Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours clear orange-amber color with a one finger of billowy, just off white foam. The head of the brew is rather fast fading, giving way to almost no lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite sweet overall with a good level of honey and some citrus smells of caramel and a bit of apple and banana. Along with these aromas comes a decent showing of a yeasty smell as well as a bit of a spicy aroma of coriander and clove as well as a little bit of grass and hay, with these rounding out the aroma to produce a rather nice smell overall.

Taste – The taste begins just as the nose would have let on, with lots of sweeter flavors of a fruity nature of orange, banana, and apple with some lighter yeasty tastes and a lighter bit of clove and coriander spice. As the taste moves on the spice grows stronger while the fruity flavors of apple and orange fade. The banana however remains relatively strong and is joined by more and more yeasty and spicy flavors as the taste advances. While the sweeter fruit flavors fade, some sweeter honey flavors all the while take their place, with these and a bit of a grassy taste, leaving one with a still fairly sweetened and nice yeasty flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thinner side with a carbonation level that is rather high. These are perfect for the style, as they really make for a nice base for the mix of sweet, yeast, grass, and spice.

Overall – I actually rather liked this brew. I think this is highly underrated when considering style, flavor profile and drinkability. I think this was a rather well done Hefe.

22oz bottle served in a UFO weizen glass. Beer pours hazy golden amber and forms moderate white head. Aroma is grassy, wheaty, with just a trace of honey sweetness. Flavor is clean and distinctly less wheaty than I'd hoped. German weissbier yeast flavors yield bubblegum and clove. Not a fan of bubblegum in my beer, but at least it's not banana. *Very* thin mouthfeel, watery even, as if all the wheat fermented out leaving 6% pale ale with none of the accompanying Hefe goodness. There's a very subtle sharp flavor in the finish, but I don't think I'd call it ginger (and I love ginger). Very average. Moderately drinkable, but not flavorful enough and a poor example of the style. I appreciate a WA state brewery taking a stab at a brew not overloaded with hops, but I'm going to stick with El Jefe.

Poured from the 22oz glass into a Stella stem glass. Body is a bright golden-orange with nice, zesty carbonation and almost no haze. A small flourish of bright white head appears briefly before receding to a thin ring. Aroma of sweet ginger and orange peel, along with some bubble gum from the yeast.
Palate is a mix of fruity hops and spicy ginger up front. A mildly sweet malt profile holds notes of orange peel and bubble gum. The ginger lingers on the finish, but doesn't impart a huge amount of heat or spice. Body is lively and just a little creamy, which isn't a big plus for a wheat ale. Still, this goes down easily enough, and the fruit and ginger provide more flavor than distraction.

This was poured into weizen glass.
The appearance was a muddled orange to yellow color with a finger's worth of white foamy head. Dissolved fairly quick to leave some sliding stringy lace.
The aroma had some sweet wheat, bubblegum, mellow clove, grassy hops and a touch of a lemon/banana blend.
The flavor started with the sweet wheat and bubblegum. Then the grassy hops seemed to infuse themselves into some clove. Subtle aftertaste of sweet wheat and bubblegum.
The mouthfeel was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt appropriate. ABV felt as promised by the brewer. Decent finish of sweet wheat and bubblegum.
Overall, this is one of those American wheat ales that didn't make the cut to be a true hefeweizen. Though, there's not really any "off" flavors, I'd say this is a decent beer.

From a can, into a pint glass: great aroma of citrus rind, ginger, and that great hefeweizen smell. Honey color, only slightly hazy. The honey and ginger come out but are not overpowering. Also banana. mostly dry feel, tart aftertaste. Generally not a fan of adjuncts in beers, especially a hefeweizen where the fruity esters are half the point, but I have to admit that it is well done in this case. I hope they continue to offer this into the summer. It is good enough that I couldn't help buying it even in the winter.

From a 12 ounce can with no date apparent. Pours cloudy gold with a huge foamy white head that leaves in about five minutes. Spots of lace. Not much aroma. Taste is orange, wheat, and some light heat from the ginger. Medium body with ample carbonation. Could not find any hops to speak of and was not expecting much in this type of beer. An interesting spin on a wheat beer. Not a big fan of flavored beer in general but I did enjoy this one. Good summer refresher.

Poured into a Dogfish Head pint glass. Pours a hazy caramel amber with a half finger white head that dissipates to a thick cap. Aroma of orange citrus, ginger, wheat, hint of clove. Flavor is sweet bready wheat, orange juice, ginger, honey, faintly floral. Medium bodied. A idiosyncratic take on a hefeweizen, much sweeter and with odd flavors like the ginger, but still clearly a wheat ale, and labelled as brewed with honey and ginger, so no surprises there. Not traditional nor following the hefeweisen profile, but an interesting American wheat ale, a bit on the sweet side. I'd get this again. I can see that it might be divisive; don't get this if you don't like moderate sweetness in a beer.

Cloudy orange colored ale with a small white colored head.

Smells mildly of orange blossom honey. Faint ginger scent.

Starts out tasting of soda crackers. Mild bitterness and the cracker taste gets stronger. Orange is vague at best.

Mouthfeel is OK.

At best just an average wheat beer.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a straight-side pilsner glass.

A - Poured a golden light orange color, with inconsistent swirls of cloudiness within. Head was less than a finger of small bubbles that lasted awhile. A little bit of fluid lacing.

S - A moderate sweet floral and honey scent accentuated by a note of oranges, with a subdued whiff of wheat. Not a powerful scent, surprisingly subdued actually.

T - The sweet floral honey flavor is dominant, complimented by a tiny bit of citrus. The ginger is hard to notice (that might just be me), and there's a subtle wheaty finish.

M - Lighter-side-of-medium body, soft carbonation, a bit of stickiness.

D - A very nice mild, sweet beer if you're into that kind of thing. Good summer evening patio beer. Personally, I tend to like something with a sharper flavor punch, so it's not my favorite, but its still decent...and better than the C average it's earning. Not a hefeweizen, though, important to note.

I think this beer gets a bad rap. Sure the label says "High Five Hefe", but "hefe" simply means "yeast". Perhaps one shouldn't judge this against hefeweizens.
