Poured into a Dogfish Head pint glass. Pours a hazy caramel amber with a half finger white head that dissipates to a thick cap. Aroma of orange citrus, ginger, wheat, hint of clove. Flavor is sweet bready wheat, orange juice, ginger, honey, faintly floral. Medium bodied. A idiosyncratic take on a hefeweizen, much sweeter and with odd flavors like the ginger, but still clearly a wheat ale, and labelled as brewed with honey and ginger, so no surprises there. Not traditional nor following the hefeweisen profile, but an interesting American wheat ale, a bit on the sweet side. I'd get this again. I can see that it might be divisive; don't get this if you don't like moderate sweetness in a beer.

I am trying this beer off the tapper at a Thai Restaurant in downtown Boise, Idaho. It poured a hazy orangish with white head which left a spotty lace. The scent carried ginger notes. The beer was nicely balanced and easy to drink. There was ginger and honey presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a good beer.

better than its ratings, and its cool they can this one, especially this time of year, a decent hefeweizen type with ginger and honey in it. i was skeptical after having the ginger hefe type from mccall here in idaho, which wasnt real good at all, but this one is solid, surprised its so poorly scored here on BA. it has a few things working in its favor. the first is that the ginger is pretty mild, certainly compared to the one from mccall, but its natural enough, and really is only there in the nose and the finish. secondly, the beer is dry, this doesnt end up all sweet and candied, and the honey doesnt linger. its well carbonated too, so with the dryness, its very refreshing when its cold. the honey flavor is there, and there is an earthy raw wheatiness that marries up well with it. maybe i could do without the ginger in the mix, but it doesnt prevent me from enjoying the beer, not in the least. i like the rawness it has, all the bubbles, and the balance of the flavors. not my favorite beer from iron horse so far, but i could dig a few of these on a hot summer day.
edit: this was significantly better to me the second time around, much colder, the flavors seem to blend in a little better, although it still really doesnt taste all that much like a traditional hefe. definitely a hot weather refresher. the new can art looks sharp too.

"An unfiltered malt beverage brewed and flavored with honey and ginger." A low-key brew, with subtle flavoring. I thought initially that its low-key nature would make it forgettable. Realistically, it probably is forgettable, but that doesn't make it bad by any means. As I drink up the 1 pint 6 ounce bottle, I find myself drawn to take another mouthful, and another. Pleasant. If you have a chance to get one, you could do worse. Finish is a little bitter, but not too bad. 2015/06/13

This was poured into weizen glass.
The appearance was a muddled orange to yellow color with a finger's worth of white foamy head. Dissolved fairly quick to leave some sliding stringy lace.
The aroma had some sweet wheat, bubblegum, mellow clove, grassy hops and a touch of a lemon/banana blend.
The flavor started with the sweet wheat and bubblegum. Then the grassy hops seemed to infuse themselves into some clove. Subtle aftertaste of sweet wheat and bubblegum.
The mouthfeel was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt appropriate. ABV felt as promised by the brewer. Decent finish of sweet wheat and bubblegum.
Overall, this is one of those American wheat ales that didn't make the cut to be a true hefeweizen. Though, there's not really any "off" flavors, I'd say this is a decent beer.

One of my favorite beers. I've had it draught, canned, and bottled and it's always great.

22oz bottle served in a UFO weizen glass. Beer pours hazy golden amber and forms moderate white head. Aroma is grassy, wheaty, with just a trace of honey sweetness. Flavor is clean and distinctly less wheaty than I'd hoped. German weissbier yeast flavors yield bubblegum and clove. Not a fan of bubblegum in my beer, but at least it's not banana. *Very* thin mouthfeel, watery even, as if all the wheat fermented out leaving 6% pale ale with none of the accompanying Hefe goodness. There's a very subtle sharp flavor in the finish, but I don't think I'd call it ginger (and I love ginger). Very average. Moderately drinkable, but not flavorful enough and a poor example of the style. I appreciate a WA state brewery taking a stab at a brew not overloaded with hops, but I'm going to stick with El Jefe.
