter bottle with a black and gold label featuring a castle's turret in the center. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 7/12/06, I opened it on 2/22/06.

Pours a translucent dark brown under a thick 1.5 finger beige head that lingers nicely and generates some nice lace. Very nice sweet caramel malt nose with a hint of roasted nuts. The mouth is well carbonated and slightly on the heavy side, with a bit of stickiness. The flavors are right, with caramel leading the way, supported by a touch of chocolate and a hint of lemon. The lemon sourness seems to merge seemlessly into a slight hoppy bitterness, which strengthens continuously through the finish and well into the aftertaste. Never truly bitter, though, the aftertaste culminates in a sense of dryness inviting another sip. Good stuff.
